Atone | Indie Horror Game
Project Overview
Play as a recently deceased Adam Briar as he's forced to conquer the trauma he couldn't overcome in life, face his 7 deadly sins, and fight to find peace for his soul. Is this the afterlife? Why Adam? Is he here to be taught a lesson? Or as some higher powers personal entertainment? The only way to go, is forward.

ATONE is being developed in Unreal 5, utilizing the engine's powerful capabilities and ground breaking features, to bring a truly gritty experience to the horror community. Using the new lighting power of “Lumen”, combined with the new “Nanite” graphical advancements, the atmosphere of ATONE will feel that much more unsettling, allowing for the creation of a level of immersion we haven’t seen very often in recent years. If you enjoy brutal, gut-wrenching visuals with a deep story delving into topics of human nature, and what life means; this is the game for you.
ATONE does not look to shy away from the uncomfortable. Finding its unsettling nature in the reality of the horrors we often work to ignore, amplified and manifested in Adam's life long torment. Follow him through environments crafted from the depths of his agony, as he must navigate nightmarish depictions of places tied to his trauma, and face grotesque representations of his various mistakes.
Some environments include:
* A decaying version of his childhood home, in which his father took his mothers life in, while he was playing in the next room.
* A twisted portrayal of the police station he was questioned in numerous times throughout his life. Not only for his mothers death, but the many run-ins with the law that followed in his later years.
* A horrific, labyrinth like therapy office/hospital he was forced to seek treatment in, as he battled his pride, to allow himself to confront his past.
You may be wondering, Why are you making this game specifically? I’ll do my best to answer that.
I’ve found a certain level of peace in the process of creating ATONE, and crafting its world around the horrors of real life. I feel it tackles subject matter that not only I, but maybe people in the world, can relate to. We all do things we aren’t proud of (some more so than others), and we all pay for those things in some way. Whether it be struggling with our guilt, or even those of us who sadly see ourselves as needing physical punishment, we create “debts” so to speak that must be paid. As somebody who has struggled with his mental health, and left many mistakes unfixed, crafting the story of ATONE has given me a sort of light into myself. There are a lot of my personal struggles sprinkled throughout the game's plot, and I feel they are expressed in a way that not only benefits me, but may strike a cord with players (while also providing a quality horror experience.) I feel the concept of the 7 Deadly Sins, although I’m not religious, is an accurate categorization of the mistakes we make in our lives. I doubt there is a single person in the modern world who hasn’t committed each of them, which lends to another point I wanted to make in this project, nobody is inherently bad, or evil. We are all just people trying to figure out life, stumbling our way through, and hoping we do alright at it. The game's depiction of what comes after death is a concept I thought of many years ago, where there is no heaven or hell per se, but a sort of life debt that we must pay for our peace. Before you are granted your eternal rest, you must confront the “debts” of your life, and pay your dues. There is no heaven after. No hell. But freedom from our earthly torment. To me, that’s a beautiful thought.
ATONE, while still in early-mid development, has a planned release date of June 2024, with an hour long demo released in January 2024. The full game aims to be at MINIMUM 10 hours in length, with plenty of incentive to return and explore its environments for an even richer experience.

Martin Briar is Adam's father, and will be the "guide" of the Wrath chapter. He is manifested to punish Adam for his gluttony and alcoholism.
Martin Briar is a 46 year old, large white man, standing at 6'3 (190.50 cm). He has a full head of swept back black hair, and a short scruffy beard. He wears a red polo shirt with a pair of loose jeans, and tennis shoes. Martin is an asshole, who abused Sam as a child, and eventually murdered his mother.

Lillian Briar is Adam's mother, and will be the "guide" of the Sloth chapter. She is manifested to punish Adam for his laziness, and lack of effort in progressing his life.
Lillian Briar is a 52 year old, slender white woman, standing at 5'6 (167.64 cm).She has long, flowing brunette hair. She wears a light blue T-Shirt, and loose bootcut jeans. Lillian loved Adam, and always believed he would be a great man, leading to him feeling he let her down after her death.

Stephen Briar is Adam's brother, and will be the "guide" of the Envy chapter. He is manifested to punish Adam for his envy of his brother's successes.
Stephen Briar is a 29 year old, average white man, standing at 5'9 (175.26 cm). He has a full head of medium length hair, and lightly scruffy face. He wears a long sleeved T-Shirt with a pair of dark jeans, and sneakers. He was favored by Adam's father, and went on to be very successful professionally, and in his love life. Adam and Stephen are one good terms, talking often, but Adam never shaking his jealousy.

Detective Blake will be the "guide" of the Pride chapter. He is manifested to resemble an officer Adam have frequent run ins with in his life to punish Adam's greed.
Detective Blake is an average sized 55 year old black male, standing at 5'9 (175.26 cm). He keeps his short black hair buzzed short, and his beard trimmed to a goatee. He often opts for a full suit, though not required, and is almost never seen without a cigarette in his lips. He's a gruff, but understanding man who has dedicated his life to bringing justice to the world.

Martin Briar is a 35 year old woman, standing at 5'10 (177.80 cm). She keeps her dark hair back in a ponytail. She wears a button up shirt with a pair of slacks, and dress shoes. She was recommended to Adam by Detective Blake, but only got to see him occasionally, as it was rare he came to appointments.

Sarah Rolands is Penelope Rolands' adopted sister, and she will be the "guide" of Lust chapter. She is manifested to punish Adam's lust, and the affair he had with her while dating her sister.
Sarah Rolands is a 23 year old, shorter black female, standing at 5'3 (160.02 cm). She wears her hair naturally, often pairing it with a dark pallet of make up.. She wears a revealing cropped top, with a pair of short jeans shorts, and black boots. She was was aware of Adam's relationship with her sister, but chose to pursue him regardless. Penelope discovered the affair, and cut her sister from her life, leaving Sarah to suffer the guilt of her actions.
