THE CHOCOLATE ELF

Ivan is the bartender at a well-established restaurant and lounge called “Heartbox.” Heartbox is frequented by celebrities and socialites, so it’s no surprise that the staff at the venue is known for their outstanding hospitality. Like the others that there, Ivan is charismatic, charming and friendly (all on top of being attractive). Make no mistake though, he is no pushover. So much so that the managers will let bouncers leave early if Ivan is working.

  • [Calm/intimidating] Hey there. Mind telling me what you're hiding in your pocket?

  • [Sarcastic] Let me get this straight, Devon. You're inhaling my alcohol because Avalee is standing next to a guy in a photo? Are you serious?

  • [Normal] So, what'll it be tonight. I'm assuming the usual, correct?

Hey Shu Drake, welcome to Casting Call Club! So first of all, when you’re recording lines for an audition, you have to say all of them, not just any one you choose. I notice you have a bit of a “foreign” accent. This can be a setback because most roles are looking for an American or British accent. Try looking up English pronunciation and diction exercises online, such as tongue twisters and stuff like that. Daily practice can make a big difference! Also, your acting, from the short clip I heard here, is generally quite flat. You need to put more emotion into your lines and vary the emphasis you put on certain words. Try experimenting with different ways of saying lines. I recommend submitting at least two takes per line, just to give the project creator an idea of your range as an actor. Think of the character’s background and motivations. In this line, Ivan is talking to a customer he knows well. You should sound more casual and acommodating, like you’re making small talk with a friend. Your audio quality needs work, but I understand how that can be difficult to fix without equipment. (I’m very cheap and don’t want to spend money on all that stuff either. : p ) What I did was download Audacity, which is free audio software which has several features which help with distracting background sounds, such as “noise reduction”. Also, you can adjust stuff like audio input so that the microphone doesn’t peak when you’re being loud. Also, another tip I heard was draping fabrics over any hard surfaces around while you are recording. Hope all this advice helps! Wishing you the best of luck in your future voice acting career!
