Candy and Cigarettes: Manga Dub

Project Overview

Manga Description:

Raizō Hiraga, a newly retired police officer who had been serving the elite government VIP bodyguard unit for decades, found his grandson stricken by a very rare disorder. The medical expense would cost as much as a million yen a month; Hiraga sold his residence and spent all his pension but the money is simply not enough to cover the cost. Desperate to find a job willing to recruit a retired old man in his sixties, Hiraga noticed a small classified ad looking for "kendo and judo martial artist with excellent marksmanship; up to 1M yen/month" from an "independent legal entity." And thus he begins his work as a cleaner for an assassination group, working to fight corruption in their city.

Raizo Hiraga is a weathered old man who cares deeply for his family. Specifically his grandson who is in the hospital with a specific and expensive condition. In order to pay for said bills he takes up a shady job as the cleaner/assistant for an assassination agency. Slowly he develops a grandfatherly bond with his coworker Miharu.

His voice should reflect his experience and tenure, but also his enthusiasm to fight for what he believes in. A gravely medium voice would be preferred, though the pitch can be up to interpretation.

  • (Melancholy, hoping for a better future)

"Isn't there a better job...? A job where I can earn more..."

  • (Sees Miharu with a bag of drugs)

"Are those drugs? Throw that thing away!"

  • (Explaining the situation to Miharu)

"One straight ahead, two on each side. Five in all..."

Miharu Suzukaze is a surprising effective assassin with a cold killer attitude at work, who is really just a normal girl at heart. After her parents were killed, she vowed to get revenge, thus taking up a new life as a killer.

She would have a higher pitched voice, which dips lower/more monotone for serious moments.

  • (Seriously talking to Raizo)

"What now pops? If you don't want to help, move out of the way."

  • (Casually explaining)

"I'm Suzukaze Miharu. 11 years old. My worst subject is math. Pops, help me with my homework later."

  • (Calmly)

    "Yup, I'm an assassin"

Director Kinume is a serious and calculating director of the assassination agency. After having worked for her crooked father, she realized the problems of the government and now vows to fix these problems by wiping out the people responsible.

She keeps these emotions to her chest, so a calmer medium-low voice would be appropriate.

  • (Explaining her company)

"Our firm was established as an informal non-profit organization for public welfare. In return for the high income, we ask that you observe strict confidentiality as our principle."

  • (Talking down to Miharu)

"Our guest will be leaving now, Miharu"

  • (Talking to Miharu and Raizo)

"Therefore, you two will be carrying out assassinations together"

There are many male extras including regular citizens, gangsters, as well as a few reoccurring roles in the later chapters. This role will be a catch-all for us to fill these different roles with your talented voices. Each line has a description that you can use to build your voice, though feel free to try different varied takes on each one.

  • (Shop owner talking down to an employee who messed up)

"C'mon... This is the second time. We're busy enough!"

  • (Angry gangster)

"That little bitch! She made off with our product!"

  • (Gangster who just messed up)

"Our apologies..! I never expected a little girl as an assassin..."
