Darkest Dungeon: Ancestor's Journal Readings
Project Overview
Intro
Hello all,
I'm a huge fan of the Darkest Dungeon and one of the things I love the most are the Journal Fragments you can pick up during your expeditions. I thought it would be a good project to compile them all together into audio form. Possibly even taking it a step further and making a video re-creating the Journal Fragments in game with the narration over it. For now though, we'll just focus on getting the audio.
Requirements
- Please have a decent mic with little to no background noise. As this will be an audio heavy project good sound quality is needed.
- You may need to switch between softer voices and louder voices to add to the atmosphere. Some characters will require shouting, heavy (almost dying) breathing, panicking etc. so don't be afraid to let out your wild side but remember to keep the audio quality good.
- Deadlines are not set in stone so don't panic and try to give a rushed performance
- Don't harass other people on their auditions. Provide helpful feedback and advice. We're all here to grow and learn, we might as well get along with each other.
- If you have any questions or concerns feel free to DM me on Casting Call Club or on Discord Matt_Man#2674
- Have fun!
Compensation
Since this is a fan project I don't have the funds to pay, but I will write you a recommendation and do everything I can to make sure you get as much exposure as possible.
Final Notes
We'll primarily be in communication via Discord, so you can either leave your tag in your audition or not and if you get the role I'll DM you on CCC instead.
One last thing,
Because of the unpredictable nature of our world I can't guarantee that this project will come out right away, might take a few months. Understand that a lot of this is a learning experience so please be patient.

Deadline
Wow. Didn't expect this many auditions. I'll be listening to the remaining ones I haven't gotten to yet. I'll be going through them and making my final decision over the weekend Again, if I think you'd be good for the role I'll DM you making sure you're still interested in the role and we'll go from there. Thank you for all the interest in the project and I can't wait for it to premier. -Matt -
Deadlines Approaching
Hello everyone, We're about a day or more away from the last day to audition, so if you're still on the fence now's the time. I'm pumped to get this project started in earnest. So far, I've actually got most of video portion done. It'll be like an audiobook, with music, sounds and images from the game in the background to match up with what's being spoken. Anyways, I'm super excited to show you what we've got done and I hope you all are too. Best of luck and thank you for all the support. -Matt -
Deadline Approaching & After Casting
Hey folks, Right off the bat, wow, there are some great voices out there. I wish I could cast you all but unfortunately, only 5 can be chosen. The deadline is coming up here in a few days, so if you want to audition for one of the roles, now's the time to do it. If you do get chosen for the role, you'll receive a message from me either on discord or CCC, confirming that you're still interested and willing to accept the role. We'll discuss the details privately. In the meantime, stay safe and keep moving forward. -Matt
Darius the Highwayman, is a (obliviously) a Highwayman. He's down on his luck since fewer people are traveling the roads and decides to risk it at the Hamlet. He comes off as gruff and only obsessed with wealth and money, but his expedition with his companions shows that he can and does care. He ends up sacrificing his life to help them escape.
I put him down as MiddleAge or Young Adult and with a slight English or Cockney accent, but it's not a necessity.
(Somewhat depressed and down on his luck) Rare are travelers on the roads this autumn, and rather than starve I pressed my last coin into the hand of one who dealt in rumors and shadows.
(Annoyed by the current state of the town) The road to this damned hamlet was a tricky one, both to find and to travel. When it revealed its ruined face, I swore had never seen such neglect, some buildings collapsed, and uncaring residents fidgeting uselessly
(With his final dying breath) I tried to play hero, to buy them a few moments...blew away one of the smaller monsters...last shot...then smashed into the wall...the big one...maybe they made it out...
Unnamed Bounty Hunter (at least according to his weapon of choice) is the sole survivor of an expedition into the Warrens. When his group encounters a strange artifact, one member touches a torch to it and summons a monster that kills everyone except the Unnamed Bounty Hunter. He has respect for his companions, Cuthbert and Boleyn, but pure hatred towards Mizir, who summoned the creature that killed the expedition.
He should come across as a shell-shocked survivor. Like he's telling this story at the bar after the fact with his drinking buddies. Recounting the details almost monotone, but bursting into rage when he thinks about Mizir.
Any accent will work as long as it is believable and consistent.
(Unable to comprehend what he is seeing) This was far beyond the crude fetishes crafted by the pig men. It looked as if obsidian had been grown and twisted into a dark symbol of worship. It cradled a pulsing red orb, glowing with malevolent light.
(Very upset that Mizir endangered the group) Cuthbert, Boleyn and I hesitated, but thrice-damned Mizir, driven by crazed impulse, thrust his torch in a hidden receptacle and thus sealed our fate!
(Recounting the events as though it was a dream) With Cuthbert slain and as Boleyn fell, I was driven by rage. I leapt and drove my axe into the creature’s many eyes. Purple ichor splashed my face and my very soul shook as it bellowed.
The Unnamed Man-At-Arms is a experienced soldier who loses each member of his expedition, one by one, until only he remains. After each death he becomes more sadden and filled with grief but resolves to "Press on" until only he remains. At which point he goes berserk and resolves that if he is going to die he will take as many as he can with him.
He is one of the older characters in the game and his voice should reflect his age. He has fought in countless battles and seen so much death and destruction. He should sound like a grizzled war hero who is realizing that his days are numbered, so he might as well go out fighting.
An English or British or even Scottish accent is preferable but not required.
(Sadden, like losing a new recruit) We dropped our bowls and hurried to him. All we could find was his spent pistol and a trail of blood leading into a maze of shadows. We press on.
(Depressed as if he lost a life long friend) I held him as his essence slipped away, another giant fallen in our mad pursuit. I am alone now, weary, but unbowed. I press on.
(Enraged by the deaths of his comrades) I AM BECOME VENGEANCE! All cultists will feel my mace, brigands fear my roar! I am outnumbered, ‘tis true - I am starved and half-mad, but as long as there is breath in my body, I will press on.
The Unnamed Adventurer was bitten by the seafolk during an expedition and his wounds begin to fester turning him into one of them. He undergoes physical and mental changes. By the end he doesn't even remember who he is or why he is there and chooses to return to the sea.
He should come off as a young adventurer who is out of his league. He encounters weird and bizarre things that he doesn't understand and makes him feel nervous about.
Any accent will work, as long as it is consistent and believable
(Confident, but concerned over his wound) They didn't last long with our torch rekindled. Alas, one bit me on the neck before I gutted it. The wound stings and tingles strangely. Our physic told me to keep it clean and covered...
(Very nervous over his wound, labored breathing) The wound is starting to fester. The flesh around it is grey, flaking and ridged, almost scale-like. As I write this, my breathing has taken on a hollow timbre and is more labored.
(Sounds almost in a trance) I cannot recall why we ventured onto land. Why did we leave when Mother Ocean provided all we needed beneath her tender waves? I will now return home, back to Her embrace…
The Unnamed Shieldbreaker was once a dancer in a far off land. She was so beautiful and graceful that she was purchased by a Vizier. However she hates her life in the Gilded Cage, and when the time came she took her chance to escape. Unfortunately during the escape, her arm was trapped under a pile of rubble and was then bitten by a snake. Forced to choose, the Shieldbreaker cut off her hand to stop the poison from spreading. No longer a "Beautiful Thing" she feels relieved at the freedom she has been given by the snake
She should come off as jaded and spiteful of her life as a "Beautiful Thing" and relieved after she cuts off her hand, as she is finally free of that life.
An Arabic accent is optional, as long as it is believable and consistent
(Disgusted) Such exquisiteness must be admired, they say. And so I am made to dance for their desperate, dust-pitted faces; for their watery, bloodshot eyes; their cracked, grinning lips. I am not a person to this debauched audience, I am an exotic wonder. I am a beautiful thing.
(Determined not to be owned by anyone) As the wagon careens along the mountain road, I make my choice. I will not go to the Vizier. I will not be this man’s prize; his plaything.
(Panicked but resolved to escape)The knife is dull, and I must work quickly. In my panic, I saw, hack, and gouge. My cries are met with the silent indifference of the dunes, the chill of the desert wind, the cold light of the moon.
