Berserk the Audio Manga, Episode 0: The Prototype
Project Overview
Berserk is a dark fantasy manga, written by Kentaro Miura. Following the Black Swordsman Guts, a man with a cursed fate, the story explores the depths of camaraderie and betrayal, and contemplates whether or not a man truly has any control over his destiny. Over the course of almost 30 years, over 300 chapters have been released, with the end still not in sight. This project seeks to adapt the entirety of Berserk, taking the incredible artwork from the manga and adding music, sound effects, and of course, voice acting.
In this, the pilot episode, Episode 0, the wandering swordsman Guts and his elven companion Puck come across a young girl, Frikka, as her carriage is attacked by bandits. Saving Frikka and returning her to her village, Guts discovers she was meant to be a sacrifice to the evil Vlad Tepes, the fief lord of the land. Initially unwilling to lend a hand, Guts discovers that Vlad Tepes has ties to the ominous Vuana, whom Guts holds a personal grudge against. Fueled by rage and hatred, Guts leaps into action, his ferocious attack transforming him into a monster that rivals that of the inhumans.
While I do consider this a passion project, it is something I ask that everyone put their best effort into. I want this to be the highest quality I can make it, and to do that, I need my cast to have good recording equipment and the discipline to get their lines in on time. With that said, any and all are welcome, and I look forward to hearing your auditions!

A petty bandit who seeks to loot and pillage Frikka's carriage, before running afoul of Guts
(Spurring horse) "Hahh! Hahh!"
(Threatening) "You don’t wanna be cut in half, do ya?! Then you’ll get skewered!! Like them up on that hill!!"
(Comically, realizing there's an arrow in his head, dying) "Aie? Owww... Arrow? Roh? Ohhh..."
These are two similar roles tied in one. Frikka is a young girl who is saved by Guts while en route to be sacrificed to a monster. She is wide-eyed, in awe and fear of the brutal world around her. Young Griffith represents the internal struggle of the man who will become the main villain of Berserk. He starts out terrified by the actions he takes to achieve his dream, but slowly comes to realize that he cannot allow the fear of "necessary sacrifices" to keep him from achieving his goals.
For Young Griffith's voice, I'm looking for something similar to Veronica Taylor's performance from the English dub of Berserk 1997, or Barbara Goodson's, from the English dub of the third Golden Age Arc film: The Advent.
(Frikka noticing Puck) "Ohhh!! So cuuute!! An elf? I’ve never seen one!!"
(Young Griffith, looking around an empty street) "Did everyone go home already...? But we said we’d go see the castle
today."(Frikka, various stages of fright) "Eeeek!"
(Young Griffith, noticing a field of corpses) "UWAHHH!!"(Frikka) "He’s... He’s...not human?! N...NO...!"
(Young Griffith) "Yes...what good is regretting it now? What can I say to the dead now? What good is repenting my sins
now?"
A petty bandit who seeks to loot and pillage Frikka's carriage, before running afoul of Guts
(Seeing his boss fall over dead) "Boss?!"
Various combat sounds, grunting, shouting, etc.
Tell me about yourself! With this series being over 300 episodes long, there's a more than likely chance I'll call people back to play multiple minor roles. Building up a cast I can depend on instead of making hundreds of casting calls will save my sanity.
Puck is one of the main characters of Berserk. A talkative, hyperactive, occasionally obnoxious elf, Puck provides the comedic relief of the series, while also bringing out the humanity beneath Guts' gruff exterior. This character will require extreme dedication on the actor/actress' part, as he starts off as the secondary protagonist of the first season, disappears for approximately 90 episodes in season 2, before returning to a leading role from season 3 onward.
For Puck's voice, I'm looking for something similar to Sarah Williams' portrayal in the English dub of Berserk 2017 (NOT Berserk 2016--there is a noticeable difference in her performance).
"Oh, yeah. I’m Puck. Nice to meetcha. Y’see, I was in a troupe of travelling performers but we
were attacked by those bums. Since then I’ve been locked up in a mynah bird’s cage and soaked in a wine
bottle. It’s a wonder I’m still alive. That’s fer sure!""Don’t say I’m like a pet!"
(anger turning to sadness) "Selfish scumbag!! Why’re you always like this?! Only carin’ about bitterness... You don’t even give a damn for what’s around you...!! You’re gonna live for nothin’ but dead people!! You shouldn’t do that...!! It’s sad!!"
Frikka's Uncle is....well, Frikka's Uncle. He's a kindly old man reunited with a niece he thought was sent off to her death.
"Frikka?!"
"What in the world?! Why’ve you come back...?!"

"Frikka!"

"It's Frikka!!"

"Mom, it's Frikka!!"

Frikka's Mother is a poor woman entirely too kind for the brutal world around her.
(Incredulous/Overjoyed) "Frikka!!"
(noticing a group on her doorstep) "Oh. What’s the matter, everyone?"
"I knew it'd be useless..."
Frikka's Father is a poor man at the end of his rope. His love and concern for his daughter is blurred by the frustration of her returning home, where she'll be in danger once more.
While I'm not looking for any sound in particular, I would be interested in hearing something like Liam O'Brien.
"Oh. What’s the matter, everyone?"
"No one believed it at first, but after a time, a girl’s corpse surfaced in the river running behind the castle. A corpse
skewered...from its head through its torso!! The story is that the lord gathers girls to be maidservants!! Four already chosen
from this village...and not one has come back safely...!!""She could have just run away...what a fool!!"
A kindly old man who desperately yearns for a safer future for the next generation
"Ma’am...we’d...like a word with him..."
"But there will be a due reward!"
Anime reaction noises. Shock, outrage, fear, etc.
A sad old woman who lost a granddaughter to Vlad Tepes.
"Please...avenge...my granddaughter..."
"I beseech you... Avenge..."
(sobbing) "Wahhh..."
Vlad Tepes is the "prototype" for the character of the Count. As such, both roles are similar: both are noblemen who were once thought firm but just. Over time, their cruelty and malice grew more and more apparent, torturing and murdering their subjects. They are secretly a being known as an Apostle, a human able to transform into a demonic monster, who serves a master of unsurpassed evil.
The Count adds the extra depth of being a parent. If there is any good left in him, it is due to the love he bears towards his daughter. When forced to choose between his own life and Theresia's, the Count is greatly torn, and full of sorrow.
While not strictly required (as it's something I can do myself while editing), brownie points if you're able to add a good demonic filter for the lines delivered in monster form.
(Vlad Tepes) "Well done. You may leave guards. Welcome, girl."
(The Count) "I don’t care. Arrest anyone who looks like a spy or a drifter. As heretics. I do this all for the good of my subjects."
(Vlad Tepes) "Hoho... A trifle... I thought he would provide more enjoyment... But humans die so soon..."
(The Count, monster form) "Heh...heh heh... Now you understand... It’s futile. No matter how many times you chop off my arms and legs! Each time you cut them off, my body becomes stronger! It grows bigger and bigger! A mere sword can’t POSSIBLE DESTROY ME!"
(Vlad Tepes, monster form) "Well done... I praise you for getting this far. But after all, you’re only human!! THIS IS YOUR LIMIT!!"
(The Count, horrified by himself) "Theresia..." (pronounced tare-raze-ee-uh)
