The Island

The Island

Project Overview

Van Rykan Productions presents our upcoming project: The Island! This short (only 4 episodes) audio drama details the journey of 3 survivors of a plane crash, from the perspective of taped confessionals. As the protagonists struggle to survive the wilderness and each other, they realize that this peaceful island isn't as placid as they once assumed.

This project is going to have a quick turn around! Please submit your auditions in the following format:

-3 Takes

-ABC Format (read each line once, then start again for the next take)

-Please try to make each take as unique as possible.

-Please do not remove background noise from your audition, I want to hear the quality of your recording without effects.

I can't wait to hear all of your auditions!

As of May 7th, 2024, auditions for Van Rykan Production's upcoming audio drama, "The Island", are officially closed.

Thank you very much to everyone who submitted!

I have many many wonderful auditions to comb through, but I promise I will be making my decisions and reaching out to those who make the cut soon.

To anyone who does not get the chance to fill one of these roles: 1) nothing personal! I'm so happy that you submitted and 2) I would ask that you keep an eye out for future projects!

    Thanks again, all!

One of three main characters: A journalist with an optimistic personality, Elias is determined to use what little knowledge he has to get off of the Island, and acts as a defacto leader of the survivors of the plane crash. This part, like all of the parts, has a lot of monologuing, so be prepared for that!

  • I remember looking out the window when the left wing of the plane lost both of its engines. The panic on board was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. The whole plane was shaking like a rock tumbler, passengers bouncing around the cabin, screaming, crying…it was truly horrific…then I hit my head and everything went black.

  • It’s day…eight, I think? I’m starting to lose track.

  • Talking to the tape helps. Get your frustrations out. Plus, think of how many people will want to hear what we went through if we make it back home?

A stewardess aboard the doomed plane flight, she is a smart woman with a strong personality, can be rude without realizing it, but is very kind at heart.

  • I don’t know why I’m recording again. I guess I’m just lonely…and it IS helping a little bit. This new guy, Jameson, is a real pain in the ass. He refuses to help Elias and me, spends his time moping and whining about how hard the rocks are when we sleep, and how many bugs are here. He found a spider on him this morning and screamed like a little girl. He’s a loser and I don’t know how much more I can take.

  • [Answering the question: "Do you know who my father is?"] No, I don’t, and unless he’s here with an airplane and a steak dinner, I don’t give a shit who he is!

  • I want to argue…but you’re pretty convincing…I’m in.

Jameson is a true nepo baby. Son of a rich businessman, he's arrogant, haughty, and rude, but terrified and lonely on the inside as he struggles with his situation, being stranded on the island.

  • Well… I want it to go on record that I still think this is stupid. Once my father realizes I’m missing, he’s going to spare no expense in finding me, so I don’t know what all the fuss is about, [shudder] killing animals and roaming around this awful place. It’s so dirty and there’s bugs everywhere, and that girl is getting sick from the water. We’ve got plenty of snacks and food from the plane. I won’t touch that gamey, nasty food Elias keeps pushing on me. Any day now, a ship is going to find us and we’re going home.

  • [groaning] So someone tied a bunch of bones to a stick. So what?

  • [defensively, tone angry] Well why are you being such a bitch to me?

The Narrator is the guide through the whole drama. Voice should be calm but resonant. Open to all voices!

  • Good evening, esteemed listeners. Thank you for tuning in. Before we embark on this educational program, I must offer a word of caution. The recordings you are about to hear may elicit discomfort in some individuals. They are raw, unfiltered accounts of an extraordinary ordeal.

  • This tape was discovered in 1995, several miles from the wreckage of Thai Airways Flight 407, a transatlantic voyage from New York to Bangkok that met an untimely fate over the vast expanse of the ocean. What sets these recordings apart is their origin—they were found nestled amidst the foliage of a remote, densely forested island known as Isla Alumar. Not much has been discovered about this remote stretch of land in the South Pacific, but it is believed to be uninhabited. The following recordings, however, make one wonder.

  • The individual behind these recordings identifies himself as a journalist, and through his lens, we are offered a glimpse into the surreal realities of survival in a place untouched by civilization. His narrative unfolds with an eerie intimacy, capturing moments of desperation, resilience, and perhaps even madness. Our journalist, along with three other survivors of the crash, relate their experience in vivid detail.
