A Better Tomorrow: Replace Maven as Jarl - A Small Project for Skyrim
Project Overview
A BETTER TOMMORROW: REPLACE MAVEN AS JARL
A SMALL PROJECT FOR SKYRIM
-----------------------------------------------------------
SYNOPSIS
------------------------
A mod project originally made by void30, this mod aims to give the player an alternative option for Riften's Jarl if they're aligned with the Empire in the Civil War questline.
Original mod page
Mod page description:
"As a supporter of the Imperials in the Civil War, or someone who made a peace treaty during Season Unending, did Maven becoming Jarl not sit right with you? Well, this mod aims to fix that by replacing Maven with a new NPC who actually cares about Riften!
In the Bee and Barb, you will find a new NPC who doesn't agree with the way Riften is being run. His name is Horik Strong-Hand, a veteran of the Great War. Talk to him and see that he doesn't seem to like or respect Maven.
In Castle Dour, you get to meet the Empire's ambassador to Skyrim, Ambassador Cromwell. He is in charge of Skyrim's political matters. His loyalty to the Empire is strong however, and he will do what is best for the Empire. Maybe if you can convince him that Maven is corrupt, he can do something about it...
Horik, should he become Jarl, is determined to redeem this fallen city, and has chosen a trusted friend to assist him in Riften's management and an honorable warrior to defend him and his subjects.
This mod is fully voiced using xVASynth. No Jarl functionality should be lost by using this mod, as the new Jarl uses a vanilla voice which should easily hook into quests. xVASynth voiced lines are added for quests uniquely given by the Jarl of Riften, such as The Raid, Supply and Demand and Thaneship."
WHAT IS MY ROLE IN THIS?
----------------------------------
I liked the concept of the mod, but disliked the auto-generated voice acting.
Void gave me permission to revoice his mod, and so I am opening up a small casting call to revoice these three characters.
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THIS?
----------------------------
I am looking for various actors who are willing to bring the cast of this project to life. The cast is wide and varied and will need a strong cast of voice actors to deliver the lines.
I am not super picky about microphone quality but would prefer if the mic is around the range of a Blue Yeti.
INSTRUCTIONS
---------------------
If you are cast for a role, you will receive a script through Gmail or Voice123 DMs with recording instructions, deadline, accent specifications, character bios, and line directions. If you want to discuss alternate communication methods, we can do that through Voice123 DMs.
I expect lines to be sent back for all characters following the correct organization.
It would be best if you were recording through audio recording software like Audacity or Adobe Audition. You should export and submit your audition as a .wav audio file with the settings of 44.1 kHz, 16 bits, and mono recording format. I would also like all lines to be separated.
I will open more roles over time. If you are not cast for a role, don't be discouraged from auditioning for another, as more roles will be posted over time. If you're already cast for a role and want to audition for another one - you can do so.
-
Where will this mod be released?
-------------------------------------------
It will be released on Nexus Mods, specifically the section for Skyrim: Special Edition.
-
When will this mod be released?
------------------------------------------
TBD.
-
What Audience will this mod be for?
------------------------------------------------
A subsection of gamers known as modders. Modders are gamers who partake in enhancing a particular game with new, independent content known as mods. Some games with popular and well-known modding communities are Skyrim, Fallout 4, Sims, and Arma 2 & 3.
-
How will payment be handled?
----------------------------------------
Payments will either be sent on the very day you're cast or after you've sent in your lines - It all depends on you. I would strongly prefer using Paypal as a means of transaction, but if otherwise, we can discuss alternative methods of payment.
-
What is the eligible age for auditioning?
---------------------------------------------------
You *have* to be 18 or older to be eligible for being cast for a role. If you're below that age, you're not eligible.
-
Deadline for Auditioning?
---------------------------------
Early February. However, there is always the possibility for the deadline to be pushed.
Thank you for your time. I hope to work with you!

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION:
- Horik Strong-hand is a retired Nord soldier currently living in Riften.
- Horik Strong-hand is a veteran of The Great War and a native of Skyrim. He lived in Riften for years and has seen the rise of crime within the city. He is accompanied by his old friend, Cassius. He is an alternative option for jarl of Riften if the Empire takes over the city.
- Horik is an honorable individual who respects the law. He has seen firsthand what war can do to someone. He is not a fan of the Civil War, as he believes that it has caused a rift within the Nord communities. Seeing families and friends breaking bonds over politics fills him with dread. What also displeases him is the rampant crime within the city he lives in. Seeing the place he calls home being turned into a safehaven for criminals displeases him greatly. If given the chance to Jarl, he would promise to crack down on the crime in Riften and make it great again.
- He's 45-55 years old.
- Scandanavian accent, Central European, Eastern European accent, or North American accent. No other exceptions.
- He should sound like an honorable leader. A grizzled soldier. The type of person who'd you want to lead your community.

VOICE SIGNATURE 2
[Person asks who you are]
I am Horik Strong-Hand. I'm a veteran of the Great War. Lived here in Riften for a very long time. (Sigh)(contempt in voice) It's really tragic how this city has fallen.
[Person asks where they can find work]
If you want good, honest work, talk to Mjoll.
|
|
If you have a more... (Sigh)(gritting teeth)(Contempt in voice) criminal disposition, there's no shortage of that kind of work here.
[Person asks who's in charge of Riften[
(Hate in voice)(Disappointed tone) If it wasn't clear before, Maven Black-Briar is in charge. Being installed as Jarl of Riften further legitimized her grip over this city.
[Person asks what you think of The Civil War]
(Passionate tone) If you ask me, the whole damn thing is pointless. Nord blood is being spilled across the land just to install one man as High King.
|
|
I fought in the Great War. It pains me to see all these young boys eager to charge into their deaths, against their own brothers.[A month has passed since your last meeting with this individual][The Empire has since taken back Riften, and has installed you as jarl after discovering that their previous choice was "less than adequate" for the role][This person meets you again and asks who's charge of Riften now that the Empire has it under their control again]
That would be me. The Empire has finally seen how corrupt Maven is, and put me in charge. I'm going to help clean up this town, one step at a time.
[Person states they have found a skooma dealer in Riften]
Yes, I'm afraid we're aware of Sarthis' presence in the warehouse.
|
|
Unfortunately, we're certain he has informants within the city guard. Every time we've made a move to arrest him, he's escaped.
|
|
However, if you'd take care of this discreetly, you might be able to surprise him without warning.
[Person declines the assignment][Says it's too dangerous]
(Subtle feeling of disappointment) Hmm. Well, if you change your mind, come see me again.[Person comes to see you again][You have been told of their good deeds in helping the city]
(Smile)(Happy tone) Ah, there you are. I was wondering when you'd visit us again.
|
|
I've been informed by my steward that you've made quite an impression in the Rift; several of our citizens have expressed their admiration.
[Person says, "Regarding what, my lord"]
Much like Mjoll, you've become champion of our hold; helping people with their difficulties and providing assistance for their needs.
|
|
As the Jarl of Riften, I feel it's my duty to honor your selfless behavior by honoring you with the title Thane of Riften.
[Person says they would be honored to accept]
You've already taken all the necessary steps in becoming eligible for the title.
|
|
Therefore all that remains is to bestow it upon you.
[Person says thank you in response]
(Smile)(Happy tone)(Laugh) I should be the one thanking you. You've solved more problems in the short time you've been here than anyone in my court has their entire careers.
|
|
You've been a beacon of hope in these dark times for my people and I will never forget it.
|
|
Therefore, by my authority as Jarl, I pronounce you Thane of Riften and award you all the benefits befitting your station. Congratulations.

FULL PROFILE PIC
[Person asks who you are]
(Friendly tone) The name's Cassius. I'm Horik's friend. I help him in any way I can.
[Person asks how you know Horik]
(Passionate tone)(Grateful) I owe him my life. He saved me from a group of bandits a long time ago.
[Person asks for your thoughts on The Civil War]
I can see why people would rebel. After the war, the Empire struggled to secure the roads from bandits. It felt like we were abandoned.
|
|
However, I believe that in this time of hardship, we should all be united so we can stand strong.[A month has passed since your last meeting with this individual][The Empire has since taken back Riften, and has installed your friend Horik as after discovering that their previous choice was "less than adequate" for the role][You have been personally chosen by Horik to be his steward][The individual comes back to you looking for work]
The jarl has put out a bounty on the dragon that's been terrorizing the countryside. Here, take a look at this decree for details.
[Person come back to you][Says they have defeated the dragon]
(Grateful)(Impressed) Excellent. You've done us a great service. Here is your reward.[Person says they'd like to purchase a house in Riften]
Splendid! There's a house available right now.
[Person says they don't have the money to purchase the house]
Very well, just let me know when you have the necessary funds.

[Person walks up to you][They would like to talk about Maven Black-Briar]
What about her? She is a loyal subject of the Empire, and benefits us greatly.
[Person says, "I wouldn't call her loyal. She is shady and corrupt,"][You don't take those claims lightly, so prod themto give you evidence]
Now that is a very serious allegation. I don't suppose you have evidence of this?
[Person tries to intimidate you][You don't fall for such attempts]
(Intimidating tone)(Stern, but not immediately angry)(Threatening) Are you really trying to intimidate an Imperial Officer? In the middle of the Legion's headquarters in Skyrim? Let's not be hasty.[Person promises they'll come back with evidence of her corruption]
(Scoffs) Well, good luck with that. It has to be damning for us to even consider replacing her.[Person comes back to you to discuss Maven Black-Briar]
(Sighs)(Annoyed) This again?[Person says they have found evidence of her corruption][They then hand you evidence]
Let me see that!
|
|
(Shocked)(Flabbergasted)(Angry) Why, this is outrageous! The Thieves Guild AND the Dark Brotherhood? How could we have allowed this to happen?
[Person says that the Empire can't let Maven stay on throne of Riften]
(Sighs) You're right. (Thinking) We'll put Horik Strong-Hand on the throne instead. He seems like a just and honorable man. Thank you for bringing this up.
