It was New York, Summer of 1930. There I first met that strange and interesting young fellow, August Dupin.
When we had finished reading the newspaper’s account of the murders neither Dupin nor myself said anything for a while. But I could see in his eyes that cold, empty look which told me that his mind was working busily.
I said. “A madman!! A madman!! Only a madman could have done these murders!”
