An introduction to the techniques and theory of video production as they apply to the broadcast and non-broadcast industries. The primary emphasis will be on single-camera field production techniques and non-linear editing. This course deals with basic video production concepts and practices. Students will learn how to record aesthetically pleasing videos by applying professional lighting and composition techniques. They will acquire competence with a professional-grade camera, sound, and lighting equipment and familiarity with video and photo editing software (Adobe Premiere and Photoshop). They will apply these skills to produce high-quality video projects, including a PSA and a short film. Members of the class will evaluate and critique each other’s work, using terminology and vocabulary covered in the lecture and course reading. Students will also understand the methods of storyboard creation and the process of script writing with each in-class project.

The course is intended to introduce students to the use of Apple Macintosh computers, peripherals, and
popular communication software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat. The course will help acquire a foundation for using Adobe Software including: • Workspaces (and personal workspace)

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the role of global media as they interact with the world’s social, cultural, political, technological, and economic forces. Historical dimensions also are examined. Using major mass communication theoretical concepts as a basis, the effects of mass media on individuals and society are explored. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to explain the major effects that key technological developments in mass communication have had on society from the 1400s to the present day, describe the cultural frameworks in which media systems develop and operate on a global level, name and explain the significance of the major global media corporations, explain how the contemporary mass media operate under various political and economic environments on a global level, describe multiple theoretical explanations of how the mass media can potentially shape individuals’ perceptions of reality, themselves, and others, be familiar with key legal concepts and ethical issues surrounding the mass media, and how they vary around the globe, define media convergence and explain how it is changing the media industry and how people consume media, be familiar with current mass communication research methodology and findings, articulate—through writing and discussion—issues and controversies currently affecting mass media and their support systems around the world, investigate and challenge the power of the mass media in a society that the media helps shape, and become a critical consumer of the media.
