Caesar Ramón Martínez, more generally addressed as Martínez, is a character and an antagonist first encountered in Issue 27 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is a fence guard in Woodbury and one of The Governor's most trusted allies. Martinez helps Rick, Glenn, Michonne, Dr. Stevens, and Alice escape Woodbury. He served as an antagonist for Volume 5: The Best Defense and as the secondary antagonist of Volume 6: This Sorrowful Life.

Martínez appeared to Rick and others he as though he was on their side, and assisted them in escaping Woodbury, as ordered by The Governor to show him where the Prison was located. Rick was suspicious of him throughout the journey back, but, he began to trust Martínez. Throughout their journey to the prison, Rick is the most distant from Martínez until their arrival, finding the prison overrun. After the onslaught and aftermath, the survivors introduce the new people to one another. Rick wanted to introduce Martínez to Carl only to realize he had escaped. Coming to terms with his suspicions, Rick leaves once again to pursue Martínez in the RV. He catches up to the running man and disables him with the speeding vehicle before having one final confrontation. Martínez reveals he had been more interested in leading his fellow citizens to the prison for a safer life rather than follow The Governor's initial orders, though Rick does not care to hear it anymore after everything he and his people went through. His final acknowledgment upon his death at the hands of Rick is that Rick is just as twisted as The Governor himself.

Time Commitment: 3 Months (3 Volumes)

It is very important that this character appears genuinely friendly and very much on Rick's side. There can't be anything in the delivery of his lines that gives away his true intentions (except for the last audition line).

He has a general American accent. He COULD have a deep to mid-range voice, but don't let this limit your vocal choices at all.

  • "Phillip--the Governor, whatever. He's been slowly going over the edge for a while. I've been hearing about the shit he's been doing, whispers, rumors... didn't want to believe it was true. You kinda choose to ignore that stuff--keeps you from having to do anything. After seeing you--I suspected the "accident" that took your hand was related to him. He asked me to fill in for his guards--watch the garage he was keeping Glenn in. I didn't know he was keeping prisoners in here. I mostly work security--all my time was spent on the fences. I couldn't let it go on--I had to help put a stop to this madness. We're still human, goddamn it."

—Martinez to Rick on why he's helping Rick escape Woodbury.

  • "So... gym teacher--turned out to be not so "cool" in the end. Was a time... in the beginning--I thought I was best suited for what was happening--out of anyone. I thought I'd handle it the best. It was early on--when I thought this whole thing was going to be temporary. Can't believe I ever thought that, now. Only person I thought I'd have to look after was myself. I saw people losing their minds over watching their loved ones die--not me, I thought. I can't close my eyes without seeing those kids crying out for their moms as their guts spilled out on the floor.. knowing I couldn't do anything but run."

—Martinez to Rick, somberly recounting his experiences of the apocalypse.

  • "You selfish piece of shit. You've got the--room--the supplies for everyone in Woodbury--the whole damn town! Everyone. Fencing off the streets--protecting the town--it doesn't work that well. Biters--they always break through--we're constantly repairing fences. The prison is secure. My people deserve to be safe, too. The Governor is--what he is. He sent me--but I'm not bringing him here. The others--women--children--not bad--good people. We'd be getting away from him, too. They wouldn't hurt you--your family would be fine."

—A struggling Martinez to Rick, shortly before being killed by the latter (Note: this takes place after Martinez's true intentions are revealed).
