A Place Further Than The Universe: Episode 1 Fandub
Project Overview
Hello again CCC community!
I've got another project that I've been wanting to do for a while. I've been interested in the concept of fandubs for about a year now and I've been wanting to make a fandub of my own. Though my main issues were that I could never figure out what anime I wanted to fandub, nor could I make the time to produce one. But due to recent events, I now have plenty of free time and want to make my first fandub. And what better anime to dub than one of my all time favorite anime, and arguably the best anime of the past decade (in my opinion of course), A Place Further Than The Universe.
What is, A Place Further Than The Universe
A Place Further Than The Universe (Yorimoi) is an original, modern adventure anime written by Jukki Hanada, produced by Madhouse, and licensed by Crunchyroll.
"Filled with an overwhelming sense of wonder for the world around her, Mari Tamaki has always dreamt of what lies beyond the reaches of the universe. However, despite harboring such large aspirations on the inside, her fear of the unknown and anxiety over her own possible limitations have always held her back from chasing them. But now, in her second year of high school, Mari is more determined than ever to not let any more of her youth go to waste. Still, her fear continues to prevent her from taking that ambitious step forward—that is, until she has a chance encounter with a girl who has grand dreams of her own.
Spurred by her mother's disappearance, Shirase Kobuchizawa has been working hard to fund her trip to Antarctica. Despite facing doubt and ridicule from virtually everyone, Shirase is determined to embark on this expedition to search for her mother in a place further than the universe itself. Inspired by Shirase's resolve, Mari jumps at the chance to join her. Soon, their efforts attract the attention of the bubbly Hinata Miyake, who is eager to stand out, and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a polite girl from a high class background. Together, they set sail toward the frozen south." (MyAnimeList)
To put it briefly, Yorimoi is about 4 unlikely friends who make the best out of their youth by going on an adventure together that they never knew they would. What makes this anime special, is that it's a knife to the heart for otakus like me. I spent my youth cooped up in my own little space, avoiding social interaction, playing video games and watching YouTube and Anime all day. But after watching this show, it taught me that I was wasting my youth, and that I can do so much more with my life. This show taught me that I can still make my life an adventure, but it won't happen unless I take the first step. That is why this anime is special to me and why it inspires me to want to do more with my youth.
How will this project work?
Due to personal circumstances, I will only be dubbing episode 1 for now. The deadline will be October 20th, 2020, which should be plenty of time, but depending on if the first episode is finished early enough, I may be motivated to produce a fandub of the second episode. The reason for the deadline is that I will be gone for approx. 5-6 months after October 27th. If all goes well, I hope to find a new director to take over the project while I'm gone, but if not, then the production of the fandub will halted until I return.
I will be taking on the roles of Director, Writer, and Video/Audio Editor in this project. The types of roles I'm looking for include:
- Voice Actors
- Singers
- Music Producers/Musicians
- Foley Artists
- Video Editors
Additional roles may include:
- Audio Engineers
- Assistant Director
- Graphic Designers
- Writers
More info and instructions will be given to those who are casted. Those who are casted will be invited to my business discord to easily stay in touch with me and the rest of the team during the production. You are not required to join it, but it is HIGHLY recommended. I will be working alongside and keeping in touch with everyone during production to make sure everything goes well and that there are no issues. Because this is a fandub, I can not legally pay anyone for their efforts, therefore this project is 100% FOR FUN.
All the roles for Episode 1 are listed below including a description for each one. I recommend watching the first episode linked above to get a better idea of what it's about.
Progress Update: 25 June, 2020
Hello to those who have auditioned for my project so far! I'd like to thank you all for wanting to be a part of this project of mine. With the deadline for auditions approaching in 5 days, I'd like to give a quick update on the progress I've made so far. I have completed the rewritten script for the English dub and will now begin implementing the lines into a reference video for actors to use while recording. Music Composition is also underway. I have asked a friend of mine who has gladly volunteered to provide the drums for the OP & ED English covers (In exchange for a minor part of course UwO). I will also be asking another friend of mine if he can provide the guitar parts. As for the sound design, I will begin collecting soundscapes as well as foley starting next week. Once again, thank you to those who have auditioned, and I will see you all in 5 days when I make a decision on the cast.

This is one of the main characters of the series and has a lead role with the most lines in episode 1.
Mari Tamaki is a second-year high school student who wants her youth to be an adventure. Her only issue is that she is afraid to take the first step. She is best friends with Megumi Takahashi and becomes friends with Shirase Kobuchizawa, who invites Mari to go to Antarctica with her in episode 1. Mari is very upbeat and encouraging, but is also very much like a child; emotional, irresponsible, and easy to impress.
I prefer a voice that is similar to the character's in the sub: childish, bright, exaggerated
I dreamed you put a wet towel on my face in an attempt to kill me mom.
(Speaking Quickly) Wait! Wait! I Didn't steal it, I swear. I passed by you the other day and I just happened to-
I wanted to do something when I got into high school. Something I'd never done. Something amazing!
This is a supporting character in the series and has a supporting role in episode 1.
Megumi Takahashi is Mari Tamaki's best friend. Megumi attempts to help Mari in her endeavor to make her youth an adventure, though it is difficult with Mari's fear of starting and adventure. Though they are the same age, Megumi is more mature than Mari and does whatever within her ability to help her friend.
I prefer a voice that is similar to the character's in the sub: Vanilla, Unamused, Slightly Nasally
It's Antarctica. You'd need to be a part of an expedition to go.
Well, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.
I don't think there are many girls with hair that long. I'm going to check the first-year classrooms.
This is one of the main characters of the series and has a supporting role in episode 1.
Shirase Kobuchizawa is a third-year high school student who dedicated her youth to saving money to go to Antarctica and find out what happened to her missing mother. When Shirase was in middle school, her mother went on an expedition to Antarctica, but disappeared and was never found. Shirase, at first seeming well put together, is actually prone to reacting extremely to many situations and gets very emotional. It's assumed that she has no friends, but after losing all the money she had saved up, it is Mari who finds and returns it to Shirase, who invites Mari to come to Antarctica with her in episode 1. Shirase has a bipolar personality, being someone who at one moment will be shy and awkward, but will be loud and rowdy the next moment.
I prefer a voice that is similar to the character's in the sub: Serious, awkward, aloof
(crying)Thank you...thank you so much!
They never found her, and she didn't leave much behind for me, so I'm going to go find her.
Crossing the equator, weathering storms, breaking through ice...14,000km from Japan. To that place further than the reaches of the universe, that unapproachable place...
This is a minor character in the series, only appearing in a few episodes with few lines, including episode 1.
Mari's mom is a wicked mistress. Though she loves Mari and helps take care of her when she's being irresponsible, her methods are a little scary.
I prefer a voice that is similar to the character's in the sub: deep, mature, faintly evil
C'mon Mari, it's already noon.
I told you yesterday to tidy up your room.
Going so soon? What's the big bag for?
This is a minor character in the series, only appearing in a few episodes with few lines, including episode 1.
Though Rin Tamaki is younger than Mari, she seems to be the more mature and responsible sister. She can be a bit nosy, but only because she cares about Mari and wants her to be okay when she goes to Antarctica.
What are you doing, Sis?
Sis! I know it's Saturday, but you can't sleep in forev-
This is one of the main characters of the series and has a minor role in episode 1.
Hinata Miyake is a third-year high school student who switched from public school to homeschooling because of an incident that she's embarrassed of. After overhearing their plans and proving to be useful, she is invited to join Mari and Shirase on their journey to Antarctica. Hinata has a positive and energetic personality which serves as a disguise for the issues she's facing.
I prefer a voice that is similar to the character's in the sub: "Childishly Mature", energetic, articulate
That'll be $5.66 ("five sixty-six")
Academics aren’t like sports, anyone can pick this stuff up if they try.
(Angrily) Piss off! Piss off! Piss off, damn it!
This is a minor character and only appears in episode 1 with few lines.
The pink vest bully (possibly a fourth-year student) is one of two that confronts Shirase in an attempt to take her money. She has a condescending tone of voice.
We hear you've got some money on you.
Where's our payment?
This is a minor character and only appears in episode 1 with few lines.
The blue blaser bully (A second-year student) is one of two that confronts Shirase in an attempt to take her money. She is the younger bully and is very smug.
We were making sure no one stole it.
Way to ruin the fun.
This character appears only in episode 1. He has two lines of him reading from an English text book. He has a bland and monotone voice.
Remember to pack what you need, book your flight, and above all else, enjoy your trip.
This is the manager of the store where Hinata works. He/She has one line. I have no preference on the type of voice.
Miyake, come over here for a second!
*gasp of surprise and confusion*
I will need 4 vocalists with a mezzo soprano or soprano vocal range for the OP and ED English covers. Singers will work alongside each other as a band for the ED, but one will be chosen to sing the OP with the other 3 providing backup. Singers also have the option to assist me with writing and revisioning the english versions of the songs. (Knowledge of the Japanese language is not required)
OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaTzRcSyEWc
Choose a portion of any Pop/Rock song(s) and sing a capella.
Say something you think would fit
The editing portion can be a bit of a process, especially with me recently switching from Sony Vegas Pro to Adobe Premiere Pro and still getting used to it. That being said, additional editors will be appreciated to help with this project.
Say something you think would fit
This anime uses a lot of natural sound effects, and sometimes stuff you find on the internet just won't cut it. I will be making the SFX that are needed, but assistance will be appreciated.
