About the project

Log has spent their entire life, as far as they can remember, alone inside a single library train cart in the sky. Their only knowledge of the outside world is limited to books from a long time ago on earth. Log has never thought to question their existence or the world outside, until one day their cart crashes. Here, they meet Tinker, a member of a resistance group, who turns their world upside down.

The Mechadova Engine is an upcoming 15-episode queer steampunk audio drama. It takes place in a sci-fi world entirely confined to giant trains on rails in the sky. It has elements of alternate history, and takes inspiration from the late 1800s-early 1900s. It's a story about meaningless structures, the power of friendship, and how knowledge is preserved and retold.

Potential content warnings include oppression, overt generational class differences, and implied police violence.

Important information

This is only a casting call for episode 1, as the rest of the show will depend on an all-or-nothing crowdfunding campaign. For episode 1, you will receive a flat rate of $20 preferably paid through PayPal. If the rest of the show gets made, and you choose to stay involved, expect a $15/episode minimum. Keep in mind that this is below industry standard. Tinker will feature in the majority of intended episodes.

The project is currently planned to be 15 episodes, though it is not impossible that through reworking the current drafts, this will change slightly.

This casting call is only for the role of Tinker, and thus only open to Black Nonbinary people. There is a sensitivity reader attached, so this will not be a part of your work, though you are welcome to provide suggestions along the way if you want to add more of yourself to the character.

This is a Non-Union project. As a rule of thumb, all recording is remote and asynchronous, though remote synchronous recording is a possibility if the VAs in that scene prefer it. Live directed sessions are also possible. Recording is planned to start sometime in February.

Paid: Flat Rate 20 USD

Tinker uses all pronouns and is written as nonbinary/genderqueer.

Tinker is intended to be in their 20s. She is a talented engineer, and understands the inner workings of the trains better than most people. He is very intelligent, but has a tendency to make spontaneous decisions if he thinks it’s an important opportunity. They handle a lot of "field work", tampering with and looking into how engines work, and are incredibly skilled at going unnoticed. Towards the end, Tinker is in a queerplatonic relationship.

Her voice is open to interpretation, but warmth is encouraged.

Must be nonbinary/genderqueer and Black to audition.

  • “[insistently complimenting,] Yeah, because you’d never been outside before. That doesn’t mean you’re not smart, in fact, now that I think about it, I think the way you’ve handled it so far makes you pretty damn brilliant.”

  • [concerned, warm] Log, are you alright? Would you like a hug?”
