Project Overview
This is a recast for a role in multiple low-budget indie animatic/motion comic shorts (<2-3 min) at $2 per line. As a main character, this casting is ideally a returning, long-term relationship with more potential voice work opportunities down the line, since the project is ongoing and continues to grow. If you're looking for just a quick one-off read, this may not be the audition for you, but if you'd like to be part of a recurring roster with a diverse cast of amazing voice actors from all over the world, definitely join in!

REEDS is an LGBTQ+ adventure series, available as a webcomic on the WEBTOON and Tapas platforms. The story is a Hmong-inspired fantasy about powerful warriors challenging heaven and earth in their pursuit for divine power.
REEDS launched in 2020 and is now branching out into a multi-media IP with animated video projects. All projects are completely self-produced (except for BGM and VO recording) and on a single person's indie budget.
Submitting your audition means acknowledging that you will be part of an LGBTQ+ production.
Yeah, I know, weird to make this a bolded point, but I've had people back out because they didn't realize this is a queer work, so I'm letting you know now lol.
You will be playing as a gay character. This means you'd be reading romantic lines from a male character, towards/about another male character.
This is a PG-13 production. You will never be asked to perform explicit/NSFW audio. Explicit story beats are always fade-to-black/censored and adhere to content guidelines for the majority of online platforms. Do note that this character has visually been a part of suggestive and sexual situations in both canon and fanart. If you're ever uncomfortable performing a line for any reason, I'm always happy to change the script!
Auditions for REEDS are open to people of all identities and backgrounds:
Shu is a gay male character, but you do not have to be a gay man to portray him.
While all the characters in REEDS are Hmong, you do not have to be Hmong or Asian to audition.
Actor must be over 18 and able to receive payments via PayPal.
People who have auditioned for Shu previously are welcome and encouraged to participate in this new audition. Additionally, current REEDS VAs for other characters can also audition.

Shu, Fourth Prince of the Blossom Empire
Wilting in the shadows of his renowned older brothers, Shu has earned the moniker of "Slacker Prince" for his lack of accomplishments and zero ambition. Awkward, incompetent, and a little high-maintenance, Shu's only redeeming traits are his royal lineage and a talent for singing.
The story begins with Shu dragged far from home as a war prisoner. He is rescued by a wandering musician named Keng, whom he's instantly drawn to. Unfamiliar with the world beyond the palace walls, Shu asks Keng to help escort him back home. They fall in love during their journey, but this bliss is torn apart by a shocking secret history between their families.
The pair are forcibly separated - Shu must mature and learn to fend for himself as he desperately seeks to reunite with his soulmate.
ACCENT: General American (no strong regional accents)
ARCHETYPE: youthful protagonist, reluctant hero, prince, sunshine boy, age 19-20
- Shu's arc is about the struggle of maturing into your responsibilities while also following your heart.
- He starts off weak, and levels up throughout the series.
- He becomes more determined to improve himself thanks to being inspired by love.

Doesn't like being a prince. Just wants to be stress-free and have fun all the time. - A smile that lights up the world. Keng falls for his sincerity and kindness.
- Gives passionate motivational speeches, is the one who cheers others up and boosts morale.
PERSONALITY: dorky, inexperienced, self-deprecating, romantic, playful
- When he's happy, he beams like sunshine. When he's sad, it's like the world is ending.

Clingy and unknowingly desperate for affection. However, he is NOT overtly sexual. - A wimp who's easy to bully. Whines often. Dependent on others.
- Tends to be impulsive and not think things through before acting or speaking.
- Gets flustered easily, and is VERY comedically animated when shocked or embarrassed.
- A hopeless romantic driven by love, sometimes beyond reason.

Shu is a singer and sings in canon, but you do not have to be able to sing to portray him. The priority is characterization. If needed, a separate singer will be hired to cover singing.
You're welcome to view previous videos featuring Shu to get a better idea of what he's like, but don't feel obligated to match previous performances 1:1.
Note: Shu's name is pronounced like "shoe".

- Read #2 - (Shu in a private confrontation with his father, heartbroken to learn that his family is the cause of his beloved's suffering.)
