FLCL: Progressive - Fandub

FLCL: Progressive - Fandub

Project Overview

Hey there, this is a casting call for a fandub of the anime FLCL: Progressive!

━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━

Obviously, there will be minor spoilers within the descriptions of the characters, so if you have not watched FLCL: Progressive, just keep that in mind. It's not required that you watch it before auditioning, but I highly recommend it. In my opinion, it's a wonderful work, and only six episodes. In consequence, we will be dubbing all six of those episodes, so you are guaranteed to have a lot of lines, keep that in mind when auditioning. I'm not necessarily looking for voices that are close to the original, I'm looking for those that can embody the character in full.

━━━━━━━━━▼━━━━━━━━━

I'd also appreciate if you would join the discord server to get updates on this project or just to hang out in a fun community with lots of cool people!

━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━

Have fun auditioning!

Hidomi Hibajiri

Unpaid
Role assigned to: sleepy

The main protagonist of FLCL: Progressive. Hidomi is antisocial and tends to ignore reality and the events around her. She is nihilistic and gloomy, often having morbid dreams of a desolate world where she is hurt in some way. She softens around Ko Ide and she carries a mutual crush on him. Haruko and Hinae describe her as a “tsundere” character. She apparently has a strong will, since she is not affected by Haruko's mind control attempt. At the end of the story, she does soften, as shown when she makes up with her mother and begins a relationship with Ide.

Being the silent type character she is, Hidomi doesn't have as many lines as a normal protagonist would. She has a quiet yet decisive voice.

  • (Expressionless, yet despairing) "The world's destroyed before it becomes beautiful. This is the world I envisioned. This is how the world should have been."

  • (Uncharacteristically perky) "Good morning! Here's Hidomi! I'm Hidomi! Hidomi, that is!"

  • (Expressionless) "There's nothing I want to be. There's nothing I want to do."

(Upset, Worried) "Hey, that's mine! Give it back!"

Role assigned to: krimes

The other protagonist of FLCL: Progressive. Ide is very tough and a hard worker as a result of his home life. This may or may not contribute to him being the only student in his class to wear a plain Japanese school uniform and sport a buzz-cut. At school, he finds himself trying to woo his teacher with art gallery tickets, and explains the plan to his friends with an air of highbrow suggesting a superior knowledge of women. He is entirely oblivious to the fact that this teacher is actually Haruko using intimacy to activate a N.O. channel in him, however, showing his naivety.

Ide must have a ridiculously expressive voice, keep that in mind when auditioning. Additionally, throughout the series, he tends to frequently scream in terror.

  • (Giddy, Suggestive) "Huh? Yesterday, you ask? Well, I'll leave that to your imagination."

(Confident, speaking fast) "It's not about my character...Looking at art and thinking about the world we live in. The universe? Scrutinize it? Peek in from a gap? I'm interested in the philosophical."

(Screaming comically) "Ah, what are you saying!? Don't be stupid! You're so dumb!"

  • (Exhausted) "Well, a lot of things happened. A lot of things."

  • (Panicked) "Miss Hibajiri! Wh-Wha?"

(Being launched into the air) "WAHHHH!"

Haruha Raharu

Role assigned to: daniellemcknight

Haruha Raharu, also known as Haruko, has a tendency to switch between a variety of different dispositions to others on a dime, making her difficult to read and unpredictable. She can be very persuasive and stand-offish sometimes to get what she wants. She can also act like a mom, a lover or a maid depending upon her mood. While split from Julia Jinyu, Haruko acts a little different. She's a lot less manipulative and far more aggressive with her approach. She is very playful and selfish, intent on getting what she wants by any means without reason.

If you've heard Haruko's voice, it's usually very midtone and nasally, however, she starts off disguised as a fast-speaking blonde schoolteacher.

  • (Disguised as teacher; speaking very fast) "I gave so, so much, but there was little output. I have no use for a piece-of-scum bug...I don't want all of you to be that non-existent youth."

(Still as teacher, slowly going insane) "I want all of you to become adults of cosmological scale! You don't need to go venture out into the universe. Who would ride a four-wheeled car with wings?"

  • (Grand) "Laser beam!"

(Determined) "There it is! Make it in time!"

(Irritated) "In movies, you're supposed to barely make it in time!"

  • (Serious, Sentimental) "Hey! Better not run away. You became mine! Didn't you, Atomsk?"

Julia Jinyu

Role assigned to: marsyourva

Jinyu is akin to a more mature and serious version of Haruko. She is genuinely kind and supportive, exemplified by her behavior around Hidomi. She is Haruko’s responsible side and most likely carries Haruko’s suppressed emotions, such as a hidden love for Atomsk. She is concerned for the feelings of others and wants to do what is right, exemplified by her desire to keep Atomsk free, persuading Haruko to join her instead of selfishly pursuing Atomsk's power and warning Hidomi to watch out for Haruko.

Jinyu's tone should sound relatively mature.

  • (Calm) "That was a close one, ma'am. She was about to overflow."

(Disappointed muttering) "Strange. I thought it was a fatal hit."

(Comically serious) "Unfortunately, ma'am, your daughter is completely fine."

  • (Serious) "Pretending not to hear. That's your thing, right? When you're paused like that, your body will just rot away. Is that what you want to become?"

(Urgent) "Hey! Where's the one who pulled that out of you? Answer me! You were hit. By the woman on a Vespa!"

  • (Determined) "Will you repeat your mistake? There's no light at the end of this tunnel. Give it up."

Role assigned to: Cap_VA

Marco is normally quiet and tame. He develops a brief crush on Hidomi when her headphones cause a personality change, finding her new cheerful personality cute and considers buying a gift for her, which leads him to get a job at the amusement park. He does not hesitate to step in to protect Hidomi when she was being observed by a stranger. He has also been a good listener for Mori and believes his claims about fashion trends.

  • (Casual) "Oh yeah. What was the 'secret plan' you mentioned yesterday?"

(Awed) "You seem to have a different persona, Ide." (Pronounced 'EE-day')

  • (Surprised) "Miss Hibajiri! What are you doing?"

(Deep in thought) "The musical score of the stars..."

Goro Mori

Role assigned to: kylefalatko

Goro is very outlandish and wacky: he lies to his friends that he has a girlfriend; he believes in a unisex fashion trend and prefers to wear a skirt, which displeases Ide, along with colorful clothing, giving him a hippie-like appearance. However, he is stubborn in his beliefs and refuses to change. He is in love with Aiko to the point of hiring her as his pretend girlfriend, showing that he lacks confidence. He's also very jealous of Ide when it comes to women.

Mori has a comedic and expressive voice.

  • (Suspicious) "So, what happened to you yesterday, Ide? (Pronounced 'EE-day')

  • (Irritated) "For reals? Seriously?"

    (In disbelief) "Ide...Ide...Why you, Ide...?"

  • (Flaunting) "Comrades! This is my girlfriend, Aiko!"

(Ashamed) "Stop crying. You're making me feel more pathetic."

Aiko

Role assigned to: Angelique Kimble

When playing the part Mori's girlfriend, Aiko pretends to be a shy, easily embarrassed, and emotionally dependent young girl to suit Mori's prior lies. Afterwards, she becomes all business and cold to Mori as he pays her. She also gives a 'gift' to her clients so her friends and classmates won't suspect she has stooped so low as to sell herself as a girlfriend. The items sold come from her home and she is fluent in lying to her father about not knowing where the various things disappear to.

She puts on a shy, high-pitched voice while acting, but normally she's blunt and straightforward.

  • (Shy) "Um, I'm Aiko. I'm dating your friend Mori...I'm so embarrassed!"

  • (Curt) "So, did I play the character like you wanted?"

(Rudely teasing) "You boys think it's cute when girls play shy and timid, right?"

  • (Uninterested) "The amusement park got a new ride, but it was just a lame Viking."

Hinae Hibajiri

Unpaid
Role assigned to: Brittanie Arwen

Hinae is a very cheerful and bubbly person, both inside and out, a stark contrast to her daughter. She even holds this demeanor when talking about Hidomi's father or using a knife to get a simple morning greeting out of her. She's not one to hold a grudge, forgiving Jinyu overnight for hitting Hidomi with a car and hiring her to make up for it. When teaching Jinyu how to prepare meals, she puts a big emphasis on a positive customer experience and doesn't fault her for making a mess during the learning process.

Hinae's tone is usually peppy and very expressive.

  • (Disappointed but keeping a cheerful tone) "Your tsundere persona is getting polished every day, Hidomi. I understand there are customers who come for that, but I'm your mom after all."

  • (Worried, concerned) "Hidomi!"

    (Confused) "Overflow?"

  • (Serious) "I've been thinking lately...Maybe it's time we stop waiting for him in this city."

Role assigned to: FischTrevor

Masurao, together with Eye Patch and Tonkichi, works at the Bureau from his house in a collaborative effort to fight Medical Mechanica. He has a daughter, Aiko, whom he keeps his activities secret from by pretending to be a boxer. He is a fairly business-focused person who rarely expresses extreme emotions. He tends to disagree a lot with Eye Patch and finds Tonkichi's undercover persona annoying. His interactions with Aiko at their home are minimal, usually consisting of asking where the most recent object she traded disappeared to.

  • (Casual) "Is my avocado parfait ready yet?"

  • (Talking back) "I looked everywhere! But it's nowhere to be found!"

(Inquiring) "Oh, have you seen the carved bear that was here?"

  • (Explaining) "Yeah. We want to reverse the current of N.O. If we hypothesize it's a power that can pull objects from somewhere..."

Eye Patch

Role assigned to: DanteGraves

Eye Patch is a highly energetic old man who is homeless and obsessed with boxing. He references and makes puns to it in almost every single one of his statements. He has a high sense of belief in the youth that they can "become pros". He thinks he can find that potential on the streets, but never does. Additionally, he is good friends with Masurao. Together, they work at restoring Canti and occasionally check in on Tonkichi's work via video call.

Eye Patch has the tone of a wise old man with a deep, gruff voice.

  • (Inquiring) "Princess, may I have a napkin?"

(Admiring) "You're on fire, princess. You have what it takes to be a champ..."

  • (Calm, but in disbelief) "How do you lose a big thing like a flower pot?"

(Realizing) "I see. So we should be able to reverse the direction."

  • (Pretending to be senile) "Ohhh! You're a phenomenon! You have a fine fist...Do you want to take the world with me?"

Tonkichi

Role assigned to: Cryshulvo

Tonkichi's personality is almost entirely represented by the Mr. Dodo persona. He can be shown to be serious when focused on work for the Bureau, but large portions of his job are entertaining young guests while waiting for the various park rides to be assembled. He frequently squawks and jumps around rapidly as part of this persona, which puts many guests at unease. Children sometimes call for Mr. Dodo and Tonkichi is happy to oblige them regardless of the opinions of his Bureau coworkers.

Tonkichi has an eccentric, high-pitched voice.

  • (Polite) "Miss Hidomi, I'd like more coffee please."

(Pleased) "I love it when she looks down at us with those eyes."

  • (Relieved) "Oh, I'm glad you made it."

(Invested) "Oh, this is the new main attraction!"
