Born to wealthy merchants in Armanvelle, Melanie is a direct descendent of Kostis Dimakos and, by extension, his twin sister Thalia. They were the first kerási, a breed of ab-humans created through a magical ritual involving the sacrifice of a human and a lynx. Being Kostis’ descendent has caused all kerási to view her as a great leader and saviour of their species. But all this has done is forced her to retreat deeper and deeper into herself, terrified of the responsibilities that others have placed at her feet.
