His age has begun to show, but he remains very capable and skilled, and he's also very wise, being able to give some important advice and tips to the rest of Chrom's group. Apparently, Gregor had just finished killing his previous employers by the time he met Chrom. He was attempting to rescue Nowi from the Grimleal before she was sacrificed to Grima, but he had to pursue her because of Nowi misinterpeting him as a threat.
