Resilience | LGBT+/Sci-fi/Action | Original Motion Comic

Project Overview

Hello!

Resilience is an original motion comic about a trans woman retired from her life as an assassin who is forced to make good on an old promise to destroy the government of a declining space colony. It's a little bit John Wick, a little bit Hiroyuki Imaishi, and it's loosely based on the obscure 90s anime 'The Big O'. It's a story about found family, and trans power.

For this story to be accessible to all audiences, the characters will need to be voiced.

I'm a filmmaker and a media composer, as well as the sole creator of a webcomic that ran for three years. I decided I wanted to put these experiences together and work with motion comics and vertical video, and so began creating episodes of 'Resilience' in 2023.

I currently finish a 1 minute episode every fortnight. Dialogue is quite sparse, so actors may be needed for as little as a couple of sentences every few months.

That means that while this is a long term commitment, it isn't intrusive or time consuming. You don't have to be the most talented performer around, or have the fanciest equipment - I'm mostly here to meet a great group of collaborators.

This opportunity is not unpaid. And, the deferred payment is not conditional on the project's success.

I always pay my collaborators. However, on this occasion due to various personal circumstances I'm going through a rough patch. So, while I have to list this project as unpaid, as payment will likely be small and I can't estimate when I'll be able to afford it, I will eventually be able to provide some small amount of payment.

In the meantime, and to supplement this, I'd be overjoyed to offer my skills as a web developer, composer and illustrator instead.

I'm casting for cis- and transgender roles. As a trans creative myself, I'm aware of and fully respect the uncertainty and frustration trans actors face when auditioning for roles to the effect of 'how "trans" should I look/sound?'. In the case of this and all subsequent casting calls for Resilience, if in doubt, submit the audition anyway. All transfemme characters in the story have some amount of voice training, but this need not be to the point of passing. "Slightly not-cis" is fine. Likewise, if you've since lost the ability to return to anything even close to a non-passing voice, that's fine too!

Content warnings for Resilience include mentions of Trans/queerphobia, death, hate crimes including murder, mental health including self harm, unsupportive families. Most of the story is rated Teen, though a couple of episodes will be restricted to 18+.

For this reason, please do not audition if you are not 18+.

Voice actors will have full access to the draft script following being cast. One advantage of long-form webcomic releases is that this will allow for actors to opt out of episodes or suggest edits to portions of the script to be more accommodating for their performance.

Tentative deadline is May 31st. Once cast, timelines can be flexible to work alongside your other commitments. Communication will take place over Discord. Further roles to be cast at a later date - due to the drawn-out timescale of the medium, it would be unfair to cast these any earlier. However, speculative applications, especially from transmasc voices are very welcome. Please direct questions to Eyre#4885.

Thank you very much for reading! I hope you'll consider participating in this project!

On an unrelated note, I'm very sorry that the panel reading 'Eyre's Previous Works' (to the left of the screen on desktop) are all broken or very old links. I asked the moderators about this and apparently the feature is a hangover from previous versions of the site, and can't currently be updated. My broken links are all to demo reels from when I was smol. To see my recent work, visit my profile or visit the links in this description. Updated versions of all the work at the broken links can be found by poking around the early releases by Unredacted Productions.

Latest Updates

  • New Casting Call!

    Hi everyone,

Thank you all so much for your auditions to this project! I never anticipated that I'd have so much interest, and I regretted immensely having to not select so many talented voices.

Thank you so much for your support!

I realise it's far too late to be very helpful, but if you would like feedback on your original auditions, please DM me.

As promised, further roles on the project have now opened up, and I've posted a casting call for two transmasc voice actors.

The pitch is much the same as it was originally. If you or someone you know would be interested in the roles of Ben - a kindhearted older brother figure to Shaeya and Robin, or Rousseau - an eccentric journalist and proud dad to many guinea pigs, please consider sharing, or putting in an audition!

I hope everyone has had a good summer. Once again, thank you so much for your interest in Resilience.

    Best,

    Tara

  • The Final Weekend!

    Hi everyone,

Thank you all so much for the fantastic, kind and generous response to this project over the past couple of weeks! I never anticipated that at this stage of the project I'd have 31 submissions. Thank you so much for your support! My thanks goes out in particular to the folks who have shared the project with others, and recommended that they audition.

Going into this final weekend, there is still one role that has had no auditions.

If you or someone you know might be interested in the role of Audrey, please consider putting in an audition!

She's a fantastic character - a voice of reason, an unwitting political outcast, a loving friend, and all-round wonderful person. She appears very early in the story, and is a lead role right through until the end. Though, she's sparing with her words, and never says more than she needs to.

I do have anticipate having one or two strings I can pull to get submissions off-site from my own network, but I'd be disappointed to cast the role without contest from elsewhere.

Regardless of the outcome of this though, if I do have to extend the project deadline, it won't be for long, and I'll be sure to cast all the roles with which I'm satisfied shortly after the original deadline of the 31st.

So, if you or someone you know is interested in a role that is contested, you have until this coming Wednesday to put in an audition!

I'm genuinely overjoyed that later this coming week I'll be reaching out to everyone who's submitted, thanking folks properly for their time, and sitting down properly with the folks who've been cast!

That's all I have to update you on for now. If you have any questions, suggestions, or just want to say hi, please don't hesitate to reach out and message me!

I very much look forward to speaking properly later this coming week!

    All the very best,

    Tara

Disaffected, distant, unstoppable. A retired assassin who assembled a shelter for rejected trans youth out in the only place their society will never find them.

Calm, articulate, hell-bent on revenge. A former philosopher, tricked into upholding a system of exclusion, gatekeeping and murder.

During the course of the story, Nathalie reaches out to Katrina - her former partner and lover - and forces her to make good on an old promise that will fulfill her fantasies of revenge.

Role assigned to: Adara

Quiet, practical, does not suffer fools lightly. If Nathalie is an "old friend" of Katrina's, then Audrey is her "current friend". And, all things considered, a much better one.

Audrey and Katrina have saved each others' lives more times than they can count. The shelter for young queer people that Katrina founded would not exist without Audrey to support her. Audrey's past and background is very much a "need-to-know basis", and she does not trust easily.

Black, cisgender woman, any accent.

  • "We line the roads with the papers we’ve put great value into every night. In the morning when the Boundary has taken them and they have all gone, we resume. We write more. The energy we put into our words keeps the instability down. Together, we keep the threshold at bay. If anything seems to spontaneously vanish in this house, it’s much more likely that whoever’s on cleaning duty moved it while sweeping.

  • “Get back quickly. We’ve just had a new arrival. They’re in bad shape.”

Indifferent, bitter, well out of his depth. Mr Jones is a failed revolutionary turned fixer for the mob. In the start of the story, he is hired by Nathalie to help acquire Katrina's cooperation.

Role assigned to: Faye Kaiser-Valdera

Curious, impulsive, actively coming of age while everything else is going on. One year before the start of the story, Katrina saved Shaeya's life. While everything else is going on, Shaeya is reckoning with her own trauma, nurturing her collection of retro computing gear, and learning about the world by rifling through some dead guy's rucksack.

  • “The 11 o’clock respawn left a bin of electronics at the end of the road. I found the last parts to fix the old Amiga.”

  • "You found this book in a cupboard, right? Separate from the others? The target knew you were coming? This was the most stable thing in the house, so you found it really quickly? This book predicts that. But slipped into the front cover was a note addressed to me."

  • "A finger's worth of dark from daybreak, he steps into a red dress. A flame caught in a mirror the width of a coffin."

He's a mob boss. He seems chill when we first meet him, but as with most mob bosses he's actually pretty awful.

Katrina kills him in the beginning of the story, but his impact lingers throughout.

Role assigned to: L. Oakes

Timid, slowly growing to know and love themselves. Robin is a young enby who is rescued at the beginning of the story. Rarely seen apart from Ben, who will be cast later. Robin has a lot of patience for Shaeya, and helps her sort through the books describing the mysteries at the heart of the colony.
