The Walking Dead: Comic Dub [VOLUME 5: The Best Defense]
Project Overview
DEADLINE: OCTOBER 31, 2020.
The Walking Dead: Comic Dub is a three year endeavor to create video versions (fully voice acted with an original soundtrack) of all 193 issues of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead. Every week for four years, one of these issues will be posted on the The Walking Dead: Comic Dub YouTube channel.
(Disclaimer: You must by 18+ to audition. This comic series contains EXTREMELY mature content, including graphic violence, strong language, and sex. Please make sure you're comfortable with all of those things before auditioning.)
(Disclaimer 2: This project is not associated with the TV show at all! All the voice, sound, music and other creative choices are based on the material from the comic books alone. Keep this in mind while auditioning.)
Voice Acting Information
For those who are cast, a set of six scripts (a volume) will be given at the beginning of every month. They are due at the end of that month.
HERE IS A LINK TO THE FIRST VOLUME OF SCRIPTS. This is the typical length of the material given out every month. If this is a schedule you don't think you can keep up with, then this probably isn't the project for you. How many months this goes on for obviously depends on how many volumes your character is in.
New roles will be available to audition for every month, so check in regularly! The length of time required to portray these roles (ranging from a month [one volume] to 32 months [all 32 volumes]) will be listed alongside the character.
The whole goal is to keep the people playing the characters consistent throughout the whole series. If you don't think you can turn in your lines on time every month for the number of months listed, please don't apply. Even if the character you portray isn't in the next volume, you will still have lines for that month. For example, the character of Morgan Jones is in the first volume, but then isn't seen all the way until the 6th. This means while everyone is on the 2nd volume. Morgan will be on the 6th. Then when everyone else moves on to the 3rd volume, Morgan will be on the 10th and so on until his part is complete.
Auditioning
This project is going for a gritty, realistic, authentic feeling. Approach the audition as such (basically, not cartoonish).
(Please make sure your audio is sounding nice and professional. That means having a quality microphone, ABSOLUTELY NO AUDIO PEAKING/CLIPPING, echo, background noise, or lip smacks. Be sure that you're not too close or too far from the microphone and that when you yell, you really give it your all and don't do any of that "whisper yelling". Y'know, the usual.)
As previously stated, you are NOT impersonating the TV actors, but instead basing your performance on the comic book character alone.
You DO NOT have to follow the voice suggestions accompanying characters. Use them as a guide if you want to, but feel free to completely ignore them.
(These audition lines are long! If your audio file size is too large to upload, try exporting it as an MP3. Otherwise, send me a message.)
You are encouraged to audition for as many roles as you can! There are parts that will most likely be played by the same person (like twins), but there are new characters available to try out for every month. So even if you don't get in the first month you try, you can try again for a different role the next month and the next.
Even if you HAVE been cast, you can absolutely audition for more parts in future months (although your voice will have to be significantly different from your "cast" role).
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you have any questions/comments/concerns/suggestions, you are ALWAYS free to message me! I look forward to your auditions.

Brian Blake, better known as Philip Blake or by his epithet "The Governor", is a main character and an antagonist first encountered in Issue 27 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He takes his brother's name after Philip dies, and even adapts his personality through an out of body experience, and never revealed his real name to anyone in Woodbury. Prior to his arrival at Woodbury, Brian Blake was nothing like the villain he would become. He was a meek, insecure, and generally good-natured man. Weak and cowardly, he relied on the protection of his cold younger brother, Phillip. His insecurity took it's toll on him as days grew darker and humanity crumbled, and he ultimately succumbed to carnal instincts. To assure he would never be weak, he assumed his brother's identity as Phillip Blake.
As the Governor, Brian drowned in self induced psychopathy. He became utterly convinced that only the Phillip Blakes of society could make it in the world and that the Brians were destined to die. Against his internal ethics, he forced himself to commit atrocities to harden himself for the new world and repress the man who he once was. His true self emerges occasionally against his will, and he struggles with this severe internal conflict throughout his life as the Governor, rendering him insatiably callous, vengeful, belligerent, and paranoid. His thirst for power and blood to constrict the good within him is the dominant driving force of his character. He also showed intensely sexually perverted behaviour, such as raping Michonne and a sexual attraction to his dead niece. Despite his savage and perverse actions, he was a charismatic and well loved leader among the survivors of Woodbury, and was a skilled manipulator, as he never really cared for any of his people and only used them for his own benefit, even when they were attacking Rick's group at The Prison. However, his selfishness and sole goal of seeking revenge on Rick's group and sacrificing many of his own people ultimately led to his demise at the hands of one of his own people, Lilly Caul, who saw Brian for what he really was: a sadistic monster.

Disclaimer: The Governor is involved in some of the most horrific, despicable, and perverted scenes in the whole comic series. Subject matters include but are not limited to bigotry, torture, rape, incest, pedophilia, and necrophilia.
This right here is one of the most important casting calls this project will ever put out. Genuinely one of the best characters in the entire length of the series, the Governor is a charismatic as he is ruthless, as carefree as he is intense. The delivery of his lines can fluctuate wildly, from insanely creepy (when he's talking to his captive, zombified niece) to charismatic and threatening (while talking to Rick and his group) and empowered (while he's manipulating the masses with his rhetoric skills). Definitely a rich personality to really sink your teeth into as an actor. Tons and tons of speeches and dialogue throughout, so it'll definitely be a challenge to get through all of the dense material.
He COULD have a mid-range to deep voice, COULD have an overtly charismatic voice, and/or COULD have a southern accent, but don't let these limit your vocal choices at all.
"Kindly shut the fuck up, sister. It might be difficult with your two armored escorts but I'm certain we could get a couple bullets in you with no trouble at all. In fact--can we just get something out of the way? Please. I think it'll make things at least a tad less tense. Can we just all come to the understanding that we've got all the guns--and if you struggle or try to leave this room my guards will kill you where you stand? Can you just acknowledge that you realize that? I don't care whether you live or die--don't misunderstand me. I just don't want you to get accidentally shot while I'm trying to talk. I hate getting interrupted."
—Brian Blake talking to Rick, Glenn, and Michonne calmly and charismatically.
"Behave yourself, goddamn it! I'm sorry, honey. What's got you so upset? You haven't tried to attack me in months. Oh. No food, huh? You need to be more careful. If you knock your bucket over it will roll out of your reach. I raised you better than this. See, you knocked your bucket over and now your food has spoiled. That's what you get. Even fresh, I don't see how you eat that stuff, really. I tried it--it's horrible. May taste different raw. But I'm not going to try it raw. I'd get you some more food, honey... but Daddy's tired. So you'll just have to wait until I wake up."
—Brian Blake talking to his captive, zombified niece.
"I knew none of you would want to see this, and I apologize for shocking you. I just want to make you all completely aware of the kind of people we're dealing with... Monsters! These savages know where we live! They know what we have! They know our strengths and they know our weaknesses! I say we strike at them before they have a chance to come at us! I refuse to stand down and allow them to destroy us--not after everything we've lost--not after everything we've sacrificed! We've worked too hard to build what we have here--and I'll be goddamned if I'm going to let anyone take it away from me! When it begins, when the killing starts, don't let their appearance deceive you. You will see women--children even, but I assure you these people are beasts, no different than the biters we kill without a second thought. Life out here--it's changed them, twisted them into creatures who kill without a second thought--with no regard for human life. They don't deserve to live. Kill them all!"
—Brian Blake, manipulating and riling up the people of Woodbury with a loud and extremely impassioned speech.
Age: Late Teens
Julie is a character first encountered in Issue 7 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. She is Tyreese's daughter and Chris' girlfriend. Julie also acts as the group's babysitter, and eventually, plans a suicide pact with Chris.
The end of the world hadn't stopped her from seeking independence where she could find it. Once settled after having sexual intercourse for the first time with Chris, she carried out an ill-fated suicide pact with her boyfriend (mostly pressured by him). Chris pulled the trigger on his weapon too quickly, killing Julie before she shot at Chris.

She COULD have a high to mid-range voice and/or COULD have a little bit of a naive voice, but don't let this limit your vocal choices at all.
"Dad. Mister Grimes never took our guns back after target practice. I don't want you to get mad at us for still having them later... so we're giving them back to you."
—Julie to her father, Tyreese.
"I know... I just don't want to do it until the time is right. We have to wait."
—Julie showing hesitancy in her plans to commit suicide with Chris.
"Yeah--I think I'm ready. Let's do it."
—Julie before committing suicide with Chris.
Age: Early 30s
Caesar Ramón Martínez, more generally addressed as Martínez, is a character and an antagonist first encountered in Issue 27 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is a fence guard in Woodbury and one of The Governor's most trusted allies. Martinez helps Rick, Glenn, Michonne, Dr. Stevens, and Alice escape Woodbury. He served as an antagonist for Volume 5: The Best Defense and as the secondary antagonist of Volume 6: This Sorrowful Life.
Martínez appeared to Rick and others he as though he was on their side, and assisted them in escaping Woodbury, as ordered by The Governor to show him where the Prison was located. Rick was suspicious of him throughout the journey back, but, he began to trust Martínez. Throughout their journey to the prison, Rick is the most distant from Martínez until their arrival, finding the prison overrun. After the onslaught and aftermath, the survivors introduce the new people to one another. Rick wanted to introduce Martínez to Carl only to realize he had escaped. Coming to terms with his suspicions, Rick leaves once again to pursue Martínez in the RV. He catches up to the running man and disables him with the speeding vehicle before having one final confrontation. Martínez reveals he had been more interested in leading his fellow citizens to the prison for a safer life rather than follow The Governor's initial orders, though Rick does not care to hear it anymore after everything he and his people went through. His final acknowledgment upon his death at the hands of Rick is that Rick is just as twisted as The Governor himself.

It is very important that this character appears genuinely friendly and very much on Rick's side. There can't be anything in the delivery of his lines that gives away his true intentions (except for the last audition line).
He has a general American accent. He COULD have a deep to mid-range voice, but don't let this limit your vocal choices at all.
"Phillip--the Governor, whatever. He's been slowly going over the edge for a while. I've been hearing about the shit he's been doing, whispers, rumors... didn't want to believe it was true. You kinda choose to ignore that stuff--keeps you from having to do anything. After seeing you--I suspected the "accident" that took your hand was related to him. He asked me to fill in for his guards--watch the garage he was keeping Glenn in. I didn't know he was keeping prisoners in here. I mostly work security--all my time was spent on the fences. I couldn't let it go on--I had to help put a stop to this madness. We're still human, goddamn it."
—Martinez to Rick on why he's helping Rick escape Woodbury.
"So... gym teacher--turned out to be not so "cool" in the end. Was a time... in the beginning--I thought I was best suited for what was happening--out of anyone. I thought I'd handle it the best. It was early on--when I thought this whole thing was going to be temporary. Can't believe I ever thought that, now. Only person I thought I'd have to look after was myself. I saw people losing their minds over watching their loved ones die--not me, I thought. I can't close my eyes without seeing those kids crying out for their moms as their guts spilled out on the floor.. knowing I couldn't do anything but run."
—Martinez to Rick, somberly recounting his experiences of the apocalypse.
"You selfish piece of shit. You've got the--room--the supplies for everyone in Woodbury--the whole damn town! Everyone. Fencing off the streets--protecting the town--it doesn't work that well. Biters--they always break through--we're constantly repairing fences. The prison is secure. My people deserve to be safe, too. The Governor is--what he is. He sent me--but I'm not bringing him here. The others--women--children--not bad--good people. We'd be getting away from him, too. They wouldn't hurt you--your family would be fine."
—A struggling Martinez to Rick, shortly before being killed by the latter (Note: this takes place after Martinez's true intentions are revealed).
Age: Mid to Late 30s
Bruce Allan Cooper is a character and an antagonist first encountered in Issue 27 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is a resident of Woodbury and is one of The Governor's right-hand men and most trusted allies. He served as the secondary antagonist of Volume 7: The Calm Before. "Governor!! You in there?! Yo--Phil!! Open up! The crazy bitch is gone, man! The doctor and Alice--and the other two as well! What happened to your door? Say something, sir! We're coming in!"
—Bruce Allan Cooper to the Governor behind a door which, unbeknownst to Bruce, is boarded up.
"Bob! Get up--we need your help! Upstairs! Now! You were an army medic right?! The Governor's been taking care of you--making sure you're fed, that you don't drink yourself to death--and now you're going to return the favor. The Doc and Alice are gone! If you don't do anything he's going to fucking die! Do you want him to die?! Then fucking do something!"
—Bruce Allan Cooper convincing Bob Stookey, the town drunk, to get ahold of himself.
"Not one more fucking step! What'd you do? We saw the explosion--that was you, wasn't it? You blew up the depot, didn't you? Did you really think I wouldn't recognize you from before, you sniveling little coward? You should never have come back here."
—Bruce Allan Cooper to Glenn while holding Glenn at gunpoint.
Age: Late 30s
Gabriel Harris, better known as "Gabe", is a character and an antagonist first encountered in Issue 27 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is a resident of Woodbury and one of The Governor's most trusted allies. He served as an antagonist for Volume 5: The Best Defense and Volume 6: This Sorrowful Life and as the secondary antagonist of Volume 8: Made To Suffer. Gabe, like Bruce Cooper, was very loyal to The Governor. He was one of his right-hand men, and one of his closest friends, although it was shown that The Governor didn't respect Gabe as much as Bruce Cooper.

"What? You ain't never moved before? You got a new home now. This is your home. Heh--at least for a little while. Speaking of moving... you're getting a new room. Come with me. You deaf now, too, you coward? Didn't you hear the good news? Get up! I said get up! Fine, asshole. Have it your way."
—Gabe trying to intimidate his prisoner, Glenn, to get up/respond.
"Almost a week. You were awake a bit here and there--but I don't think you'll remember anything. Doc's dead. They found his body when they went looking for that bitch and her friends. Didn't find them--but his body was right on the other side of our fence. He didn't last long."
—Gabe's response to the Governor asking how long he was passed out.
"Y-y--you're surrounded, bitch! You know that if you do kill him--you're going down next. You got a death wish, lady?! Fine! I'll grant that wish!"
—Gabe, slightly nervous, when Michonne has The Governor held at gunpoint.
Age: Late 40s
Dr. Stevens (first name unknown) is a character first encountered in Issue 28 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is the head doctor and a resident of Woodbury. Stevens and his young assistant, Alice, treated all of the citizens of the town who were sick or injured, as well as those who participated in the arena duels despite his many protests. He COULD have a mid-range voice and/or COULD have an older, slightly more "intelligent" voice, but don't let these limit your vocal choices at all.
"What the hell is going on that you have to drag me here this late? You better be dying or-- Jesus! What happened to your ear? Who is this man? I've never seen him before. Is this another victim of your goddamn arena fights? He's lost a lot of blood. I can close his wound pretty easily but I'm going to have to go into the blood reserves to keep him alive. Can you send someone to get Alice? I'm going to need some help with this."
—Stevens to the Governor as the Governor brings him an injured Rick.
"Philip. His name is Philip. He was a good man. Emphasis on was. Started out, he was tough but he got the job done. Philip emerged as the leader of the group very quickly. He did what had to be done to keep people safe. After a while, it was clear to some of us that he was doing this more out of enjoyment than the need to protect us. It was clear he was little more than an evil bastard. I can't even talk about his poor daughter. What do you think he'd do to anyone who opposed him? I hate the son of a bitch but I can't do anything. Whatever else he does... he keeps these people safe. That's enough for most people. As long as there's a wall between them and the biters they're not too concerned with who's with them on their side of the wall."
—Stevens to Rick about the Governor.
"I'm not dying... think of it... scientifically... I'm just... evolving... into a different--worse life form. I'll still exist... in some way. Take the supplies... you'll need them to take care of these people. Use what I taught you. Go."
—Stevens to Alice, struggling after being bitten.
Age: Early to Mid 20s
Alice Warren is a character first encountered in Issue 29 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. She is a resident and a nurse of Woodbury. Alice is very useful when it comes to needing medical assistance, as she learned all of her medical skills from Stevens. She later joins the prison survivors, and proves essential to the group during Lori's birth by helping to deliver her baby.

"Me? I'll be--fine. I'll be fine. Doctor Stevens was there, he was just--it's like--one minute he's right there with me and the next--he's gone. That's not a feeling I'm unfamiliar with--but it is a feeling I don't think I'll ever get used to. It's unsettling--hard to shake the feeling of... helplessness."
—Alice to Rick when asked if she's okay after Dr. Stevens' death.
"You know what bugs me, Rick? Nobody is out here asking "Why?" anymore. And if they are--they're not doing anything to find out. Maybe you think the problem is beyond us, but I, for one, would like to at least attempt to find out the cause of all this insanity. And the only way to do that is to study them--while they're still alive or whatever it is they are. And I can do that safely without anyone getting hurt. I'm a smart girl, Rick. I can do this. Think about the possibilities. What if I discover an easier way of killing them? Something that doesn't involve bullets--or anything else we could run out of. What if I find a cure? Or at least something to save us... So that we won't turn into these things when we die. This is worth whatever risks there are--and I'm telling you, the risks are small. Damn it, just--just let me do this."
—Alice talking to Rick.
"Jesus Christ! Someone get Rick inside to the infirmary... and someone else help me get Andrea inside--Shit! I'm going to need some help in there--there's just too much to do. But I don't want anyone in the way... We get them inside and then nobody leaves, okay? There's an operating room in the back--put Rick on that bed--hurry! Someone needs to find Lori, tell her what's going on. I didn't see her or Patricia or any of the children inside before the shooting stopped--so I don't know where they are."
—Alice quickly yelling instructions to the group after a shoot-out.
Age: 49

What about you, fella? You gonna come to the fight? It's a rematch--I guess the Gov's having a hard time finding people willing to fight--but it should still be a good one. You guys don't know what you're missing. We're going to be putting on a hell of a show tonight."
—Harold to Rick and Dr. Stevens, encouraging them to attend his next fight.
"Whoa, Eugene. What's the big deal? You're getting a rematch! What's your beef?!"
—Harold to a furious Eugene.

After her death and Brian's takeover of Woodbury, she is kept on a leash in his apartment where he feeds her the bodies of his victims. Brian takes great care of Penny, showing her affection as if she is alive and reprimands her when she gets angry, although he feels bad when doing so. It also seems that during this time he developed a disturbing sexual attraction to her as evidenced when he pulled her teeth out with pliers and deeply kissed her. This role is unique in that it isn't just a generic zombie, but rather a specific one that acts as a reoccurring character.
She should have a higher-pitched voice (like a seven-year-old girl), but now only making the disgusting, guttural sounds that zombies are inclined to make.
"Uungh. Guk. Glakk. Gar. Uhh! Uhh! Uhh! Ruh! Uhh. Gak. Ruh? Guh. ≡CHOMP≡ ≡SLURP≡ Uh. Ugh. Grr. Rrgh! Ruugh!! Whugh! Garr! Roagh. Augh. Gruh. Hmgh! Wuagg!"

Zombies, mostly referred to in-universe as walkers, monsters, roamers, geeks, lurkers, biters, muertos, infected and empties, are an antagonistic force that serve as the primary catalyst for the events within The Walking Dead universe. They serve as universal antagonists.
Reanimated human beings, while not immortal, will not "die" under typical conditions that would ordinarily cause the death of a living person. They do not appear to feel or respond to pain, can survive even the most brutal injuries, and despite their bottomless appetite for flesh, they do not need food, water, or sleep to survive.
They show no other bodily function that relates to a human, showing no signs of self-healing or response to extreme temperatures. The brain maintains limited abilities of the body, allowing for movement of the limbs (provided that they are not decomposed to the point where the bones are not strong enough to bend without breaking), jaws, neck, and even the use of its sensory systems. While the walkers are notoriously weaker than humans, the only way to kill one is to destroy the brain. Despite severely weakened frames, they will continue to hunt for living animals to consume. Even when decapitated, the head will remain active, even though it would be practically harmless at such point.

Time Commitment: 2 Years, 4 Months (28 Volumes)
That time commitment figure is actually just the maximum amount of time you might be working. Zombies are played by multiple people (any gender) and a new person to play zombies is cast every month. Essentially, you can stay with the project for a long or little as you like.
Every month, one more person will be cast and added to the group of zombie voice actors, so if you audition for zombies previously and weren't cast, be sure to re-record/resubmit your audition this month (to show that you're still interested and active.)
Zombies have sound written out in text form pretty specifically in the comics. Your job is to match the essence of what those words are trying to convey as exact as you can, while still sounding like a roaming, compulsion-driven zombie.
Not all the sounds are coming from the same zombie. The zombies' voices COULD vary in pitch and maybe in texture. Have fun with this one and try different things!
"Uungh. Guk. Glakk. Gar. Uhh! Uhh! Uhh! Ruh! Uhh. Gak. Ruh? Guh. ≡CHOMP≡ ≡SLURP≡ Uh. Ugh. Grr. Rrgh! Ruugh!! Whugh! Garr! Roagh. Augh. Gruh. Hmgh! Wuagg!"

(dying to axes, gunshots, neck cut open, stabbed, slow deaths, long deaths, etc.)
