Easy Youmu (Touhou Visual Novel)

Easy Youmu (Touhou Visual Novel)

Project Overview

Has there ever been enough Touhou Project fan works? Exactly.

Easy Youmu is a short (about 3k words) girls love visual novel where you play as Marisa who runs into a very romantically anxious Youmu in the forest. Depending on player actions, you can reach one of two endings. The plot itself is very low-stakes, since both endings lead to the two of them dating. Player actions are limited to changing the topic of conversation, which can lead to different scenarios depending on the timing. Familiarity and knowledge of the Touhou Project is not required, but it is certainly a bonus.

What's Touhou again?

As an overview, Touhou is a vertical side scroller game series with an all-female cast and anime aesthetics. Each game takes place in the same Japanese folklore-inspired fantasy universe, where the plot is somewhere along the lines of a playable character investigating a strange supernatural incident of unknown causes, all of which gets resolved once she confronts and defeats the perpetrator.

The story usually ends on a light-hearted note where everyone gets along, and sometimes you even have perpetrators from previous games taking on the playable role of incident investigator in later games.

The idea behind the game

The realm of Touhou fan works is diverse and spans multiple mediums and genres, so there’s quite a bit of leeway in creating anything Touhou-related. One perk of the series is that there’s a massive cast of characters to choose from, so there’s something for everyone.

The idea behind Easy Youmu is to write out each of the two characters in a way that stays true to the way they are originally portrayed, and depicting a light-hearted, yet convincing romance between two major characters without sacrificing either of their in-character-ness. Marisa and Youmu are not an official pairing - in fact, there is no official pairing in Touhou to begin with.

What kick-started our premise is actually an event known as the Touhou Fan Game Jam, which, in its 4th iteration in June 2019, decided to have "Pride / Identity" as the theme. Easy Youmu is actually a continuation of what was submitted at the time. It's not necessarily a sequel, but rather something that keeps the overall style of gameplay.

The game in question, "Formidable Alice", can be found here: https://kurantob.itch.io/formidable-alice
Its little cousin, "Formidable Patchouli", was produced during a later Jam and can be found here: https://kurantob.itch.io/formidable-patchouli

Easy Youmu will be available for free on itch.io, like its counterparts.

Who are we?

We are kurantoB (Lead Programmer, Co-Writer), Bakaretsu (Character Artist), Celia (Background Artist), Utsuho (Composer) and VitheSixth (Co-Writer).

We met in the Touhou Fan Game Jam community, and decided to embark on a little project together without the time constraint implied by the Game Jam formula.

We're making Easy Youmu for free, just like we would do for a Jam project. Why? Because we like it!

A few requirements...

Before you audition, here are a few requirements:

  • Please submit clean recordings with no background noises or reverb. Remember that recording under your blankets can help a lot if you don't have soundproofing!

  • Please submit a maximum of three takes by audition, one for each line.

  • Please be available for communication and live recording sessions. Our team is currently using a Discord server, and if you're selected you might as well be invited. But if you can't use Discord, let us know and we'll find another way to communicate.

  • Please don't forget to have fun when recording! Because believe it or not, it's one of the most important things.

Marisa is an ordinary human witch residing in the Forest of Magic. She usually gets drawn to incidents through her own curiosity, and is motivated by selfishness more than heroism.

In the events of the game, she is approached by a very nervous-looking Youmu while strolling in the forest and accept to spend time with her. She's not insensible to Youmu's charms, but can't help but cringe at her disastrous attempts at flirting.

She's jolly, tomboyish and confident. She enjoys teasing Youmu when she has the chance. She can sound like she's not taking things seriously, but she cares about her and don't want to let her down.

We're looking for a medium or medium-high voice.

  • [Marisa is poking fun at Youmu's attempts to sound in control of the situation.]

“Stoic people drive me nuts too. It’s hard to tease a brick wall out of their wits. But the folks who only think they’re stoic but are completely the opposite? They’re freakin’ adorable.”

  • [Marisa jokingly accepts Youmu's proposal to work as her servant, before bursting out laughing.]

“Maybe you're right, I should consider taking you in. Free personal servant-gardener-bodyguard-life-partner, you name it!" (giggles) "Sorry, I can't keep up the facade.”

  • [Marisa just endured one of Youmu's horrible puns. She's embarrassed for her, and grits her teeth before brushing it off with an awkward laugh. The name “Youmu” is pronounced “YOH-moo”.]

(thinking to herself) “No… Nobody deserves this cringe. I owe her another chance. You got this, Youmu.” (clears her throat, then addresses Youmu) "Oh, sorry! I zoned out for a bit. Haha…”

Youmu is a half-human, half-ghost in service of Lady Yuyuko, a ghost princess from the Netherworld. She acts as her gardener, bodyguard and servant.

In the events of the game, she has a crush on Marisa but is too anxious to just ask her out directly. Upon meeting Marisa, she proceeds to awkwardly flirt with her, trying to make her laugh by using very bad puns Yuyuko came up with to “help” her.

She's rather innocent, straightforward and not very quick-witted. She tries to maintain a serious upfront but fails miserably, sounding nervous instead. She will stammer a bit when embarrassed.

We're looking for a medium-high voice.

  • [Youmu takes pride in being a reliable person. She starts out confident, but grows a bit shy as she tries to approach Marisa. The name “Yuyuko” is pronounced “YU-yu-koh”]

“When it comes to serving Lady Yuyuko, I've proven to be worthy. Do you want me to show you what it's like? To have a reliable somebody at your service.”

  • [Youmu is awkwardly trying to read Marisa's feelings. She's nervous and starts stammering.]

“S-Speaking of which, there’s something I’ve been wondering. If someone has a crush on someone else, but that someone else never becomes aware of it... D-Does that mean the crush never existed in the first place...?”

  • [Youmu clumsily confessed, and is afraid Marisa accepted her feelings out of pity. She sounds a bit down as she reflects on her own case.]

“I always thought I was never good enough for anyone. My job is simple. People don't come to me for affection. I don't go to anyone for affection. The idea of having my own goal and reaching for it... This is all so unfamiliar.”
