Narrators Needed for Children's Show on Radio Fairfax

Project Overview

Requirements:

You must have a reasonably good microphone, a pop filter, and a suitable place to record. You can find tutorials online on how to use household materials to make a pop filter and a sound-proof room/or box (I use my closet - clothes make for inexpensive insulation). Age is not an issue, but please be responsible.

Brief Intro:

My name is Crystal Genduso and I am the producer of a children's public access program, called Bedtime Story, which was approved to air on RadioFairfax. This is the second time I have created this casting call. We are back because not as many women as we would have liked to have heard from actually auditioned. Sooo, this time, we are offering a jewelry sur-prize (provided by Charmed by Crystal) just for the females in addition to the $5 we are again rewarding to all winners - last time there were at least 20 out of  66 total auditions. Agreeing to volunteer your voice is not required to win; however, that is the hope considering our worthy cause, for which we receive no funding what-so-ever. Thankfully, it provides plenty of practice, tho. And full creative freedom.

About the Show:

Bedtime Story Broadcast was originally conceived of to provide children, particularly ones who are blind, dyslexic, or whose parents are likewise disabled or illiterate, w/a bedtime story, but we believe everyone of all ages will enjoy the show. It features unadulterated fairy/folktales that bear little resemblance to the sanitized Disney versions of today. A narrator reads them aloud to listeners, like an audiobook.

About the Project:

This show is a co-operative effort; each aspect is crowd sourced. The level of involvement is up to the individual. We offer opportunities for: actors, animators, composers, graphic artists, illustrators, musicians, singers, and writers to obtain exposure, in exchange for contributing content. Everything else is in exchange for experience. Note that volunteers need not live anywhere near Virginia.

This is a very valuable investment, which will pay off when people see it on your college application or on your resume. If you are interested in participating in the project, as a one time only content contributor or a continuing collaborator, I can be contacted at [redacted]. Thank you for your time.

Latest Updates

  • Delay Due to Tinnitus

If I have not yet heard your audition, I apologize. To explain, I recently ruptured my eardrums. They could take as much as a couple of months on hiatus to heal. Please be patient until then. Thanks for understanding !!
  • Care to Share ? BSB Is Offering Airtime

Bedtime Story is offering to split our air time on RadioFairfax w/a separate show. Our time slot is still TBD, but it will be once a week and we need to fill it w/58 minutes of pre-recorded material. We want to aim for Saturdays, from 8:00 p.m. - 8:58 p.m. EST. The division could be done one of two ways: either our episodes will be 29 minutes each, four times a month or we can each have two 58 minute episodes a month, every other week. We are leaning toward the first option. Your show must be family friendly. In other words, no obscenity whatsoever. As RadioFairfax is a non-profit station, we are not allowed to commercialize. You retain full ownership of your material; however, you may not make money off of it for a period of one year after the last day it was aired. If you are interested, please contact [email protected]. Thanks for reading !!

  • Bedtime Story Broadcast Episodes 4 and 5 - The Christmas Special Parts 1 & 2

Editing on Bedtime Story Broadcast Episode 5 - The Christmas Special Part 2 is finally finished, thanks in combination by Cindy, our new SFX Editor, and Jacob Daniels our new Audio Editor. You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZkaPnBz4KM. However, I f you have not already, I recommend listening to Episode 5 - The Christmas Special Part 1, first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8Ti1OXz-Gg. Together, they tell the full tale of "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", the Prussian novella that both the musical composition and ballet of the same name were based.

  • Note to Newbies

So, I wrote this the other day to someone and it seemed to help her, so I am sharing it here:

I will let you in on a little secret: I only *really* started at the end of April. The first time I tried exploring the possibility, I had no idea where to even start. It occurred to me to call around to all the agents and studios in my immediate area, and come to find out, 99% of the ones I talked to were self-promoting VAs working out of their homes. That is how I wound up joining a Yahoo Group for VO professionals - it was recommended to me by one of the people who picked up the phone. Anyway, I lurked for a while and when I worked up the courage at last to ask if anyone in the group could validate that my voice was worth the investment of money I would need to set up my own home studio, they went off on me about how everyone who is told that they have a nice voice thinks they have what it really takes (they claimed it took coaching and lots of money w/which to pay for it). I also found out that established VAs are very easily threatened by a novice who would come along and suggest that they might offer to work for free in exchange for experience. Then, the attack ensued. And that only assured me that I was on the right track. Sooo, I sought out volunteer organizations, and guess what ? I found one called The Learning Ally.

They welcomed me w/open arms. There, I read and record books for blind and dyslexic students. It occurred to me that there should be a similar, free service specifically for children who are not yet in school, and well, I needed all of the opportunities I could get to practice my craft, so I created my own, called Bedtime Story Broadcast. After I came up w/the concept for the show, I met a retired man, who volunteers w/me at The Learning Ally. He has retired after over 52 years of experience in radio. By this point, I was pretty convinced that people who are really serious about becoming professional VAs all have had some form of coaching. I was still insecure, especially as to whether or not I was worth this even greater investment, but I went for it asked him to help me. Much to my amazement, he agreed and for free even !! He said he wanted to pay it forward. And guess what ?! He has a show on RadioFairfax and encouraged me to make my own proposal to the station, which was approved at the end of June. W/all of the frustration I encountered while I was first finding my way, the generosity of one gentleman, and my inability to meet the station's requirement of producing one 58 minute a week show led me to realize that I could further defy the professionals who tried to discourage me, while furnishing other people in my position w/the same opportunities I have been fortunate to have.

All of us here are all learning as we go along.

  • Of what use was it to be loved and lose one's beauty and become Real if it all ended like this? And a tear, a real tear, trickled down his little shabby velvet nose and fell to the ground.

And then a strange thing happened. For where the tear had fallen a flower grew out of the ground, a mysterious flower, not at all like any that grew in the garden. It had slender green leaves the colour of emeralds, and in the centre of the leaves a blossom like a golden cup. It was so beautiful that the little Rabbit forgot to cry, and just lay there watching it. And presently the blossom opened, and out of it there stepped a fairy.

  • She was quite the loveliest fairy in the whole world. Her dress was of pearl and dew-drops, and there were flowers round her neck and in her hair, and her face was like the most perfect flower of all. And she came close to the little Rabbit and gathered him up in her arms and kissed him on his velveteen nose that was all damp from crying.

"Little Rabbit," she said, "don't you know who I am?

"The Rabbit looked up at her, and it seemed to him that he had seen her face before, but he couldn't think where.

  • "I am the nursery magic Fairy," she said. "I take care of all the playthings that the children have loved. When they are old and worn out and the children don't need them any more, then I come and take them away with me and turn them into Real."

"Wasn't I Real before?" asked the little Rabbit.

"You were Real to the Boy," the Fairy said, "because he loved you. Now you shall be Real to every one."
