Persona 4: The Animation Fandub

Persona 4: The Animation Fandub

Project Overview

A few months ago I tried making a Persona 4 fandub but I didn't get enough auditions or enough interest for it to pursue it further so I thought I'd try it again on this site.

Persona 4 is a videogame developed by Atlus that was adapted into a 26 Episode Anime by AIC ASTA. The story follows highschool student Yu Narukami who has moved from Tokyo to Inaba to stay with his uncle and cousin, while his parents are away on business. However, after a murder shakes up the small town, things get even more crazy when he discovers the mysterious "Midnight Channel," and that he has the even stranger ability to enter TVs. Accompanied by his disbelieving friends Yu discovers another world inside the TVs that seems to be connected with the murder. They also discover the ability to summon 'Persona', their 'other selves', whose power they can use to fight the shadows that inhabit the TV world. The murders, the Midnight Channel, the world inside the TV, and Persona. Yu and his friends fight to figure out how they're connected, and to solve the case before it's too late.

I decided to do Persona 4: The Animation for a fandub because A. I wanted to have some more practice at ADR, Sound, etc. editing plus some voice acting and B. I thought it'd be fun to do a fandub of a great anime that just so happens to be adapting one of my all time favorite games.

I'm going to be more focusing on the first half of the series first. I'll only think about Episodes 14-26 when I get to that point. At this moment in time I'm mainly looking for roles for the major characters and maybe some minor ones. Also if there's a character not present it's probably because I don't need him straight away. If I need to add a role or need a voice for a character I will. Just as a little heads up some of the Audition Lines were taken from Persona 4 and Persona 4: Arena in addition to Persona 4: The Animation. I'll also allow you to be able to give your own unique take on a character or base your voice off the character's voice from the English Dub so do what suits you.

As for requirements for auditioning:
-Decent Microphone

-Commitment to the project

-Be respecful

Now if you want ask me a question, want to be part of the project besides voice acting (Editing, etc.) or anything related at all post in the comments below or contact me at [redacted]

Good Luck and have fun with your auditions. :)

Latest Updates

  • Persona 4: The Animation Fandub Update #4: Temporary Hiatus

Hello everybody. Espionage here to bring some slightly unfortunate news: I am taking a little hiatus from my Persona 4 Fandub series.

Now I'm going to still work on the series but the scripts probably won't be out until my schedule gets cleared up since I have a lot of school piling up and I have some obligations to some other projects that have to be met. If things go my way I could be working on this project a lot more in May but as it stands now I might just not have enough time to spare.

Sorry for the Inconvience and I hope I'll be able to make this project awesome when I return. :)

  • Persona 4: The Animation Fandub Update #3

Sorry for not updating for a while. Just wanted to say that I'm still sorting some stuff out and will update immediately once I have everything ready to go.

  • Persona 4: The Animation Fandub Update #2

Just wanted to say that the Deadline has been extended from March 20th to Match 23rd.

However I am going to be casting most of the Major Roles before the deadline hits (Probably the 17th-19th) so if you re-do for the major roles or want to audition for the major roles... Now's your chance.

Once I get the Major Roles settled I'll be going more into the production process and such.

  • Persona 4: The Animation Fandub Update #1

Hello and welcome to a short Update for the Persona 4: The Animation Fandub! Firstly I would like to thank all of the people who have auditioned so far. Seriously it really means a lot and most of them were pretty good performances if I do say so myself.

All I wanted to do today was just list some random things off:

-I might be in the market for some crew members like a Script Editor and such.
-It would be cool if Yu Narukami and Tohru Adachi were voiced by the same guy. Now if they did end up being voiced by two different people I'd be fine but if one person can pull off both that'd be pretty good as well.

-I've got most if not all of my sound effects ready and I'm well into the script of Episode 1 of the series.

-I wanna try to get the Persona 4 Soundtrack and other Persona soundtrack's in as much as I can.

-Lastly if you would like to contact me about the script, characters, or anything else please message me.

That's it for this short update and I hope you have a great night! (or day depending on what time your reading this) :)

Kanji is a student at Yasogami High School. His father is deceased. Kanji and his mother run a textile shop, which is frequented by the Amagi Inn staff. For this reason he is adept at sewing and knitting. He often skips classes and gets into many fights. Despite his seemingly rough personality, it is often due to misunderstandings. For example, he once went after a rowdy biker gang, but only to stop them from disturbing his mother. He has certain sexuality issues. Kanji is scared of showing any potentially feminine interests, and compensates with a tough guy facade. Compared to the rest of the team, Kanji tends to be a bit slow on the uptake. However, he is straightforward and decisive. Over time he realizes that his impulsive actions can drag others down, and that he can balance that by instead giving them his support.

  • Isn't it too early to be napping? Or what, are you too freaked out?

Yosuke is a clumsy transer student who arrived in Inaba six months before Yu did. He is often the target for jokes for his lack of muscles and body strength and can be seen as a pushover. He doesn't usually think before he speaks which can lead to him unintentionally insulting someone or saying something he didn't mean to. He tends to be a wannabe ladies man and has a fascination with girls. However underneath all of that he show's great insight, is often on the task at hand, and can be very serious at times. His biggest insecurities are boredom and loneliness. He also has a good spirit, is good with people's emotions, apologetic, and will always stick by his friends.

  • Whew, it's finally over... Yikes, now that I'm out of danger, I gotta take a leak...!

  • See? Everything you do causes confusion, so shush up already.

Margaret is the new assistant to Igor and resides in The Velvet Room. She makes her first appearance alongside Igor, when Yu fell into his subconscious during his trip to Inaba. Margaret also takes care to mention that the protagonist is the first guest of the Velvet Room not to be welcomed by Igor. Through the protagonist's interactions with Margaret, it is revealed that Margaret possesses a silly, whimsical sense of humor, despite her initial image as a composed and dignified woman. She takes over many of Igor's duties, such as explaining to Yu many things about Personas and how to get stronger. Furthermore, she always comments on the bonds Yu has made over the course of the show at the beginning of each episode. Margaret is a quiet, professional woman and very loyal to Igor.

Having lost both her parents in a car accident when she was very young Naoto acts very mature in spite of her age. As a descendant of a respected lineage of famous detectives she wears formal clothing, and deepens her voice when she speaks in a sophisticated, stilted manner. Naoto has difficulty making friends and is lonely as a result. Her biggest insecurity is her gender as well as her age. She yearns to be seen as an adult, and expresses frustration at being treated like a child by the police force. She hates being looked down upon, and fears no one will take her seriously as a female in a sexist occupation field. Naoto is ashamed of being female. Despite her mature nature, Naoto has a shy side to her. And when in a state of fear and/or panic, her voice becomes more feminine than usual, possibly meaning she only has a masculine voice when she is composed.

Mitsuo suffers from poor self-esteem due to ridicule for his appearance, and in turn his social isolation. This makes him self-centered, delusional, attention-dependent and aggressive. Mitsuo is immature, and often throws tantrums if something upsets him, such as tripping over a garbage bag or being rejected by Yukiko. If anyone tries to confront him about his life's emptiness, having no friends or accomplishments, he lashes out into a state of anger and ignorance. Although he is so often alone and looked down upon, Mitsuo has an extreme need for attention, whether it be positive or negative. Mitsuo does not display any notable skills, interests or good attributes other than his love for video games and the internet because of how empty his life is. To make up for his lack of good attributes and help him cope, he boasts about beating video game bosses, and grows to believe he and Yukiko love one-another; as she's the most popular girl in town, that would make him of high social standing as well. However, he merely stalks her and takes photographs of her with her friends, while harboring hatred for everyone else.

While he cares about his daughter he has severe problems in being a father for her as she constantly reminds him of his deceased wife Chisato. He is also worried about Yu's involvement in the case, and gets easily enraged when stressed.

  • This town is my town. It's the place where you and Nanako live. That's why I'm gonna live on, protecting this place. As a detective... as a father.

Being a comic relief character, Teddie is seen flirting at the girls of the Investigation Team on numerous occasions, but fails every time. Other than that, he is bubbly and cute and is known to lighten the mood when investigating the case, much like Chie. He idolizes and respects Yu, to the point of calling him 'Sensei.' His speech is filled with dozens of bear puns, like saying "Bear-sona" while summoning his Persona. In the beginning he acts much like a coward when Shadows are near  but changes his ways as the story progresses. His biggest insecurity is his own identity. Throughout the story Teddie struggles to find out his own self and his place in both the TV world and the real world as he has lost his own memories. As the story progress, Teddie begins to develop a fear that he perhaps has no "true self" and that he has no memories to recover, but continues to search for them regardless.

He blatantly tells his students that their studies are ultimately useless, as they will undoubtedly fail to get a decent job in Inaba regardless. Morooka also appears to have a grudge against women as well as Narukami. He treats his students rudely, and places Yu on his "Shit List" within the first few minutes of meeting him.

Adachi also often accidentally (and sometimes purposely) blurts out the police investigation results to the Investigation Team much to his own chagrin. He can be seen hanging around Junes Department Store usually "killing time". His actions in public hide his normal thoughts and desires however. Despite him being a little mysterious He always retains a cheerful, nonchalant attitude.

Rise is cheerful, outspoken, naughty, cute, and is quite boastful about herself, although very sweet deep down. She is referred to as a "dangerous girl" by Chie Satonaka, due to her boldness in flirting with Yu, and her teasing of Yosuke and Kanji. Rise is quickly annoyed by the smallest things, which ends up with her crying dramatically, and sometimes producing crocodile tears. She's rather childish and possessive; she once pouted and told Yu he mustn’t call another girl “cute”. She has also shown her competitive side on many occasions, and she’s mocked Yukiko Amagi’s insecurity and her cooking. She used to be an idol, but she quit to work at her family business. She is stressed out, and tired of show business because she doesn't know if the Rise that everyone admires is the 'real' Rise, or the persona of Risette that she presents to the masses. Her biggest insecurity is her individuality. She fears that she has no true self and that her career is making her lose it due to constantly putting up fake faces to the general public. While she initially attempts to change this by running away she is left feeling unsatisfied.

  • You did give it back instead of keeping it... So thank you.

As a smart, beautiful, feminine, respectful and fair-skinned teenager, she has attracted many male characters in Inaba, but acts uncomfortably when someone mentions her beauty. At first, Yukiko is very introverted, but she gets livelier after she is rescued from the Midnight Channel. She also truly appreciates and cares about others and often vows to become an even stronger, more dependable person. Yukiko is also open-minded and straightforward. Yukiko is not only shown to be quite fearless and unflinching in the face of creepy atmospheres and surroundings. Her biggest insecurity is being chained down. Her whole life she has felt she is on a railroad track with no opportunity for deviation. She then develops a desire to run away from such life and start anew.

Chie's insecurity is her Femininity often having an inferiority complex when comparing herself to her best friend Yukiko. Personality-wise, Aika is stoic and calm. She doesn't talk much and a gives off an emotionless impression to most people. It is a running gag through the series that the Aiya restaurant (specifically Aika) will deliver anything, anywhere, anytime. This started with the delivery in the middle of escaping from Kanji, where Aika somehow found Chie to deliver her order, even though Chie never really said where she was, and they were on the move. A second running gag is that Aika will tell the group to just leave the bowls anywhere when they're through with the food, implying that Aika or someone at Aiya will pick them up, regardless of where they are.

He hated Yosuke (possibly because he encouraged Saki to work for Junes) and therefore the Protagonist for being friends with Yosuke. Naoki meets Yu during the school camping trip and is asked for some antacids for Yosuke. He is childhood friends with Kanji Tatsumi yet they don't talk often and are in different homeroom classes.

Ai is a highly materialistic girl with a prima donna complex, who often talks down to her admirers, and has no qualms with outwardly insulting them, deeming their confessions worthless if their looks aren't up to par with her standards. She is also extremely selfish, but being with Yu reveals her to be a shy person and a sweet, loving soul; she harbors a crush on Kou. She fears rejection and acts dramatically upon receiving it, culminating in an attempt to jump off the school roof. She puts herself through various trials to become more appealing to her choice, and appears so desperate for love that she forces Narukami into briefly dating her. However, due to her lack of actual affection for him, she ends up pushing him around and treating him cruelly. When Ai overhears Kou mentioning he likes Chie. Kou introduces Yu to the team and Ai but Ai leaves immediately afterwards which leads to most of the other members leaving too. Kou and Yu are left alone in the gym. As the days go by, they practice their game with the few members still around. Under Ai's pressure, Yu asks Kou about his taste in women and he reveals his crush on Chie to Yu. Not much later, a game is set up and Kou confides that it will probably be his last game to Yu. Kou tries his hardest in the game with a team barely scraped together (even Yosuke was good enough for them). But even so, Kou tries his hardest against the other team leaving him so focused he that doesn't notice Ai and Chie's fight which Yosuke and Yu are distracted by. Igor has plays the role of Proprietor of the mysterious Velvet Room, a space which transcends both dream and reality. As the Proprietor, Igor provides insight to Yu regarding his powers, emotional bonds, and possible dangers that await them in their journey. Despite his rather striking appearance, Igor bears a calm and courteous demeanor while speaking with Yu. Though the well-being of Yu is important to him, he reserves the disclosure of certain information for more "timely" points in the story. During conversations concerning Yu’s actions, Igor opts for rather cryptic comments that tend to foreshadow coming events and possibly the outcome of the story as a whole, regardless of whether or not those comments are at the time understood (which may be his intent). This suggests that Igor may have near-omniscience, though by his own admission, there are things that even he can't foresee. He is also accompanied by his assistant Margaret.
