Miitopia HD: The Fandub Part 1
Project Overview
What is Miitopia?
Miitopia is a lighthearted RPG released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. It is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. The story goes that you(r Mii) is a lone traveler that comes across a town. Soon after stopping by, the Dark Lord shows up. He is out to steal every single Mii's...face. It's a lot less morbid than it sounds, for anyone unfamiliar with the game. That might not sound THAT bad...but other than their favorite color, a Mii's face is the only way to be able to distinguish themselves from each other! A crime worse than murder...in all seriousness, the game consists of you travelling across the land, defeating monsters, collecting faces, and stopping the Dark Lord. Very few of these characters have actual names. Why? Well...one of the main draws of the game is that you can cast any Mii you want for any role! You can cast anyone you want as the protagonist, the Dark Lord, and pretty much any other role! (You get the idea.) It's difficult to imagine, so perhaps you would like a trailer for the game? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yru6HJnkDBwThe reason this fandub is happening now, for anyone unaware, a Miitopia port for the Nintendo Switch was announced last week! The deadline for getting the voice actors is the release date for the game, in late May.
What will this fandub be?
Miitopia is an awesome game, but one thing it lacks is voice acting. For all dialogue, the "voices" for the characters are just incoherent babbling with text. Think Animal Crossing. Though it goes without saying, this fandub will be on the Nintendo Switch version and not the 3DS version. It will be a full-story fandub, along with the small cutscenes between levels and ellipses at the Inns. The only thing that will not be dubbed over is the small Persona-esque dialogue during the levels, between fights. There will be little to no commentary over this series. I made this mistake during my last series, and I think it's what caused it to fall through. But anyway, this project is unrelated and not sponsored by Nintendo. This project will be made for fun. It was and will not be paid for, and also will not accept sponsors, monetization, or money in any way.
Unique Roles
I could just pick some iconic, funny, or goofy Miis to fill the roles, but I know that'd probably deter some people. And so that's why...if you get casted, you get to pick your character! This will be a very unique casting for a very unique game. That doesn't mean that you won't get any sort of instructions for your character's voice, though! I also ask that you have someone in mind that your character would be. If it's someone specific, or if you're impersonating another character, I'd like for you to say it with your auditions!
Minimal Requirements
- Be at least 13 years old.
- Have a decent quality mic (it can even be a phone mic, just don't have something that sounds like a tin can and a string)
- Don't have any background noise for your audition
- Have Discord
- Be open to constructive criticism, and be able to work with other people
- Be able to meet deadlines (they will be very flexible, but they will be there nonetheless)
Recommended Requirements
- Have a professional mic (Blue Snowball or better)
- Play through the entire Miitopia game (so you know everything that happens, and don't get spoiled.)
- Be okay with cartoon violence and brief crude humor.
Miscellaneous + Extra Stuff
Some of the auditions below will be sorted by appearance, and not significance. And the protagonist will not be here because...he's being voiced by yours truly! They will have the character's name if they have one in-game, their given description in-game, and my own personal description along with recommendations on their voice. By the way, there are dozens of speaking voices in this game. Not all of them are major, but if I do like your voice and you aren't casted, I may contact you about a lesser role. Keep an eye out! It depends on how many people audition, but there is a high probability that you will get a role. So go nuts!

Considering 15 of you at most will get casted for the roles next week, I wanted to fill anyone in about what'll happen on the 14th. Once everyone is casted, I'll send a message to each of you with the Discord server invite. There, I'm going to need Miis for your characters. If you don't already have a Mii that you'd like mii to use, we'll need to schedule a time where we can create a Mii together, either over a Discord call or DMs. More information in the server. By the way, while I'm typing this, I want to thank you all sincerely for the overwhelmingly positive response to the casting call. We're on track to breaking 200 auditions by the end of the deadline, and I can't thank each and every one of you enough for your time and effort. Anyway, this is the point where I'm sifting through all of the auditions once again. This is because I'm trying to save myself some time on the day of casting to know which ones that I'm likely to cast and the ones that are likely to be rejected.

Discord invite privated
Since this caused confusion earlier last month, I suppose I should clarify. The server was removed from the description after I decided it'd be better for it to be private. Not only does it make things more efficient, but there's little reason to bring extra people into the server when it's unnecessary. Maybe if the traction for this series grows enough, though! -
The deadline was moved much closer to the release date for the game.
I moved the deadline to mid-May for two reasons: One, this means I have more time to search for more voice actors and two, I'd much prefer casting people closer to the deadline since there's less time sitting around while I physically can't record because of the release date. If you've already auditioned, I ask for a bit more patience. If not, hey! Now's your chance! -
We have a Discord server!
The discord server for this project was made about an hour ago. The link for it is in the description! See you there.
It wouldn't be a party without party members. These guys (or gals) are the protagonist's friends, teammates, and helpers! How many are there, you ask...? Well, there are 9! Therefore, 3 of the people that audition here will get one of these roles. (Only 3 are needed for part 1.) And no, they aren't specific. Unless the person cast has a very strong preference, they will be assigned at random. Their personality is...up to the person that gets casted!
This role is sort of a wildcard. I would love to have a large range of voices for this role, and I do not want to provide a "reference" to risk the auditions sounding similar. They should sound heroic, maybe even like they're from an anime.
Each one can have one of 7 personalities: Kind, Energetic, Laid-Back, Cool, Stubborn, Airheaded, and Cautious. Since there are 9 of them and each one has a sizeable amount of screen time, why not audition?
(First confused, then sees the protagonist in trouble, eager to help) "How did I get here...?...Ah! Let me help you!"
(After the protagonist explains the situation, then eagerly volunteers to join) "So you're off to save the world, huh...? Can I join you?"
(During attacks, to show an exertion of force) *Various lines and grunts when the character attacks. ig, "Huun!" "Yaaah!" "Huff!"*
The main antagonist for Miitopia. He stops at nothing to steal all of the Miis' faces and put them on monsters. Why? Well...that's major spoiler territory. But I assure you, it's a lot deeper than it sounds. I'm looking for a low or medium-low voice, but also make sure you can do a slightly higher voice, too. I don't want to say why, but people that played or saw the ending knows why! This voice should sound very evil, and be sure to be intimidating for your voice lines, but not overly so. And a good reference for his voice is somewhat like Lex Luthor, deep and foreboding and openly trying to strike fear into the hearts of the townspeople. However, I also imagine a more fun spin on it. Considering the situations we see the Dark Lord in are serious, but obviously E for Everyone conflict, making his voice TOO intimidating would almost come off as comical in my eyes.
(Confident, evil) "Mwaa ha ha haaa! I am the Dark Lord! I've come to wreak havoc and terror on this miserable little world! And I'm starting with YOU, people of Greenhorne!"
(Monologuing, after stealing about half of the town's faces) "Listen up, you faceless freaks! Get used to a life of wordless terror, because that's what you're stuck with!"
(Cocky, when the protagonist demands a face back) "What, this ol' thing? Hrrm. Maybe I will give this one back to you...but you'll have to earn it.
The Guardian Spirit (and yes, I know this character doesn't have a name. But that's what they call themselves the first time they introduce themselves, so that's the name I'm giving them.) comes from the family heirloom that Worried Mother gives the protagonist. They make their appearance right before the first fight and end up giving the protagonist their class(es). Honestly, I don't really know what I want for this voice since we never SEE them. However, to give you an idea, a good reference is Arceus from Pokemon. Both are godly figures, and a deeper, slightly grander voice is what I'D do.
(Relieved, after asking the protagonist if they can hear them) "Ho ho! It does seem like you're hearing me...what good fortune this is!"
(Hesitant, trying to explain who they are) "Now, you may not believe this, but I'm kind of a...guardian spirit."
(Stuttering, obviously trying to improvise some wise words before giving the protagonist their powers) "I..err...bestoweth upon thee the awesome power of the guardian! Huuuuurgh...HAAAAA!"
The Great Sage appears early in the game. He/She saves the protagonist from the Dark Lord, and appears multiple times in the game, offering wise words during each encounter. Any kind of voice works for them! If you really want a reference for the voice, I would steer you toward King Rhoam from Legend of Zelda, the best of which being in Hyrule Warriors. A wiser voice, with the ability to be encouraging in some lines and courageous in others! By the way, I SERIOUSLY recommend at least watching a playthrough of the game before you audition. Just saying.
(Heroic, right before stopping the Dark Lord's attack offscreen) "Hold it right there!"
(Thoughtful, after he/she hears that the protagonist is on a quest to defeat the Dark Lord) "So you're on a quest to defeat the Dark Lord?...But you feel you're not quite strong enough?...I sense a strange power within you, though."
(Encouraging, right before their exit) "If fortune is on our side, we'll meet again. Until then!"
The first character the protagonist meets. The Carefree Guide doesn't listen to their warning about the monsters...and ends up getting their face stolen! A laid-back voice is a must for this role. Just imagine not caring or even thinking about your own words before you say them. I'd like a voice that sounds sort of like Akechi from Persona with a few small tweaks. By that, I mean that I want that sort of charm in the voice that you hear from him, but with the description above in mind.
(Doubtful, the distraught protagonist tries to warn him about the monsters) "Hm? What's up with you?...Monsters with people's faces?...Gyahaha! You gotta be kidding me!"
(Shocked, right when the Dark Lord appears) "Hey! What's that?!"
(Grateful, after the protagonist returns your face) "Oh! Is my face back on? That's a relief. Sticking all those faces on monsters...who'd even do that?"
It's said that she is very cheery (who would've guessed?) and has a very bright smile. However...that smile ends up getting stolen by the Dark Lord! I'm looking for a medium-high voice, maybe with a British or English accent, since one of her lines has her saying "round" instead of "around." She should sound boisterous, but not TOO energetic. When I think of that, I think of Nate's mom from Yo-Kai Watch. A caring voice, motherly, and maybe even try to be overly sweet.
(Friendly, First time meeting the protagonist) "Oh! An adventurer!...Why the long face? You can't go round looking like that!"
(Surprised, in response to Carefree Guide's line: "Hey! What's that?!") "What? Where?! Oh!"
(Overjoyed, when she finally gets her face back) "My smile's back! I'm as happy as a...really happy person!"
The Child (and no, I'm not talking about Baby Yoda) is very energetic, innocent, and childlike. They are never very serious about any situation, like a child, and their lines are relatively short, and one of the characters that you really need to watch gameplay for full context. Their voice should be high-pitched, and sound like...well...a child! With that description in mind, try listening to Hestu's voice from Legend of Zelda, Hyrule Warriors. I do recommend, however, to tone down the goofiness in his voice. I encourage being fun with the voice, but not so much so that the audience doesn't take them seriously at ALL.
(Playful, first meeting the protagonist) "Wheeeee! Woo-hooooo! I'm a dragon! Raaaarrr!"
(Very worried, when the Dark Lord appears) "W-what is it, Mommy?"
(Happy, after their face gets returned) "Yippee!!! I'm back!"
Mother of Sassy Child. Most of her character is worried and frustrated over her kid. She also gives the protagonist the heirloom that ends up giving them their powers. Looking for a voice that sounds like someone who just got done playing, or chasing, their energetic kid. A good base of the voice would be Mercy from Overwatch. I say "base" because even that isn't EXACTLY what I'm going for. I would also recommend losing the German accent if you want to and sounding more worried. I'd also make it sound like you are slightly fatigued. If you want to, maybe you can ACTUALLY do a small workout just to give yourself that natural tone of voice.
(Frustrated, watching her child play and meeting the protagonist) "Calm down, or you'll hurt yourself! This child has me at my wit's end!...Oh! An adventurer. Please excuse me."
(Panicking, trying to calm down after seeing her child's face getting stolen) "My poor baby! Don't panic...don't panic...Oh! Adventurer!"
(Overly relieved, after Sassy Child's face gets returned) "Are you OK?! You're not hurt, are you?"
This is one part of a larger role. The couple is very close and isn't afraid to show it. Not like THAT, but playful sweet talk in an E-rated way. Later, he's forced to watch his girlfriend's face get taken away! Both he and the female role in this two-part character, contrary to almost everyone else, is ENTIRELY comedic effect. I'd recommend piling it on, making almost every line in that lovey-dovey tone. And even the ones that aren't like that, try to make it sound like he could slip back into that voice at any time. (Just a heads up, this role can have a strange line or two. I hope you're okay with that...)
(Talking to girlfriend) "D'awww...you're so cute!...I feel like I'm dreaming..." (I told you this could be a little strange at points.)
(Distraught, after his girlfriend's face is taken) "My love's pretty face!...Now she can't even whisper sweet nothings..."
This is one part of a larger role. The couple is very close and isn't afraid to show it. But not like THAT, but playful sweet talk in an E-rated way. Her face is one of many that ends up getting taken! Both she and the male role in this two-part character, contrary to almost everyone else, is ENTIRELY comedic effect. I'd recommend piling it on, making almost every line in that lovey-dovey tone. And even the ones that aren't like that, try to make it sound like she could slip back into that voice at any time. (Just a heads up, this role can have a strange line or two. I hope you're okay with that...)
(Talking to her boyfriend, all responding to the male's lines; See the male role's first audition for context!) "Tee hee hee!...No, you're cute!...Shall I pinch you? Tee hee hee!" (I said a couple lines got a couple weird.)
(Her happy reaction to getting her face back) "Look! It's back! It's all thanks to this adventurer."
His tone should be more deadpan overall. He rarely ever gets excited about stuff. He's also the type of person to give you 10 coins for saving your life. Not speaking from experience or anything. In all seriousness, he should also have more of a New Yorker accent, or really any accent that you think would go with the lines he says. While he sort of reminds me of Harry and Marv from Home Alone, I think a better representation (or at least something to combine it with) would be something along the lines of McCree from Overwatch, without the western accent of course. A deeper, deadpan voice that obviously cares about a whole lot of nothing.
(First part is meeting the protagonist, the second part is sarcastic) "We don't see your type often. You here visiting or something?"
"Huuuh, some kind of relaxation vacation, is it? Must be nice for you. I'm soooo jealous."
(Sort of nervous, sounds like he's slowly snapping out of boredom. After seeing the Dark Lord) "This can't be good..."
(Slightly relieved, after he gets his face back, but should sound almost forced.) "Ah, got my face back! I got mixed up with a bad'un. You're not a bad sort, I suppose."
The mayor of Greenhorne. He should sound friendly, but also sort of fatigued for some of the lines. He should also sound slightly older, as I imagine him as being the mayor for a while. Especially how he talks about the town, like he's seen it from the mayor's perspective for a while. And, while I don't want you to lean into this too much, he should sound tired. Imagine a long day of work and a new person walks up to you. Maybe even an hour or two before you go home for the day. I was thinking you could replicate Toro from Nomad of Nowhere. Maybe slightly higher pitched. The link below includes who I'm talking about, and the voice actor for him describes almost one for one what I'd want.
https://youtu.be/zg3bdspvIiQ (About 1:48)
(Slightly tired, like he's said this multiple times before; meeting the protagonist) "Greenhorne's a nice town. But I'm the mayor, so I kinda have to say that."
(Petrified, a mayor watching his townspeople's faces getting taken) "Ohhh! It's terrible! Th-Their f-faces!"
(Surprised, seeing all of the people's faces getting returned) "What? When did the town get back to normal? ... Oh, that's good news. Very good news, indeed!"
The guard for Greenhorne Castle. They're polite, but won't let the protagonist pass without the letter of introduction from the mayor. This happens after all of Greenhorne's faces are saved. Yep. You voice a roadblock. They're polite, but still direct and firm. Their reference, ironically, is the Soldier from Team Fortress 2. Not just because of their name. His voice demonstrates what I'd want: A serious, gruff voice that teeters on being funny and entertaining!
(No-nonsense) "You are approaching Greenhorne Castle. I'm sorry, but I can't..."
(Realization, after showing the letter of introduction that the mayor gives the protagonist) "Oh! You have a letter of introduction from the mayor! My apologies. Go right ahead!"
