(Context for Line 1- Winter is hallucinating and is explaining what she’s seeing to her best friend (and crush), Jacin.) The walls—the walls are bleeding. The chandelier, too, and it’s on my shoulder, and I think it’s staining my shoes. I can smell it and taste it, and why—(Her voice breaks. Beat.) Why does the palace hurt so much, Jacin?
(Context for Line 2- Winter is trying to get a pack of aggressive genetically engineered soldiers on her side.) I know you still want to eat us- we must be tender morsels to you. But if you choose to help us, you will receive more than just a morsel. You can feast on the queen herself. And wouldn’t that be more satisfying? (Beat.) Fight with me. I will not control or harm you. You will have your freedom.
(Context for Line 3- Winter playfully asks Jacin to help her assemble her model solar system. However, he is concerned about leaving his guard post.) I hoped you might be able to help me with Saturn. It’s the last one to be painted, and I thought I could take the rings, if you want to do the planet… (Beat.) Don’t be silly, it may be improper for a princess to be alone with a guard with questionable intentions, but there’s no rule against guards she’s known since she could walk.
