Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth GAME FANDUB

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth GAME FANDUB

Project Overview

You've likely at the very least heard of the Digimon Franchise in your lifetime. Be it the card game that has been rising in popularity, watching the anime when you were a kid, or maybe even playing the games... Or maybe you're even a huge fan of the entire franchise, like me!

This project is my love letter to Digimon as a whole.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is one of the first Digimon game entries to specifically target an adult audience. But despite its serious topics, it never loses that silly charm that the Anime and other games are known for; be it the little critters, the massive mechs, or the silly comedy: This game has it all, combined with great gameplay and an incredible story, that will keep you entranced. The only thing it doesn't have is an English Dub, which I plan to fix with this project!

Join the cast as our Protagonist, Takumi, becomes a Cyber Sleuth and solves cases upon cases on the search to regain his body and help his friends along the way. It's a story of smiles, a story of tears, but most importantly: It's a story of friendship, and how if we believe in it, we can do things we never would have thought possible. I look forward to your auditions!

Prerequisites

  1. Good Microphone Quality. For the main cast in particular, this is a must. You don’t need to have a proper studio set up or anything extraordinary like that, a USB Microphone with no excessive reverb or mouth-clicks is perfectly fine– but an earbud/phone microphone isn’t.

  2. Willingness to work in a long-term project. Due to the sheer size of Cyber Sleuth, we’re probably facing a long-term project that will last at least a year, with you getting about a month per script to read. Should you be unable to meet the deadlines, I can make exceptions and give you an extension! Just make sure you tell me, and we will definitely be able to work something out. 🙂

  3. Discord, the main platform we will use to communicate together + sort out scripts, etc.

  4. Digimon knowledge is far from necessary. If you like Digimon or even played Cyber Sleuth, then hey, that’s a great bonus! But don’t worry if you haven’t.

  5. I would like for the first session to be live-directed, so I can meet you properly and help you get an extra good grip on the character! It’ll be a generally lighthearted session, so no need to feel pressured.

  1. Please be 18+! Cyber Sleuth has some messed up themes that I’d rather not voice with minors. Thank you!

  • A mistake regarding Gorou Matayoshi's casting.

Good evening, morning, or whatever time it may be in your timezone! I have a slightly embarrassing confession to make.

I messed up Matayoshi's role, accidentaly selecting it as an "actor" role and not a "voice actor" role. I could not delete it however, due to there already being an audition, so instead I merely closed it and replaced it with another casting for the proper role and talent that is being sought out.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and thank those who pointed it out.

Role Description

Takumi is what I would describe as a semi-silent protagonist. He does technically talk– but oftentimes his words are echoed to us through another character. I.e. We see Takumi moving his lips, and then another character will say “Why am I doing ___? Oh that’s simple.”

He does still have a decent amount of lines due to being present in the entire game, as well as the choices the player has to make being voiced.

I’d imagine a youthful yet relaxed voice for him, as he is comparatively cool & collected, albeit not without his hot-headed moments. Medium to High Pitch.

Character Description

Takumi is a 17-year-old student with a strong sense of protectiveness. As such, when he found out that Nokia, someone he’d only met on an online forum, was going to try and meet a hacker, he did not hesitate to join her. During said encounter, Takumi’s Digivice got hacked and the “Digimon Capture Program” got installed on it, leading to an adventure full of Digimon, Hackers, and most importantly, friends.

When he, Nokia, and Arata first go to Kowloon– the main platform for hackers to communicate– they get attacked by a malicious program called an “EATER”. While Arata attempted to open an exit gate, Takumi shielded his two new friends, fending the eater off until they managed to escape. Then, he attempted to escape himself– but right as he went through the gate, the eater got to him, eating his data… But not all of it. Only his body’s data was consumed, leaving him stranded in the real world, a mass of Zeroes and Ones, of data. Kyoko Kuremi, a detective, helped him– and now, he works for her in an attempt to find a way to regain his physical body.

  • [Serious, but in a comedic way.] Arata. Please, listen to what I’m about to say, okay? No matter what Kyoko tells you, no matter how sweet she sounds– do not try her coffee. It’s the spawn of the devil, and I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but it’s not.

  • [Reassuring] I don’t think so! You’re an incredible leader! How many other Hacker Teams can say that they’ve gathered this many members in, what, a week? If you keep this up, we’ll be competing with Zaxon in no time!

  • [The big final fight has just begun. Determined.] I don’t care what you say! We’ve all made it through so much these past few months… So even if it means that we might not get out of here in one piece, I don’t care! I’m gonna stop you!

Role Description

Nokia’s VA should be able to portray her energetic attitude as well as her silly comic-relief side. Due to her unbridled confidence in herself, both as a person and physically, being able to brag naturally is a key skill that is necessary for voicing her. She also frequently does the “Noblewoman’s Laugh,”  so that, too, is an important skill necessary for voicing her.

Nokia should have a fairly high voice, think Cherami Leigh. Below I’ve sourced two voice references, one for the Japanese Original, and one for Cherami Leigh because I could totally see a similar voice like hers for Nokia.

Japanese Sample

(Includes the aforementioned “Noblewoman’s Laugh” at 4:07.)

English Sample

Keep in mind that these samples only serve as a reference and you do not need to replicate them perfectly. They’re more of a guideline than a “rule”.

Character Description

Nokia is a confident yet silly young lady and a key character in Cyber Sleuth.

Oftentimes she serves as comic relief, by accidentally showing feats of incredible strength, then wondering how she did that, and lastly backpedaling and pretending like she meant to do so all along.

She is one of the few people who immediately believe Digimon to be living beings upon seeing them, and not just programs– finding her partners Agumon and Gabumon adorable, and ending up fighting for the liberation of all Digimon who are being treated poorly by hackers. She represents the more “classic” Digimon Fan, both through her perception of Digimon and through her character. Throughout the game, she becomes one of the most powerful “Hackers” in Cyber Sleuth’s continuity, though she prefers the term “Tamer”.

You LIKE someone, don’t you?! But… You already have me. Wait! Could that be why you’re asking me?! You’re trying to win my heart?!

  • [Fighting a Hacker who claims that Digimon are nothing but programs.] Digimon are not just programs, how many times do I have to tell you?! They have emotions, feelings, senses, personalities… Aaaah, but I just can’t get it into your thick skull, can I?! Alright then! I took a crash course and beefed up my skills! I won’t go down as easily as last time!

  • Noblewoman’s laugh. Cocky.] Ohohoho! How do you like that?! The miracle that the bond between me and my Digimon made reality! [Realizes that she has no clue what just happened.] …Eh? EH?! Waaah! Wargreymon?! Metalgarurumon?! W-w-w-what happened to you guys?!

Role Description

Yuuko is very calm and collected, albeit slightly aloof, and rarely raises her voice. Her passions are few and far between, with one of the few she openly shows being food. Therefore she should speak in an elegant, quiet manner.

The pitch of her voice is up to you. I could see anything from high to a low tone– truthfully, the most important aspect is definitely getting her mannerisms down.

Character Description [TW: Mentions of Suicide]

She is a selfless person, wanting no one with good intentions to have to suffer from any pain or sorrow. Despite her meek exterior, she has a lion’s spirit, ready to fight for the truth of her father’s untimely demise.

Supposedly her father, the former leader of Kamishiro Enterprises, committed Suicide– but Yuuko does not believe that one bit. Thus, she asks for the help of our Cyber Sleuth’s detective agency, in an attempt to uncover the truth with risky maneuvers and hot-headed attempts that, at first glance, completely defy her personality. This, however, merely proves her determination to find the truth and justice in the world.

[Spoilers ahead!]

In an attempt to fight for said justice, Yuuko has adapted the persona of her deceased brother, Yuugo, and has become one of the most feared Hackers in all of EDEN. With a fake avatar and a fake demeanor, Yuuko yearns to bring EDEN back to its former glory, back to the days when it wasn’t plastered with Hackers. Throughout the game, however, she realizes that she cannot hide behind the facade of her deceased brother forever– So she stands up for herself and becomes her own person, fighting for what she believes to be right on her own.

Voice description:
  • female teen
  • [Calm and collected, yet with a suppressed tinge of worry.] My father, Satoru Kamishiro… His notes and research data should be stored in the Avalon Server. Could you also get those for me? I’m sure that the truth about my father’s suicide and info related to EDEN Syndrome is somewhere in there.

  • Talking to the AI of her deceased brother, quiet to determined.] …You are, without question, the best brother anyone could ever ask for… And it’s for that very reason that I felt so comfortable, taking on the guise of you… terrible as I am. Because of that, I was manipulated by Rie and ended up throwing EDEN into chaos… So I won’t allow myself to depend on you anymore! Today is the day… that I delete you!

  • [Shy to smiling. Giving Takumi advice on a present for a girl (for a case)] I think… You should tell your client that he’s going about it the wrong way. Asking someone else to find “the perfect gift” is wrong– even if they were to buy something glamorous or expensive, it wouldn’t be coming from the heart. What’s truly important is to think of something genuine, to show that you’ve put thought into the present.

Role Description

Being the benevolent leader of Zaxon, the most powerful group in all of EDEN, Yuugo can deliver powerful speeches that persuade even the most stubborn people to join him. His calm, smooth, composed voice is rarely raised, unless it is to rally his fellow teammates. His enemies have dubbed him “The Ghost of EDEN,” or alternatively “The Ghost of the White Boy.”

His voice is frighteningly calm, proof that he sees none as a true challenge. He has a fairly high-pitched voice that is as smooth as butter.

Character Description

Yuugo cares a lot about EDEN, his desire to protect it and help it regain its beauty being the main reason he formed Zaxon to begin with. He believes himself to be EDEN’s protector, and that other hacker groups, such as Nokia’s, should not burden themselves with attempting to uphold its safety.

Despite being a hacker, Yuugo seems to share in Nokia’s beliefs that Digimon are living beings, asking Takumi to protect her and her kindness. He is also the one to teach Takumi how to use the Digimon Capture program, being stunned by the boy’s desire to save three Digimon that were in deep trouble. Calling Takumi “interesting,” he follows him into the depths of Kowloon, impressed that this complete newbie to Digimon Capturing could see past the facade of ones and zeroes that makes a Digimon.

He is one of the most feared and powerful hacker’s in all of cyberspace, with his mighty Machinedramon sending all his opponent’s running, quaking in their boots.

Voice description:

  • [Giving Takumi his first Digimon, kind] To make a Digimon your partner, you first have to scan its data. Then, once the scanning process is complete, you can convert said data using the Digimon Capture program. That’s all you have to do, really.

  • [Warning Takumi, composed yet threatening] I truly don’t wish to hurt you– but if you attempt to get in my way, or in Zaxon’s way, rather… Then I may not have a choice. Do you understand what I’m saying? Do us both a favor and stay safe.

  • [Asking Takumi a favor, sweet.] I suppose we can’t stop her after all, can we? (Sigh)... Takumi, I have a favor to ask of you. Protect her. Nokia, I mean. I know she means well, but sometimes she can be… a little too hot-headed for her own good. So look after her. I do not want EDEN to claim another untimely victim.

Role Description

Being the cool-headed detective mentor of Takumi and the head of the Kuremi Detective Agency, she has a mature and composed voice, incredibly rarely raising her voice. Through objective deductions rivaling that of the greatest minds humanity has ever seen, she has earned many a title and infamy in Nakano. Of course, being a detective, Kyoko tends to be a little too objective at times… Still, she has a joking and teasing side to her as well, especially towards Takumi and his friends.

I would like a mature and mid-low pitched voice for her, as well as someone who can switch between the teasing side and the detective side easily.

Character Description

Kyoko was the one who rescued Takumi while he was stranded in the middle of Akihabara, having lost all his physical features and having become a vaguely human-shaped mass of data. Despite his odd circumstances, she stayed calm and helped him regain his avatar’s data from EDEN– though that, of course, was only a temporary solution. After all, having an avatar is a far cry from having an actual physical body.

Thus, she took Takumi on as her apprentice, asking for his help with cases in return for her to help him find a cure to his EDEN Syndrome. Now, with Takumi’s unique skill set, the two have become a power duo that strikes fear in all cyber-criminals that dare threaten EDEN.

She is horrible at making coffee, her concoctions being notoriously bad and almost killing Takumi and Arata. Does she know how bad they are? No one but her knows…

Voice description:
  • female young adult
  • [Finding the not even human looking pile of data that is Takumi, yet not even fazed.] I’m more used to strange phenomena than most… But I’ve never seen the likes of this before. Can you hear my voice? Are you able to speak? …Ah, that’s good. Frankly, I wasn’t sure what I would have done had you not even been human.

  • [Trying to figure out how to help Takumi. Entertained, slightly aloof.] I’ve had a good look at you, and you truly are a mass of data. A true digital body. Yet you hear my voice, sit on my sofa, talk to me… all proof that you obey physical laws. A digital body with real-life characteristics… Let’s call it a “half-cyber” body, why don’t we? (Giggle)

  • [Serious, talking about the possibility of a war.] …Yes, things might just get out of hand if we keep this up. Think about it– self-defense or not, you destroyed the secret weapon of another country’s military. If this gets out, then we’ll have two huge issues: One. They might come after you, as you knowing their secrets is… very detrimental to them. Two… They might come after Japan as a whole, suspecting us to have stolen the weapon only to destroy it as it began to rebel.

Role Description

Mirei tends to speak in riddles, telling Takumi to “follow his fate,” or that “his fate awaits him.” She’s an enigmatic woman with just as enigmatic a speech pattern, though she also seems to be a big enjoyer of sadistic comedy, though mainly towards people who deserve it.

Considering her nature, I believe that a mid to low voice would be appropriate for her. It’s also important that you can properly convey just how aloof she can be.

Character Description

Mirei was part of Professor Petrov's research team at GIGO Company, but due to a lab accident she lost the data of her natural body and became able to travel to the Digital World. Due to this, she no longer has a real body or even an avatar, and since the life support for her hospital-bound physical body has been discontinued, her digital self is only kept alive by life energy shared by her two partners, Angewomon and Lady Devimon. In order to rectify this, she is searching for the data of her natural body within the Digital World.

Now, she has basically become an omnipotent figure that appears in a multitude of Digimon games, and can travel across universes through the power of her two partners. She is the person who gave Takumi access to the DigiLab, letting him use its facilities in exchange for his help in punishing Hackers that abuse and mistreat their Digimon.

Voice description:

  • [Mysterious, introducing the player to the game and breaking the fourth wall] Welcome… to the DigiLab. This place has a faint connection with the Digital World. It is a door into Cyberspace. The fact that you were brought here means… That you are worthy of accessing the “fate” carved into this place. And so, you have a choice to make. Which of these two fates will you take as your own?

  • [Laughing at the prospect of the abusing hackers getting crushed by Takumi.] I expect you to teach those hackers a lesson. How you choose to deal with them… I shall leave up to you. But I will say, should you decide to dispatch of those who treat their Digimon like naught but tools… I would not shed a single tear for them.

  • [Summoning Mastemon, fusing her two Digimon.] Light and Darkness intertwine, bright and night as one combined. Shatter stars and break the sky, so our universes may collide– Bring us luck and light the night, so with your force we’ll win this fight!

Role Description

Nokia’s partners Agumon and Gabumon are some of the few Digimon in the game that actually frequently talk.

Agumon is a very loud-mouthed Digimon that tends to yell a lot, but as it evolves it takes on a more mature tone as it turns into Wargreymon. Thus, whoever voices Agumon will require the range to voice both evolutions.

Both a feminine and masculine voice might work– whether you’d like to imitate the Japanese Dub, the English Dub, or want to go for your completely own interpretation: All are welcome here!

Character Description

Agumon is a very loud and joyful Digimon with a strong wish to protect Nokia and her friends. From the first time they met, they had a strong bond– and their friendship only grew from there. Throughout the game, Agumon and Nokia will have a lot of banter and comic relief moments, though Agumon and Gabumon’s power will also grow exponentially.

Voice description:

  • [WARGREYMON– Determined.] I won’t give up…! To protect Nokia… to keep our friends and this world safe… And for our karaoke nights! I will fight!

  • [AGUMON– Cheering Nokia up.] Nokia… I’m not really good with words like you are, but I like being with you! It makes me really happy to be your friend, so don’t listen to those meanies! Alright?

Role Description

Nokia’s partners Agumon and Gabumon are some of the few Digimon in the game that actually frequently talk.

Gabumon is a quiet and shy Digimon, contrasting Agumon’s loud, hot-headed demeanor. It generally prefers to stay in the background, though it will never hesitate to stand up if it means protecting those dear to him. As the very embodiment of friendship, it is his sworn duty to protect his friends, after all.

Do note that whoever voices Gabumon will voice the entire evolution line of Gabumon– so Gabumon, Metalgarurumon, and Omnimon.

Both a masculine or a feminine voice work for Gabumon, just go with whatever you think fits! Whether you’d like to imitate the Japanese Dub, the English Dub, or want to go for your completely own interpretation: All are welcome here!

Character Description

As previously mentioned, Gabumon is a comparatively sheltered Digimon when put next to Agumon. His withdrawn demeanor especially shines through during his first meeting with Nokia, when he hides behind Agumon and is the first to dash away when more humans show up.

Gabumon serves as comic relief alongside Agumon and Nokia, but once he evolves to Metalgarurumon, he starts showing his true potential… Though, of course, the trio’s shenanigans will still ensue.

Voice description:

  • [GABUMON– Happy but confused.] You… you smell familiar? It’s almost like we’ve met before…! It’s making me really happy!

  • [GABUMON– Scared.] Ahhh… I’m tired of being chased around all day every day! I’m getting out of here!

  • [METALGARURUMON– Determined.] We won’t back down! Even if this is a fight we can’t hope to win, we’ll keep our heads held high… and protect the friends that we cherish!

Role Description

Matayoshi, being a seasoned detective, has a gruff, low bass that rumbles through everyone he interrogates, shaking the truth out of them. Despite his tough exterior though, he tends to joke around a lot with Takumi and Kyoko– so whoever decides to audition for him needs to be ready to switch between a serious detective and a dad-joke-making uncle.

Character Description

Despite being a minor character, Matayoshi does a lot of important work for the plot in the background. He’s a respected detective with a nigh unequaled amount of experience, and with the help of Kyoko’s knowledge and Takumi’s special skill set, any case becomes easy to crack.

Though he’s a kind soul, he shows no mercy to anyone who dares threaten him nor society.

No, the files we’re looking for are much deeper. Much better hidden. They’re in the Avalon Server– the best protected system in the entire world. Getting through to those ain’t gonna be easy, lemme tell ya…

  • [Casual] Look kid, all I’m saying is that it’d be best if ya kept your eyes open, you know? Nakano ain’t what it used to be. Hackers can’t do much to you in the real world, that much is true… but what about other criminals? Just… be careful, okay?
