Fallout 4 Quest Mod - "Mind Games" (Call#3)

Project Overview

Hi everyone! I’m looking for voice actors for a new story-driven quest mod for “Fallout 4”. I'm holding these casting calls in stages, filling different roles at each stage. For this third call, I am casting for a number of lead, supporting and minor roles.

About Fallout 4 and Mind Games

“Fallout 4” is a role-playing game set in and around Boston, MA (aka the Commonwealth) during the year 2287, where communities are rebuilding 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse. “Mind Games” puts the player character in the role of a detective on the case of a missing person, which leads to a broader story that connects to the plot from the base game.

You can find a clip of the mod above, which will also give you a better understanding of the story, setting and some of the characters that are mentioned in the role descriptions below (but it's about 20 minutes long so don't feel you need to watch all of it!).

The Roles

The characters I am currently casting are as follows. All characters (except for Chip) are residents of a settlement called The Sluice, which has been built into a sewer junction beneath Boston. You must be aged 18 or over to audition.

Lead role (around 400 lines):

  • Penelope, female robot and potential companion, ageless adult - robotic assistant - British accent

  • The Lieutenant, male robot and potential companion, ageless adult - robotic soldier - British accent

  • Chip Mortimer, male, 20s - seemingly a trader, but later revealed to be a mercenary, and one of the story's main antagonists - American accent

Supporting roles (200 - 300 lines):

  • William Reeves, male, late 30s - doctor - American accent

  • Angie Russell, female, 30s - bartender - American accent

  • Fred Newman, male, ghoul, ageless adult - engineer - American accent w/ ghoul rasp*

  • MacMurray, male, ghoul, ageless adult - vendor - British accent w/ ghoul rasp*

  • Griffiths, male, ghoul, ageless adult - vendor - British accent w/ ghoul rasp*

  • Faizal Khanna, male, 30s - engineer - American accent

Minor roles (less than 100 lines):

  • Mary Carlyle, female, late 40s / early 50s - doctor - American accent

  • Alan Cox, male, 40s / 50s - vendor - American accent

  • Sandra Cox, female, 40s - vendor - American accent

  • Angela Meyers, female, ghoul, ageless adult - bar patron - American accent w/ ghoul rasp*

  • Eliza, female, 10 - child - American accent

* = ghouls in Fallout are highly irradiated humans that have a trademark raspy voice. You can hear a couple of examples here:

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRHVMTPNQA0 (male)

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWq4b08O8dU (female)

Content Guidance

  • Rare sexual references

  • Frequent strong language

  • Frequent references to violence and substance abuse

Compensation

The mod is a non-commercial fan project without funding, so I cannot offer anything close to industry rates. I value the talent and effort actors bring with them, so I’d like to offer something where I can, and I can budget for a flat $35 for the project for the lead role and $25 for supporting roles. For the minor roles, I'm afraid I can't offer compensation but, as it's a fan project, hopefully you'll be up for doing it for fun!

Payment ideally via paypal after you’ve accepted the role.

Requirements

  • A good mic setup so that we can make the voices and the mod as a whole feel like part of the main game.

  • No experience is necessary but clean recordings are really important.

The audition

For the audition itself, you don’t need to stick exactly to the lines. Feel free to change the words and improvise if it feels right. You are very welcome to do more than one take, if you wish (either AABBCC or ABCABC - whichever you prefer).

Everyone is welcome to audition for more than one role. Anyone who has already been cast in this mod is welcome to audition too.

Working style

  • No live voice-acting sessions, so you’ll be free to do the recordings as you want, but within specified timeframes (which I try to keep as flexible as possible so that we can work around your schedule).

  • Please be prepared to do pick-ups / re-recordings if necessary.

  • Ad-libbing is encouraged if it feels right for you, with the only caveat being that the lines of the other characters are fixed, so we’ll have to respect that in order for the dialogue to flow.

  • You will not be expected to edit, cut or process the recordings that you send me, but they will need to be in a specific format to work in the game (that being 44100hz, 16-bit, mono WAV). **Please note the format requirements only apply to the lines you send me after you have been cast. I've heard CCC handles mp3s better than it does WAVs, so please feel free to upload your auditions as mp3s.**

Latest Updates

  • Thank you again for all the auditions (casting complete)

With over 700 auditions, the amount of interest and talent has been absolutely remarkable. I'm sorry it took so long to finish casting - with so many amazing auditions, I wanted to take the time to be sure about my decisions.

I've now cast all the roles. Sorry if you weren't selected this time around - it really was a case of trying to somehow choose one from a number of equally excellent auditions. Unfortunately I can't give meaningful feedback to everyone but I'll be getting in touch where I think I've got something specific to offer.

There'll be a fourth casting call in the new year so I hope you'll take a look at that one too. Thank you again for taking the time to audition.

  • Thank you for all the auditions

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for your interest in the project. There were just over 700 auditions in total and, with so many of them being as amazing as they are, it's going to take me a little while to finish casting. Hopefully I'll have all decisions made by next week.

    Thanks again!

  • Deadline extended to 6th December

    Hi everyone

Thanks again for all your awesome auditions. A few people have asked if I can push the deadline back to after the weekend since it's easier for them to audition during the weekend and, being a Brit, I didn't realise it was Thanksgiving last weekend when I posted the casting call. So I've decided to change the deadline to 6th December so that these folks can get their auditions in.

Thank you for your patience and for your interest in the project. The level of talent has been really amazing.

  • New and updated roles for Fallout 4: Mind Games

    Hi everyone!

It's been amazing to see so many great auditions so far. Thank you to everyone who's interested in this project. Just a couple of updates:

    • First, the role of Penelope is now a lead role instead of a supporting role as her line count has increased in the mod.

    • Second, a character that I was going to cast in the fourth call, I've instead moved up to this call as I realised I needed to start work on him a little earlier than originally planned. The character is another lead called The Lieutenant and is a military robot with a British accent. Details and audition lines are on the project page.

    Thanks!

Paid: Flat Rate 35 USD
Role assigned to: Helen Irwin

Female robot - British accent

Penelope is a robot tasked with assisting MacMurray at his stall in The Sluice. She is sardonic (but not cold) with a posh (or fairly posh) English accent. Robots like Penelope don't speak in a robotic fashion, but rather they sound like humans - sighing, exhaling, laughing, clearing their throats, etc. She is a potential companion.

Line 0 notes: You were alone in the sewers, fighting off feral ghouls when the Player came to your aid. The fight has just ended and you have a moment to catch your 'breath'.

Line 1 notes: The Player has asked if you know someone named Riley but you don't. Unhelpfully, all the Player can tell you is he's an adult male.

Voice description:

  • Ah, thank you for that. I daresay I would have taken care of those wretched beasts myself but the help is appreciated nonetheless.

  • Hmm. I don't have any knowledge of a man named Riley. I could however check through my database for everyone matching the description of 'adult' and 'male'. Unless you think that would be a terrible waste of our time?

Male robot - British accent

Originally a military robot, The Lieutenant is currently tasked with assisting MacMurray at his stall in The Sluice. Robots like The Lieutenant don't speak in a robotic fashion, but rather they sound like humans - sighing, exhaling, laughing, clearing their throats, etc. He sounds like a gruff SAS soldier, and is a potential companion.

Line 0 notes: Jumping into combat as if you're leading a squad.

Line 1 notesThe Player asks if you know someone named Riley.

Paid: Flat Rate 35 USD
Role assigned to: ranthonynegron

Male, 20s - seemingly a trader, but later revealed to be a mercenary, and one of the story's main antagonists - American accent

Chip presents himself as a slightly down-on-his luck trader trying to find his way in the wasteland. He has a warm and friendly personality, and was previously training to be a Minuteman, a protector of the settlers around the Commonwealth, though he was never the most confident or capable person. Two years on, that has all changed. After the Minutemen's demise, Chip fell in with a group of mercenaries called the Gunners. He is now a ruthless and ambitious young mercenary, masked behind his friendly persona.

Line 0 notes: You and Katelyn were close friends before she left for a life on the road two years ago. There was always a spark between you but nothing happened. You see her unexpectedly in a settlement and approach her. You maintain the friendly persona that Katelyn remembers.

Line 1 notes: Maintaining the cover from above. You don't want Katelyn to know that you are more confident and capable than she remembers.

Line 2 notes: You've been revealed as a Gunner and have been fatally wounded in a shoot-out. Katelyn, heartbroken, points a gun at you. Your mask has dropped completely as you cough up blood. It's all venom now. You welcome the end with a blood-stained smile.

  • Katelyn? Is that you? (She turns to you) Well, hey there. Didn't expect to see you around here. What are you doing back in the Commonwealth?

  • Hey, would you mind if I tag along with you guys back to Diamond City? It's, you know, kinda dangerous out there.

  • *Cough* Never thought you had it in you. *Cough* Go on. Do it.

Paid: Flat Rate 25 USD
Role assigned to: Paul Warren

Male, late 30s - doctor - American accent

A doctor at The Sluice, reporting to Mary Carlyle. Warm and friendly, but has had plenty of experience patching people up under fire, and is capable in a fight. Alongside his responsibilities in The Sluice's clinic, William is also a member of a resistance movement called The Railroad.

Line 0 notes: The Player has approached you with the call sign of The Railroad, which is "Do you have a Geiger counter?" Surprised, you reply with the countersign "Mine is in the shop". You have no idea who the Player is or that they were in The Railroad.

Line 1 notes: You're leading the Player through the sewers to someone that they want to talk to. As you do, you're telling the Player about The Sluice and the surrounding tunnels. Things have become a bit more complicated down here since a mob boss, Luca Petrelli, has recently staked a claim to all the tunnels.

Voice description:
  • male adult

  • (Slowly with some caution / suspicion) Mine is in the shop. (Then faster) Wait, who are you? What are you doing here?

  • Moving around down here is easy enough if you know which tunnels to go down and which ones to avoid. Course, that's not going to be as easy now with Petrelli's men around.

Female, 30s - bartender - American accent

Angie runs the bar in an underground settlement called The Sluice. She's confident, sassy and good-natured, and she doesn't tolerate trouble in her bar.

Line 0 notes: Nick and his friends have walked into your bar and an argument has broken out amongst some of the patrons over whether they should be allowed to stay. You personally think Nick should stay. You've had enough of the argument and call out to get everyone's attention (please improvise this bit with whatever you like!)

Line 1 notes: After the vote above. The patrons have quietened down, and Nick and his friends walk up to the bar. You're glad the vote went in favor of Nick staying.

Voice description:

  • [Improvised line to get everyone's attention]. I say we put it to a vote. Sound fair? Everyone who thinks Nick and his friends should stay, say "Aye".

  • Well, looks like you're staying. So what'll it be? We found a truck full of booze in one of the tunnels so plenty to go around.

Paid: Flat Rate 25 USD
Role assigned to: spacefiddle

Male, ghoul - engineer - American accent - ghoul rasp

Fred is a 250-year-old ghoul living at The Sluice. A mechanic before the apocalypse, he's good with his hands and is responsible for maintaining the settlement's defenses. Warm and friendly. Fred has the trademark rasp that all ghouls have. You can find an example in the description but Fred would need to sound a bit older than that. A good example is this character named (click for video -->) Arlen. But Arlen carries a lot of sorrow with him, whereas Fred doesn't, so Fred shouldn't sound quite as 'broken' as Arlen does.

Line 0 notes: The settlement has been wary of a raider attack for the past couple of days. The Player dealt with the threat earlier. (Larsen runs security in The Sluice).

Line 1 notes: The Player has said you're lucky they were there to stop the raiders. But if it hadn't been for the Player's earlier actions, the raiders would never have attacked. You're grateful for the Player's help but at the same time (especially since the Player is coming across as a bit arrogant by saying you're lucky) you want to gently remind them this whole situation was pretty much their fault. ("Common" is Boston Common).

Line 2 notes: The Player has just told you The Sluice is a dump. Katelyn (a friend of yours) has snapped at them for being rude but you're not fazed. You've lived too many years to be offended by things like that, and you're able to take it in your stride, even making a self-deprecating joke at the end since you don't have a nose anymore.

Voice description:
  • all american accents
  • male senior
  • Hey there. Thanks for taking care of those raiders. Larsen was sure they were going to try and shoot their way in here any day now. Don't know if they would have succeeded, but luckily we don't have to find out.

  • Well, some people would say we're unlucky you came to the Common in the first place, but maybe that's just being pedantic.

  • It's all right. It's not to everyone's taste. At least it doesn't smell too bad down here anymore. Or so I'm told.

Paid: Flat Rate 25 USD
Role assigned to: McNaughtVO

Male, ghoul, adult - vendor - British accent with ghoul rasp

MacMurray is a ghoul from the UK, currently running a general goods store at The Sluice. He was visiting Boston to try to secure funding for his start-up with his associate, Griffiths, just before the nuclear war and has been stuck there ever since. He has a talent for sales but is irritated that it's wasted on selling scrap in a sewer. He and Griffiths (who also has a store in The Sluice) have developed a deep resentment for each other over the past 200 years. MacMurray is sharp and direct. He has a trademark raspy voice like other ghouls but with a British accent (any part of Britain).

Line 0 notes: Trying to entice the Player to shop at your market stall.

Line 1 notes: You haven't met the Player yet but you see them talking to Griffiths about buying something, a little way from your stall. You call out with a raised voice (but not shouting).

Voice description:

  • Hey, whatever it is you're looking for, I've got it right here.

Male, ghoul, adult - vendor - British accent with ghoul rasp

Griffiths is a ghoul from the UK, currently running a general goods store at The Sluice. He and MacMurray (who also has a store in The Sluice) have developed a deep resentment for each other over the past 200 years. Griffiths is meeker and more measured compared to MacMurray, with his thoughts often occupied by his previous life (which is why he wears a wig). He has a trademark raspy voice like other ghouls but with a British accent (any part of Britain).

Line 0 notes: The Player has approached your stall.

Line 1 notes: The Player asks why MacMurray is angry at you.

Voice description:

Male, 30s - engineer - American accent

Faizal is one of the mechanics living at The Sluice, helping maintain turrets and other defenses. Mild-mannered and prefers to just get on with the job. He is also a member of a resistance movement called The Railroad.

Line 0 notes: Some mobsters have been in the area but they've gone now, leaving the way clear for you and a couple of others to fix up some turrets on the settlement perimeter. Mason is the head of The Sluice and has said he'll go with you to provide protection while you're working on the turrets.

Line 1 notes: The Player has told you he's looking for someone named Riley. Riley was recently recruited into the Railroad but botched one of his missions to help a synth (an artificial human referred to here as "a package") escape its creator.

Voice description:

  • Hey, Mason. Looks like those guys are gone. We're gonna go fix up those turrets now.

Female, late 40s / early 50s - doctor - American accent

Mary is the lead doctor at The Sluice. Practical and direct but not too cold.

Line 0 notes: The Player asks you for medical attention, taking you away from the research you were doing.

Line 1 notes: The Player asks you to treat their radiation sickness. Although it's safe to be by the water in the sewers, jumping in is a good way to get irradiated. You hope that that's not why you're being pulled away from your research.

Female, 40s - vendor - American accent

Sandra Cox is a clothing and armor trader at The Sluice, running a store alongside her husband, Alan, who sells weapons and ammo. Neither are hustlers, but rather just earning an honest living, running their simple store.

Line 0 notes: The Sluice has been on lockdown recently because of the threat of a raider attack. The threat has passed and you're glad things have opened up again so you can trade with outsiders.

Line 1 notes: The Player has asked if you know someone called Riley, but you don't. The Player knew Riley was here trading for parts, so it's likely he was trading with MacMurray and Griffiths, who are difficult to get on with and almost always feuding with each other.

Voice description:

Role assigned to: Phoenix_Emrys

Female, ghoul, adult - bar patron - American accent with ghoul rasp

Angela is a 240-year-old ghoul living at The Sluice, who spends most of her time drinking at the bar. She silently laments her youth and beauty but covers it up with a charming and forward personality. She wants to live life as she did before the war, and talking to the same people at the bar night after night isn't cutting it. Angela has the trademark rasp of ghouls (example linked in the description above).

Line 0 notes: The Player asks if you know Riley. You might know something but you're attracted to the Player and you want to go back in time to when you could have anyone you wanted. You decide to make a proposition, but out of the earshot of the Player's companions.

Line 1 notes: As you and the Player talk about what it's like being a ghoul, the Player reveals that they were cyrogenically frozen and they're over 200 years old. They comment that they can see the upside of a ghoul's enhanced lifespan.

Voice description:

  • I might know something. How about you and I talk alone for a moment?

  • *Chuckle* I don't think so. You might be happy being 200 years old but, trust me, you don't want to see 300. The novelty of life wears out very quickly.

Female, 10 - child - American accent

Eliza is a headstrong 10-year-old girl, daughter of Larsen and Michelle, who feature in the video at the top of this page. She likes to think of herself as a security guard, just like her dad.

Line 0 notes: Larsen tells the Player that he and his team keep any undesireables out of The Sluice. He then calls over his shoulder at you, shouting encouragingly "Isn't that right?"

Line 1 notes: Larsen playfully asks you, as the security guard in charge of course, whether it's okay for Nick and his friends to go into the Sluice. You look them up and down and put on your best bossy voice.
