[CLOSED] Wanderer's Journal - A fiction podcast

Project Overview

Alternate application through this google form

What is it?

Wanderer’s Journal is a fantasy fiction podcast about Marigold and Pluto, two people from different backgrounds, and their unlikely friendship formed through a magical journal that links them. Each of them finds a journal, learns that their voice is recorded into it, and can be both read and played back to the other. Unbeknownst to them, they become a part of an ancient mystery, and see the world from new angles.

The center of the podcast is the growing connection between Marigold and Pluto, and the story that unfolds for each of them on their journey.

The main themes are friendships in spite of distance, the way places change depending on who experiences them, and how circumstances shape people and the world.

What are we looking for?

We are currently looking for some people to help us produce season 1. Particularly, we are on the lookout for three voice actors to play the central characters in season 1 (more characters will be introduced in later seasons if this turns out well), a sound designer, and a promotional artist who can create a nice logo and similar. We currently have an outline of season 1, 10 episodes long, and have completed a draft of the first episode script.

Expectations and payment

To be transparent from the get-go, we are both quite new to creating audio fiction, and are thus not expecting to create a completely professional product. We will pay each of these parts at least a one-time payment as listed, but we are well-aware that it is below industry standards. Please be aware of that too and know your value. We would love to pay more, but are currently paying out of pocket. Later payments largely depend on whether the podcast will have an income eventually. We will try to compensate your work, but do not expect much. It is largely a labor of love.

Payment can unfortunately only be done through PayPal at the moment, but we may be able to find an alternative.

While we know this also means we can’t demand much from you, we do also expect a certain level of commitment if you get a part. Production will most likely begin in august or early fall, though we are currently quite lenient with deadlines.

Requirements

Communication will be done through discord, so you should ideally have that.

We have no age restriction on auditioning at the moment (safe for discord's own age restriction) as long as you can sound the part.

If you are interested in this project even beyond just the casting, you can join our discord server here.

Latest Updates

  • Casting is done!

Thank you so much to everyone who auditioned and shared their work! Everyone did an incredible job, and it was not an easy decision by any means. We had more than 100 auditions on castingcall alone, and that's not counting the people who auditioned through the Google form.

If you have not heard from us, you are welcome to keep an eye out for new casting calls in the future. If you are interested in the project beyond just the casting, feel free to follow us on Twitter @wanderjournpod or tumblr @wanderersjournalpod

  • Final days of the casting call

We are entering the final days of the casting call. We would like to thank everyone who has sent auditions so far. We've had so many incredible and talented people give their take, and there is no doubt it will be a tough choice.

Auditions officially close on July 1st at 4 pm PDT. If you know anyone who may be interested in auditioning before then, feel free to let them know.

The days following the deadline, we will slowly be sending out emails and messages to those we are interesting in casting. Here, we will inform more about the exact details of the project, to ensure we're on the same page, and that they are still interested in being a part of it.

If you do not end up getting a part once the final decision has been made, feel free to keep an eye on the project going forward if you want. More parts will open up eventually, and we would love to get input from some of the talented people here. And if you think this project sounds cool, and you would like to listen to it or support it, you can follow us on twitter @wanderjournpod or tumblr @wanderersjournalpod.

  • Increased rate for audio engineer!

While it is still far below industry standards (especially since this is just the guaranteed one season flat rate, not per episode), we've increased the payment for the audio engineer to 75 USD. We plan to compensate the work for that and every part along the way, but all payments are currently being made out of pocket by me (some University student) so it's not much.

The flat rates stated will not be the only payment all season for any part, but it's what we can guarantee for now. I'll definitely be putting a bit of money aside for the people involved. We are hoping that some listeners will be willing to tip along the way for additional income.

For reference, each episode will likely be somewhere below 14 minutes long, and season 1 contains 10 episodes.

For a potential season 2, we plan to run a crowdfunding campaign so that rates can be more acceptable in the future.

Thank you for following this casting call!

  • We've changed the deadline

Because we're getting more auditions than we previously thought, we've shortened the deadline by eleven days. It's also more convenient for when we have to make the final choice.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted so far!

Marigold (she/they)

Paid: Flat Rate 25 USD
cast offsite

Marigold has spent her entire life underground with her head mostly buried in ancient books. They are incredibly interested in ancient history and have spent a lot of time trying to understand the world. Marigold is thus not very good at talking to people, even though they’ve always lived in a fairly social community. She knows more about history and the world than most however, and has always wanted to get a closer look.

Marigold is quite scared and anxious around people, and not very good at talking to them face to face. She is intelligent, but has a tendency not to properly notice the things right in front of her. We are looking for someone who sounds young (18-20s), curious, and a bit scatter-brained.

  • It feels like there’s something in here, something that wants to get me. I think that might be the exhaustion talking.

  • Obviously, no book should be able to survive the wilderness in such good condition, especially not when its cover is worse for wear, but also because– People don’t go into the forest. They haven’t for– gods, for centuries. Who would’ve been here to leave it on the floor at all? How long has it been here? How does it work?

  • [in a self soothing tone] I’ll be out in the open soon enough, and then– and then I’ll do so many things. There will be– there will be so many more new things to learn and see, and I’ll get to go wherever I want!

Pluto (she/he)

Paid: Flat Rate 25 USD
Role assigned to: Infinitybal

Pluto has been traveling for a very long time, and seen a lot of the world. She is always on the move, and despises feeling trapped. He is incredibly resourceful and is good at understanding cultures quite quickly. This makes it easier for her to talk to people. He learned a long time ago how to survive in a world that isn’t always kind. Pluto is also dyslexic and quite insecure about it.

Pluto is on the more mature side (40s) and generally sounds quite hesitant. She speaks quite flatly and logically, and occasionally with confidence depending on who he is talking to.

  • Oh gods, the journal spoke to me. And it’s um– it’s also writing down what I say I think? [quietly, and obviously exasperated] I don’t know how I always manage to stumble into these things.

  • But well– I’ve learned that sometimes, being drawn to something isn’t necessarily a good thing. In my experience, it’s usually quite a bad thing actually [bitter laughter]. But um– that’s not– that’s hardly important.

  • I wasn’t sure what the journal was, or why I was so drawn to it, but what I did know was that I’m tired. I’m not as adventurous as I used to be, certainly not as curious as you seem to be, so I thought I could give this journal to someone who was.

Creature is a creature in the forest, who befriends Pluto on his journey.

Creature is a strange animal or monster of indeterminate origin. It communicates through creature sounds. What exactly this means is for you to interpret.

We are looking for someone who can sound inhuman, but still communicate emotion through strange sounds.

  • [concerned creature sound]

  • [angry creature sound]

  • [happy creature sound]

While we can handle the foundational dialogue editing and timing, we are short on experience when it comes to things such as soundscaping. We would love to have someone there to be responsible for that, and will try to provide any instruction you might need.

Currently we only have the flat rate set to 75 USD, which as previously stated, is unfortunately below industry standards. This might be negotiable, and you are welcome to leave your contact information even if you are outside of the range. We may contact you later.

Please provide an example of soundscaping or any audio work you may have done in the past.

We are looking for an artist or graphic designer who can design nice promotional material. Primarily we are just looking for a logo right now, so we're looking for a fairly minimalistic style. Though if you'd want to help out more in the future that would be wonderful.

Currently we only have the flat rate set to 25 USD, which as previously stated, is unfortunately far below industry standards. This might be negotiable, and you are welcome to leave your contact information even if you are outside of the range. We may contact you later.

Please provide an example of any artwork you feel is relevant.
