Project Overview

Sigh of the Abyss is an upcoming dark fantasy visual novel set in the sweltering Mediterranean, in a world where magick is real and society welcomes Renaissance modernity. 



Embrace the monster within

 A force dark and terrible, the Abyss, has given birth to the Envoy. Will the Envoy do Its bidding or will she defy it?

Important

This casting call is for lines meant to be used in trailers and other promotional material, hence the flat rate. The estimated average of lines is 15 (the protagonist will have more, supporting characters like Ascanio and Atri less).

If you are cast for this role, more work will soon come your way (based on the results of the Kickstarter). Please only apply if you intend to also voice the game.

A Kickstarter campaign will be launching Q1 this year, and will fund partial voice acting of the game.

The rate for the full game will be $3 per line.


Details ▪ good to know

- The setting is LGBTQ+ positive. Malec, Alpheon and Marané are the bisexual love interests, Sylas is the ace lesbian love interest.

- Content warnings: the game will feature non-sexual implied nudity & blood, and text-only descriptions of gore, murder and other generally dark subjects. The game is still in development and the content warning are subject to change. Please keep them in mind when applying. The intended audience is 16+. If you'd like to ask whether a particular topic is included or not, drop me a line on Twitter and I'll be happy to answer :)

- Unlike our previous project, there will be no NSFW of sexual nature. Intimacy and tenderness will be portrayed with a fade to black once things get steamier.

- Malec and Marané would be best represented by SWANA talent. Marané comes from a fantasy version of the Bengal region, and Malec is partly from a fantasy version of Tunisia. 

- Low quality recordings won't be considered.

- Please submit max 3 takes per line.

    This casting call received more than 500 submissions—that is incredibly exciting! I love being able to hear the characters I wrote :D

    (I had to unlist the project since it was not closing properly.)

    I will listen to all the submissions one more time, compile a shortlist and then make the final decision. The people cast for the seven roles will be contacted tomorrow (Jan 20).

    If you didn't get selected, worry not! Opportunities for more roles will open up if the Kickstarter campaign is successful.

The lead role. When she awakens, Zara is fully formed, yet new to the world. Receptive to the ancient voice of the Abyss, she is one of its Envoys, and commands dark, terrible powers.

I imagine her voice slightly husky, with a British accent. She is approaching her 30s.

The protagonist's personality is determined by the player; this makes her a line-heavy role, as some lines need to be recorded multiple times with different emotions coloring them, and some need to be neutral enough to fit multiple emotions.

Main role. Not many urchins reach adult age--Sylas is one of the lucky few. Scrappy and cheerful, she calls everyone her friend, but in truth it's quite hard to gain her trust. She has an unshakeable faith in the Goddess; if she truly believes, she thinks everything will be forgiven. She speaks a bit faster than the others.

She is in her mid 20s.

Main role. SWANA talent preferred. The mages of Carolise are confined in the Halls--part institution, part prison. Thanks to her talent and connections, high-ranking mage Marané is allowed to roam the city and guide the protagonist.

While she enjoys the finer things in life, seeing the struggles of the people first-hand unsettle her. She wants to make a difference for them, not for herself. She is in her early 30s, and her every word is calculated.

A main role. Just like the protagonist, Alpheon embodies a mysterious dark foce. Unlike her, he runs away from his duties to play minstrel, gallivant, and be a flirt. He is naturally empathetic and his powers allow him to infiltrate the minds of others, influence them or break them.

Good humming, possibly singing are a big plus, as he sometimes singsongs things. He's often called boisterous, and definitely enjoys hearing himself talk. I imagine him a baritone. He's in his early 30s.

When tapping into his powers, the warmth isn't stripped away, but it becomes more performative, almost manipulative.

She appears in her 40s and speaks curtly, like a soldier, in a mature voice that reflects her age. She nags Alpheon to do his duty, and gently guides the protagonist towards solutions.

Supporting role. Ascanio is in charge of the guesthouse that hosts the protagonist. Severe, dour, almost humorless, he is usually short. Grief has made every other emotion dull, and this grief sometimes resurfaces. He's approaching his 30s, and I imagine his voice to be in the tenor range, slightly husky.
