I don't usually use this site anymore, but I wanted to pause and let you know you're really damn good. Like, wow, blew me out of the water here, chief. PLEASE invest in better equipment. PLEASE. You're a VERY GOOD ACTOR, it's time to upgrade, get some XLR, or at least get a decent USB microphone. But you're absolutely selling your lines, you're a real talent and with a voice like that you'll go places.Best of luck!
thank you! i've been trying my best to get a better mic, but i generally haven't had any luck finding good ones that fit the work i like. :') do you have any suggestions?
You've got a very nice range, and while it's generic and old fashioned? The AT2020 is the most versatile motherfucker on the market, many people swear by other mics, but there's a reason it's still in the conversation all these years later. Specifically, your voice has this nice kind of gravel rasp that sits REALLY nicely at the higher end of the sound spectrum, that's where all those snappy sounds come from like hi-hats in a drum. The AT2020, with a good mixer (and look I recommend a mixer, not just an interface, do this right because you're absolutely talented enough to do so), you can get some good sound out of it. I wish I had some good examples, my last few auditions on here were a bear mostly in my falsetto and some other stuff I threw together quick, but genuinely the AT2020 you can find from your own research is a good all-rounder, and what you need for now is something that lets you experiment, so an AT2020 XLR and a Xenyx 802S will keep you under 150$, I'd recommend getting a stand for your mic or a mount depending on how you like to record (stand always if possible, it will help you deliver better), and from there it's learning how it works, plenty of amazing videos on gain staging and such, and the AT2020 is so friendly and forgiving with your settings compared to the other recommendations you might get that are more geared towards voiceover itself. I've been using it forever, all sorts of VA's use it for remote work, it's iconic and still finds its usage in mainstream stuff to this day. Lastly, pop filter, you'll need one. Those are my suggestions, it's a bit steep but to be clear, you're a very damn good performer already and if you wanna make progress quick you'll NEED an XLR, shit's a gatekeeper unless you're also a good audio engineer.
For the record, your delivery is already stellar and you have a natural voice that creates an interesting gravel like I said already, reminds me a lot of a Steve Blum or Rick Hunter-type, and I think you should play into that. Weird as it might sound? Your voice naturally hits the "ASMR area" as I'll call it here, you've got a gravel and all the people I know that work in that area always have that stellar pronunciation you seem to have, so capitalize on that! Best of luck to you, really, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next 1000%.
