SM: Alice may not be on earth, but she is still with us. She is watching over Mary. She is even here with us now! You may be too proud to tell her yourself, but I have an idea to right your wrongs. Take the girl, you have been absent from her whole life. She has nobody else. 


EC: That’s why I brought her to you! 


SM: Elliot. Do you really think that young girl will flourish here? With the “old hag?” She’s got her mother’s fire. I can appreciate that, but she needs someone with a strong will, and not 30 other kids…


EC: Cora, you can’t be serious. 


SM: Do you think a person like me lies in front of the Lord?
