Beyond Horizon: The Pilot
Project Overview
INTRODUCTION
Hello, everyone! This casting call is for the pilot episode of an animated science fiction television show. Currently the show is being prepared for Pitch Meetings and being shopped around, and this is why we're here! We're trying something new with this story by creating an audio experience for the pilot episode, so studio executives can opt to listen to the pilot rather than read, should they so choose [Or maybe even follow along]. Think of it like an audio-book experience or a podcast adventure.
All roles will be in the English Language and Voice Actors must be comfortable speaking it. Roles are open to any ethnicity unless specified in the character description.
Compensation: We believe that an artist should be paid for their work. We'll be paying $5-$30 for each character in the project. All payments are made through PayPal.
IMPORTANT AUDITION REMINDER: We don't mind hearing effects for character you feel they fit with, but please also provide a take with your natural voice so we can hear you in all your natural vocal glory.
BEYOND HORIZON OVERVIEW
Beyond Horizon is an exploratory space opera that is human-centric in its approach to story and subject matter. Expansive in scope, we travel across a vast solar system of planets and moons, each with their own culture and rich history. Yet is incredibly grounded, both in performance and visual aesthetic with a sharp focus on our main characters and their very relatable human lives and problems.
On the surface, Beyond Horizon is a story of action and adventure, daring escapades, futuristic vistas, and intriguing characters. The show can stand on this alone, creating an enjoyable experience for the viewer as they journey across planets, time, and space. But Beyond Horizon also offers a deeper look into what it means to be human as our characters explore love and loss, breaking their own cyclical traumas that we as people can too often let hold us back in life.
The diverse characters grapple with the past, contemplate the future, and analyze the present as questions about morality and mortality are woven prominently throughout the multi-season arc. These layered through lines pave the way for what Beyond Horizon is really about: the human condition.
DEADLINES AND AUDITIONS
The deadline for auditions is June 1st. We'll notify voice actors who have been cast in roles by the end of the day June 3rd. The goal then is to have a table read of all the talent to get a feel for characters and lock in the voices before sending off to record.
WHAT WE ASK OF YOU
- First and foremost, have fun! There's a lot of technical and business stuff to this process, but none of it means anything if the people involved aren't passionate about their craft.
- Please submit clean recordings on prosumer (or better!) mics (no air conditioners in the background, no fans, etc).
- Feel free to cut your lines to your best/favorite takes. Three is the gold standard.
- Please submit your recordings as one .wav file to our company email address, which will be provided to you after casting. If a file is too large to submit via email, we prefer to use WeTransfer.
- We do occasionally ask for line re-dos, but we do this sparingly and only after great consideration - we realize your time is valuable, and we won't ask for anything we can't work around in edits.

The Casting Process Has Begun!
I am truly blown away by the response I've had to this casting call. Much more than I was anticipating for such a short turnaround time. With that, I'm still narrowing down the final cast list and should have it finalized by sometime Friday June 3rd. Big shout out to all of you for submitting and lending your vocal talents to bring these characters to life!
Malcolm Marx, early 40s, is your classically handsome quintessential space pirate. More widely known by his pirate name, Marksman Marx, the only thing faster than his gun is his mouth, and he always has a quip on hand and ready to go. Quick to joke and slow to trust, Marx is often loved and hated in equal measure with his sarcastic attitude and devil-may-care demeanor. In fact, the only thing he takes seriously is his life of crime. [Think along the lines of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop meets Mal from Firefly]
(philosophical, contemplative)
Do you ever wonder what’s on the other side?
Listen to me. Get SAM off this planet and never look back.
(Sarcastic, taunting, rebellious)
Then you better keep your hands off the merchandise, Captain. I’m worth more alive.
Kimiko “Kimmi” Hendrix, mid 20s Asian, a too smart for her own good scientist turned Pirate. After inventing the first true AI, S.A.M., and then stealing it…Kimmi has been on the run from the law, becoming a pirate with the notorious Marksman Marx. Her time as a pirate has made her a little rough around the edges, but she still tries to be good...when she's not robbing ships.
(Sarcastic and playful. She's making fun of her friend)
Is the great Marksman Marx challenging me to a duel? I bet I could take you, old timer.
No, the Drive Core! That is explosive, What in the name of Terra are you doing?!
(Frantic, worried because she's helping someone whose dying)
I’ll be right back, okay? I’ll be right back!
Captain Jeanne Truxtun, early to mid 50s, is a career military woman. A life in the military has made her stoic, a trait that helps her maintain her cool in just about any circumstance. She's solution focused, always pushing to keep her team alive and safe.
Lieutenant, make contact with ground control and let them know we’ve reached atmo.
It would be good for you to remember that survival is both a blessing and a curse.
(Resigned. Her last hope is gone)
Our distress beacon was overridden. No one’s coming.
James Prescott, early 30s, is a man who lives his life buttoned up and by the book. He's really smart, as the ship's navigator, and a loyal companion to Captain Truxtun.
They’re using our own safety protocols against us. It’s actually pretty genius.
I’m sorry, Ma’am...I... didn’t know.
(Worried, he's just gotten some real bad news)
What? There must be some misunderstanding!
Russell “Cog” Cogburn, 40s African American, is a scrapper and captain of his ship, SteamPunk. A veteran of the Rim War, Cog was once a promising engineer until he found himself on the losing side. A mistake which took the life of his wife and his platoon. Now a recluse, he operates in the fringes of space. He can be a bit cranky, but carries a heart of gold underneath that tough exterior. [Think Jet from Cowboy Bebop]
You have a big mouth for someone on the wrong end of a gun.
Listen, if you want a ride, you have until I load this ship into my cargo hold.
Earlier you asked my name. Russell Cogburn.
Jacan Tuwile, Age Unknown, is as mysterious as he is deadly, and as deadly as he is ambitious. His demeanor is always ice cold calm, and he's relentless in his quest for ultimate power and will stop at nothing to achieve his nefarious ends. No one knows what his face looks like, and any that did are long dead.
Our stars are aligned, Captain. I’m a Marshal here on council business.
Parasites like you would do well to remember their place.
To know my face is to know death.
Systems Automation Matrix [S.A.M.], is the first true artificial intelligence in the known Universe.
Hello Captain Truxtun. You are being robbed. For our convenience, we have sealed the bridge and cut your communication lines. If everyone would please remain calm, we will be finished shortly. Thank you for your cooperation, and have a nice day.
A young lieutenant aboard Captain Truxtun's ship.
Captain, I’m picking up a large object.
Ma’am. We’ve lost control of the ship.
(Under her breath. Shocked and a little scared)
Mother Terra...
An Operator at the Central Marshal Service Facility.
Central Marshal Service, please confirm identity.
Case confirmed. Status update?
Files encrypted. Case closed.
The head of a nefarious organization and Jacan's boss. She's cold, calculating, and as ruthless as her second in command. [Think Komari Vosa from Bounty Hunter]
If what you say is true, then the time has finally come.
I want the Pilot brought to me. Alive.
No other witnesses.
A crewman aboard Captain Truxtun's ship. He's a well built, stout, man. Perfect for a life in the outer colonies. Hates pirates, and has no time for nonsense.
I'm only going to ask nicely once.
Someone else! Thank Terra!
Are you with the rescue party?
