A Silent Voice Chapter 1 Fandub
Project Overview
This project is a long-term fandub of the A Silent Voice Manga, meaning we will be dubbing over the manga in its entirety! This audition is for the characters who show up in chapter 1 of the manga! We will be doing the other chapters at a later point!
About A Silent Voice-
Shoya Ishida, a mischievous elementary school student, finds himself troubled by deaf transfer student Shoko Nishimiya. Despite her genuine attempts to befriend her new classmates, Shoko only proves herself to be an annoyance for Shoya and his friends, provoking them to ridicule her at any possible chance. Soon enough, their taunts turn into constant assault—yet the teachers heartlessly remain apathetic to the situation. Shoya's misdeeds are finally stopped when Shoko transfers to another school. Denying their involvement, the entire class puts the blame on Shoya. As the new victim of bullying, Shoya gradually becomes meek and reclusive, being treated with contempt and disregard for years to come. Now a high school student, Shoya meets Shoko again for the first time in five years. Still tormented by his past actions, Shoya is determined to make amends for his mistakes and confront his trauma—even if he must face arduous obstacles along the way.
About the Director-
Hi! My name is Rae! I am 19 years old and a writer as well as an aspiring voice actor/voice director. I am a big fan of the SDS series and have been since the beginning! I really am excited to dub over this entire manga because it is by far a favorite of mine! For this project, I will be the director, casting director, script writer, voice actor of Miyoko Sahara, and audio engineer until we get one, so I don't become overwhelmed with the editing work as well. I have a co-director, who you will meet if casted, and others casting directors who is helping with the choosing the cast. I'm looking forward to it and good luck!
Some rules/guidelines to note before auditioning-
- -Keep in mind, this is a long-term project, so audition with knowing that!
- Something to remember when auditioning: You will have to yell some lines... so please acknowledge that!
- -Having knowledge of the manga or show is preferred, but not required.
- -Lines will usually be due 1-2 weeks after the script for the chapter is posted!
- -Please be 16+! This manga has some scenes not recommended for people under that age as it mentions some serious topics such as bullying, suicide, etc.
- -Have a decent sounding mic, no background noise/a quiet recording space. The mic doesn't need to be professional... just one that doesn't echo/create lots of background noise.
- -Please do at least 2 takes per line with different delivery styles!
- -Please be easy, respectful, and professional to work with.
- -Please leave your discord in the comments of your audition! Our main point of communication will be on a discord server, so it is required to have a discord account!

In his youth, Shōya lived life in a constant war against boredom, often acting rowdy and mischievous in an effort to keep himself amused. Although not a completely immoral child, his stubborn pursuit of entertainment led him to become the primary bully of Shōko during sixth grade. He failed to realize how cruel his treatment of her was due to his inability to understand or empathize with her or her hearing disability.
After facing the consequences of his actions for the next five years, Shōya has become a very isolated and self-loathing person in his late teens. He has grown to deeply regret his past actions and believes himself to be unworthy of happiness. Even after befriending Shōko, he is very self-critical and doubtful at first, unsure if his desire to be her friend is genuine or if he’s trying to satisfy himself. He is also shown to be quite dense to the feelings of himself and others, having outbursts of anger or crying without knowing why. However, he proves himself to be a kind and empathetic person at his core, becoming very close with several people he would have never expected himself to. He’s passionate about the people he cares about, often willing to disregard himself if it means helping them or making them happy.
Although he still struggles to forgive himself, Shōya has learned to better trust himself and the people around him, slowly but surely opening himself back up to the world. He’s become a better person since his childhood, with his best self-shining through the bonds he’s made over time.

(Solemn, reminiscing) Back then, if we could have heard each other’s voices, everything would have been so much better.
(Soft) I have trouble looking people in the eye, so it’s easier for me to just stare at the floor all the time.
For this, you will need to be able to do her accent she has to her voice since she is deaf, so please watch the voice example included below! You will also be voicing her younger self as well!
In her youth, Shōko had a strong desire to connect with people around her. However, due to difficulties communicating, she was often met with misunderstanding, disinterest, or bullying. Her hope of making friends was symbolized to her by the communication notebook she brought to class, and she temporarily gave up this wish after Shōya tossed this book into the school’s pond. After facing isolation of both external and self-imposed varieties for many years of her life, Shōko has become a melancholic and self-loathing person in her late teens. She is plagued by guilt over what she sees as her own role in the dysfunctional situations of her past, including both her school and family life, and she has developed a tendency to blame herself when things go wrong even when she alone is negatively affected. Due to her lack of confidence in her own perceptions and desire not to be a burden, she struggles with avoidant behaviors, which ultimately exacerbate her feelings of guilt and inadequacy. However, these negative feelings are usually hidden beneath the more obvious positive parts of her personality.
At her core, Shōko is a kind and compassionate person who is rather easygoing. She is shown to be very patient and forgiving, even to her former bully Shōya, whose friendship she earnestly accepts when years later he expresses regret at mistreating and failing to understand her. She also expresses a caring and nurturing side, as seen when she tells Shōya that it makes her happy to give others what they need. Although her disability makes certain parts of her life difficult, she never feels the need to be pitied or treated specially. Being a visually focused person by necessity, Shōko has a fondness for visual metaphor and symbolism. Contrary to most people's expectations, she is rather analytical and perceptive, and she is usually quick to discern the content and subtext of conversations even when they are not signed to her. However, she tends to lack confidence in her own judgments of social situations, which causes her to highly value others' honesty, even when that honesty is harsh.
It is through her growing friendship with Shōya that Shōko embraces more of herself and starts to express her emotions more openly, revealing moments of anger, sadness, and genuine happiness. After being saved from her lowest point, Shōko chooses to confront her negative feelings and starts accepting the value in her own life even with its imperfections. After assuming this more realistic and proactive mindset, she finds greater success enriching the lives of the people around her, finally achieving her desire to be a source of strength for others.

For this, you will be voicing her younger self as well as her present, teen self!
On the surface, Miki presents herself as a kind and responsible person. Being the representative of her senior class, she likes to take the role of a leader, even during casual outings with friends. Despite her polite demeanor, Miki can act rather conceited, often judging others in a self-righteous manner. This can be seen in the way she treats her peers, tending to act nicely towards them while holding negative feelings that she won’t express until moments where she feels upset or threatened. Her self-image and how she is perceived by her peers is her greatest insecurity, causing her to put emphasis on how she looks and the efforts she makes as a student.
Because of this, Miki lacks self-awareness, not understanding the flaws in her behavior and the harm it can cause. She often denies or ignores her own wrongdoings, though it's not a malicious act. Even when reflecting on the past, she continues to view herself as a victim. Despite her negative traits, she has the capacity for genuine kindness and sincerity, which she tries to embrace towards the end of the series. In particular, she treats her friends more supportively and compassionately than previously.

We were all so worried about you. I know life can be hard sometimes, but it’s like that for everyone.
The thing is, you have to accept the bad parts of yourself with the good and just move forward.
For this, you will be voicing her younger self as well as her present, teen self!
Naoka is rather blunt about her negative feelings towards people she dislikes. Where she struggles is in her ability to showcase her more positive qualities, such as her soft and caring side, often resorting to rather rude and insensitive approaches to certain interactions. While it can be argued that her ability to confront her own negative feelings is respectable when used rationally, her tendency for rash actions and anger causes her to lash out in several instances. She has some degree of self-awareness when it comes to her own flaws and actions, even showing remorse at certain points and expressing a desire to be different, though she is hesitant to believe that kind of change is possible. It’s this belief that people can’t change who they really are that she tends to project onto several characters during the series.
Ultimately, Naoka does begin to show hints of progress towards the end of the series, seen through changes in her behavior towards several people.

It’s better to be hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.
Miyako is a kind and caring woman who’s patience and emotional strength rarely falters, even when it conflicts with feelings of anger or sadness. Left by her husband to raise two children, Miyako works hard to provide for them and does her best to be a loving and supportive mother, showing a deep care for her small family. She also shows sincere kindness and empathy to people outside of her family, especially to the Nishimiyas who she seems to have established a good connection with despite the issues between her son and Shoko Nishimiya in the past.

(Upset) I knew it. I knew something was going on with you! Do not even try to deny it!
(Worried) You boys have got to stop playing such dangerous games!
You two don't have to hang around this idiot if you don't want to, you know?
Takeuchi appears to be a rather uncaring and self-righteous individual. Soon after Shōko’s transfer into his class, Takeuchi begins to see her as a burden and is quick to hand some of his responsibility for her onto Naoka, who is also another student he should be guiding. When Shōya begins bullying Shōko, Takeuchi is aware of the situation but rarely takes action to stop him, failing to even properly explain why he shouldn’t pick on Shōko when he does bother to punish him. Takeuchi continues to ignore Shōya’s actions until the principal gets involved, where Takeuchi blames Shōya completely for the bullying of Shōko, despite the clear involvement of other students and himself as a teacher. His ignorant behavior continues when Shōya becomes the target of bullying, refusing to believe or help his student when Shōya sincerely looks to him for any assistance.
Even when he meets Shōya and Shōko again years later, his personality remains largely unchanged, something that deeply angers Shōya. Takeuchi views Shōya as a respectable man based on appearances and choice of high school alone.

I don't care about any of that. What I want to know most is how to avoid boredom.
In his youth, Keisuke was the comic relief of his friend group. His playful and rowdy behavior complimented Shōya’s daredevil mindset and Kazuki's carefree attitude, though that also meant he would get wrapped up in Shōya’s antics. Much like his peers, Keisuke refused to accept any responsibility when Shōya was accused of being Shōko’s sole bully, very likely out of self-preservation or uncertainty.

Today we jumped into the river from the bridge.
(Like an army man) Shall we begin Operation Shoe Rescue immediately, sir?!
Although Kazuki's face makes him appear zoned out or uninterested, he is actually quite the opposite. As a child, he almost always involved himself in Shōya's antics, as his daredevil mindset complimented Kazuki’s carefree yet enthusiastic attitude. Unlike his friend, he appeared to be a more responsible and hard-working student, attending cram school so he could succeed in middle school and beyond. He may also have been a member of the Boy Scouts, indicated by the text on the flag he carried around.
After helping pin Shōya as the sole bully of Shōko, the cold and condescending side of Kazuki began to show itself as he became Shōya’s primary bully, purposely doing things that he knew would make him miserable and feel isolated. This attitude would continue into middle school, where Kazuki went out of his way to tell people about Shōya’s actions.

(Annoyed) Woah!!!! Hey!! That did hurt, you jerk!
Not much is known about his personality, though he appears to be a friendly and respectful person. He politely introduces himself when Shōya accidentally walks in on him lifting, telling the young boy that he would protect him.

(Kind) Hello! My name is Pedro!
Genki comes off as a friendly and pleasant guy when Shōya first meets him, but that quickly changes after Shōya punches Genki's younger brother for stealing his shoes. Genki retaliates by uppercutting Shōya in the gut the next time he sees him, leaving Shōya covered in bruises after he is lifted into the air by the punch and lands flat on the pavement. At this point, Shōya’s sister had moved on to Pedro, so Genki isn’t seen after this.

From what is seen of Deluxe, he appears to be a mean and selfish child. His first appearance shows him stealing Shōya’s shoes. When later confronted by Shōya, Deluxe initially has a smug attitude before revealing himself to be rather sensitive when Shōya punches him in the face.
