Age of the Ring: Last Days of Arthedain
Project Overview
Age of the Ring is a massive overhaul of the classic Battle for Middle Earth II: The Rise of the Witch King. The mod aims to create an RTS experience that is faithful to the spirit of the Tolkien mythos, with diverse, engaging and balanced gameplay. It features dozens of new heroes, units, spells and abilities as well as new maps and a campaign following the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring. In 2020, we won Mod of the Year on ModDB! Our project is coming to a close, and we are looking to finalize a few remaining roles.
A note for auditioners:
Multiple generations are represented by these different characters, but with the blood of Numenor strong within them, age is more of a marker of wisdom and temperament than vocal quality. Experiment with that thought when reading, and avoid caricature voices!

Arvedui is a noble king, fated to be the last king of Arthedain. He commands great love and respect from his troops and fights alongside them on the front lines of the war against the evil Witch-king of Angmar. He is a serious, deliberate man.

Aranarth, son of Arvedui is a wise young prince, eager to prove himself in combat. Committed to the defense of his realm, he is destined to be its protector even after Arthedain falls, for he will become a lord in exile, the first Chieftain of the Dúnedain, of whom Aragorn would be the last.

Malbeth was a royal counsellor during the last days of Arthedain. One of Arvedui’s most trusted advisors, Malbeth was known for harbouring the gift of foresight. A wise and wizened man, Malbeth’s prophecies were heeded with much reverence, though his valuable counsel could not in the end prevent the fall of the kingdom he served. Malbeth is an older man, with a deep and compassionate voice. A possible inspiration might be the Emperor Uriel Septim from TES4: Oblivion.
Ability: Wise Counsel [upon casting an ability that inspires allies]
I impart upon thee my wisdom!
Heed my words well!
Select in combat [You are in the midst of battle!]
Send warriors!
They attack the Royal Counsellor!
Begone, fiends!
Select [outside the chaos of battle]
The Dúnedain are divided…
The Witch-king’s cold hand reaches far…
The days of our realm may soon run out.
Noble warriors of a kingdom on the brink of destruction at the hands of the evil Witch-king. The Arthedain soldiers are great warriors of strong spirit. They suspect that the end of their realm is at hand, but still stand strong while they can, and wish nothing more than to defend their lands against the enemy. Accent: British. Slight hint of a northern accent, otherwise RP.
Attack [these lines are played when the attack command is given. You are in the midst of battle!]
Drive them before you!
Hold them here!
Pierce their fell hides!
Select [outside the chaos of battle]
Do not fear the Black Captain!
We are sworn to the House of Elendil.
The Northern Kingdom shall rise once more!
Fell winds whisper…
Move [played when a move command is given]
Forth, Sons of Arnor!
In Arvedui’s name!
Keep a steady pace!
The armies of Arthedain move out.
Calm, determined. Ferocious in battle. The Lossoth are a distant northern peoples, in our case inspired by Inuit and Sámi cultures. They are known for building snow-houses, using ice-skating as a mode of transportation, and not too much else. For more inspiration, read http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Lossoth
They speak the Common Tongue, but not well. Their script has several lines written in a fantasy language vaguely based on sounds from various American native languages. These hunters revere (among other, lesser spirits) ‘Arûm’, the spirit of the hunt, their version of the Vala Oróme, who visited their ancestors a very long time ago, now remembered only through disciplined oral traditions. They refer to themselves as yninn - first-men, a word vaguely resembling the Sindarin edain, suggesting a very early encounter with the Elves millennia ago. The Lossoth generally hate orcs and have in the past worked with the ‘good-aligned’ Men of Arnor and more recently the Dúnedain, but they can and have been ‘bought’, either through promise of wealth or threat of violence, by the forces of Sauron.
Accent: ‘Native’, in a very broad sense. We want to communicate the fact that these people are the first inhabitants of a distant land largely unknown to the other residents of Middle-earth.
Attack [these lines are played when the attack command is given. You are in the midst of battle!]
Arûm is with us!
Kalû nûrinn! [Kill the invaders!]
They are unwelcome!
Ûr-tarniq! [Evil spirits!, as in ‘their spirits are of evil’]
Select [outside the chaos of battle]
Yninn.
We defend our home.
Why have you come?
The Enemy has come to our lands…
Salute [when the unit is purchased and first arrives in game]
You called for the yninn?
What do you want from us?
