Yakuza 0 - Kiryu vs. Kuze Dub
Project Overview
A fandub of a scene from Yakuza 0, released in 2015 by Sega for Playstation 3, Playstation 4 and PC.
The Yakuza series, aside from the first game released in 2005, has never had an English dub. With how dialog-heavy these games are, and how heavily they rely on realistic Japanese culture, plus the lipsyncing required...it's difficult enough localizing the text in English. So difficult, in fact, that there are very few fandubs of this game out there.
I want to set out to prove that it can be done, and I'll be doing that by dubbing one of the most iconic boss battles in the entire series. This is also an experiment for me as an aspiring director, to try my hand at real ADR.
Here are the requirements if you wish to audition:
- A Discord account, to keep in touch with me.
- An at least semi-professional quality, clear microphone and a recording setup with decent acoustics (no reverb) and which allows you to either sit or stand as necessary.
- Able to work within the constraints of ADR, timing your lines to the performance on cue (Assistance will be provided).
- Able to pronounce basic Japanese terminology and names with notable accuracy (Assistance will be provided).
- Able to work with a live director, who will push to get as high a quality out of you as possible, and might ask for far more takes for a line than you're used to. This also applies to being able to deal with criticism: I promise to not be a jerk, but I also won't put up with whining.
- Able to deliver your material in a fair timeframe. I understand you probably have a life and a job, but I won't wait over a month for lines.
These standards might seem a little high for an pro bono fandub. But it's important to me to leave an impression here that gets noticed. If I don't get auditions from people that meet these standards, I will extend it a little longer, but eventually I will cancel.

None of the auditions I've received for this project manage to be what I'm looking for, so I'll move to individual scouting and close this casting call. Thanks to everyone who auditioned.

8 auditions?
...Really? I've had this open for a month, and there are only 8 auditions? I laid out exactly what this project was for, I clearly defined each character, and I have other projects to my name. What exactly is the stigma here?
Kiryu needs a voice similar to his Japanese one. It needs to be sharp, crisp, deep, intimidating, dark, sexy, smooth like a knife through butter, and overall badass. It also needs to have the potential for explosive amounts of energy, particularly when fighting. Being able to sing isn't a bad trait either: Kiryu takes great pride in his singing ability (It's unnecessary for this dub, however). Two examples I can give are Kevin Conroy as Batman (https://youtu.be/gYMBwqtMht0) and Crispin Freeman as Holland Talho (https://youtu.be/BcqqS8wSBBg?t=5884).

Kazuma Kiryu would eventually be known as the Dragon of Dojima, but in his early years, he's brash, insecure, and naive. Though he's eager to prove himself to his superiors, that eagerness embroils him in a crime-laden mystery where he's framed for a crime he didn't commit, and must decide where his true loyalties lie. Like any good hero, he has a strong, strict code of honor and an equally strong sense of justice. That being said, he is still a Yakuza at heart, no matter how hard he tries to walk away from this life. He's a man of action rather than words, preferring violence over diplomacy, but only when it is justified, to protect a friend or in self-defense. He's friendly and easy to open up to those he's comfortable around, but has very little in the way of true friends. He's wise, but not all-knowing. He starts an idealist, but gradually becomes more realist over time. And he will never, ever kill. In short, Kiryu is what the real life Yakuza would say the Yakuza used to be: a man who keeps the streets clean of malicious punks, doesn't bother ordinary citizens, respects his bosses, and who the people love.
In this scene, Kiryu is hunted down by his former patriarchs after quitting the Yakuza and refusing to give up crucial information to them. He's cornered in the sewer by Kuze, who wants nothing more than a rematch after losing to Kiryu in a fistfight earlier in the game.
(on the verge of tears) It's okay. It's okay, Pops. To me... You were my... (crying out into the night) ...my true...father!!
(starts calm, rises into righteous fury) Shooting a girl is your diligence? Killing Tachibana and Oda? If you're so desperate to draft yourself a title...I'll write it in YOUR BLOOD!
(weak, in pain, arm broken) K...Kuze...so that woman...was one of yours...
Like Kiryu, Kuze's voice needs to be deep, dark, and intimidating. But unlike Kiryu, his voice should sound noticeably older and grittier, with a touch of "Godfather"-esque slurring. Also, heavy smoker. Try not to make him sound overtly evil, either: he's a bad guy, and he's scary, but he's not a monster. The best examples I can give are Ron Perlman as The Lich (https://youtu.be/FrlymHW0qU8) and Michael Ironside as Darkseid (https://youtu.be/wz3Fw4SDsds).

An ex-boxer and ruthless lieutenant in the Dojima family, Daisaku Kuze is the muscle of the three lieutenants hunting down Kiryu. Kuze can be thought of as the Anti-Kiryu. Like Kiryu, he has a strong code of honor. He has his own ideals of what being a yakuza is, follows them to a T, and will wreck anybody who gets in the way of them. This is why despite all that he does, Kiryu continues to respect him as his superior, unlike the other lieutenants. Unlike Kiryu, however, Kuze is arrogant, and his desire for fame and prestige is in a stark contrast to Kiryu's humble personality. Kuze never gives up, getting into a 1-on-1 fistfight with Kiryu no less than 5 times, determined to kill him. His grudge is that Kiryu "wussed out" by quitting the Yakuza, by messing with the family, and he doesn't enjoy losing to someone he considers less than a man. With each defeat, Kiryu's personality starts to rub off on him, and he gets softer. After their final battle, he tells Kiryu to never give up on something he believes in; even if he fails, and even if it kills him.
This scene is Kuze's 2nd fight with Kiryu, having already cut off his finger after losing the first fight.
(smug) The yakuza game, it's not like boxing. The one who gets beat down isn't the loser. The guy who can't tough it out to the end, he's the one who loses. Eh? Don't ya think? Oh yeah... I'm gonna serve your ass myself, and I'm gonna enjoy it.
(slightly pissed off, rising into fury towards the end) I'll tell you what, Kiryu. To me, a finger or two don't mean shit. Awano or Shibusawa beating me to the captain's chair? Couldn't give a fuck... As long as I'm alive, I'll keep getting back up for more. Which is why a half-ass like you...is the one thing I can't stand. (yell) NOW DIE, YOU LITTLE SHIT!
(beaten down, exhausted) Huff...hah...heh heh... You're a damn monster, kid. You just...keep getting tougher... I hope you understand at this point, kid... The only thing driving me at this point...is a man's pride.
