The Adventures of Thomas (The WWII Era)
Project Overview
Before the beginning of the Railway Series, there was a little island off the coast of England known as the Island of Sodor. For many years, it has been a peaceful land where the scenery is majestic and it is a special place where engines can come to life...until now that is. Join Thomas and his friends as they go face-to-face in combat during the second world war and along the way learn what it truly means to be a really useful engine...but that is if they can survive and overcome hardships even in the darkest hours.

Thomas is described as being a cheeky, fussy engine. He often gets into scrapes, usually by being over eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas' life and he is soon bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line, of which he is extremely proud.
During WWII, Thomas is put into a group with Edward and Gordon. He plays as the look-out for the two bigger engines, but unfortunately gets captured by enemy troops. Whilst in captivity, he makes friends with a DRG Class 01 named Friedrich. After he is rescued, he makes the most of his time helping the enemy troops get to their locations for battle. He speaks with a central English accent.
"We mustn't give up!"
"Little engines CAN do big things."

Percy is a rather cheeky, but kind engine, and generally behaves well, except when he is getting into mishaps from being over-eager. He loves teasing the others, especially the bigger engines, such as Gordon and James, but is always brought down to earth in due course by anyone who gives him the moral to learn, especially the Fat Controller.
During WWII, Percy is put into a group with Henry and James and all three are shipped to Africa. Whilst there, Percy is put by foreign engines for his size, but he proves his worth when he assists in rescuing an LMS 8F with Henry. He speaks with a cockney accent.
"I may be small, but I'm reliable."
"I'm a true asset to the railway."

James is very proud of his splendid red paintwork. He dislikes pulling trucks and believes that he should only pull coaches. He thinks himself superior to the others and can be shallow, boastful, overconfident, naughty, and vain, particularly to those who appear old-fashioned, weak, slow, or dirty. However, on a number of occasions, he has found himself in need of help from those whom he has insulted and is, in the end, apologetic. Even before he was repainted red he was rather boastful.
During WWII, James is put into a group with Percy and Henry and is shipped to Africa with the others. He gets into a bit of a fierce rivalry with Geoffrey, an S&DJR 7F, but eventually befriends him after Geoffrey saves him from being blown up and James saves him from being captured by Italian troops. He speaks with a Liverpudlian accent.
"Mind my paintwork!"
"I'd watch yourself if I were you."

Gordon's important position as the engine who pulls the Express has made him proud, pompous and self-important, with a good reason too; he is the fastest engine on Sodor. He is extremely proud of this and is inclined to boast. He is goodhearted, always willing to forgive and uses his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble. He also has a great hate of goods trains.
During WWII, Gordon is put into a group with Thomas and Edward and is sent across to Germany. Upon rescuing Thomas, he is very hostile of the tank engine's new friend, Friedrich, mostly due to them being on opposite sides, but eventually warms up to him. He speaks with a deep, booming upper class English accent.
"Express coming through!"
"Is that the best you've got?"

Henry is generally well-behaved, but is sometimes arrogant and conceited. Henry is at heart a very hard worker, but his frequent bouts of illness hinder his work. His illness almost always has something to do with his boiler.
During WWII, Henry is put into a group with Percy and James and is shipped off to Africa. Whilst there, he becomes good friends with Ian, an LMS 8F. Their friendship is solidified when Henry rescues Ian from certain destruction. He speaks with a deep, but gentle upper class English accent.
"Don't be so daft!"
"Oh, you cannot be serious."

Edward is kindhearted, very wise, and always keen to help a friend in need. The small engines trust him to lend a listening ear and sympathetic advice. He is a hard worker too and always does his best to finish a job. If ever an engine misbehaves or acts out, it is Edward that the Fat Controller turns to in order to soothe things out.
During WWII, Edward is put into a group with Thomas and Gordon and is sent across to Germany. Along the way, Edward is ridiculed by foreign engines for his old age, but he proves to them that he can work just as well as the young engines can. He speaks with an elderly, upper class English accent.
"Be careful out there!"
"It wouldn't do to lose a friend like you."

Toby is old but wise, hardworking, and knowledgeable. However, his advanced age and design means that he is weaker than the other engines. While Toby is always ready to work hard without any fuss, he can be a bit temperamental sometimes, especially when young and inexperienced engines who are full of themselves make things difficult for him.
During WWII, Toby is put into a pair with Emily and is shipped off to France. Along the way, he comes a French Pacific named Antoine. At first, Toby is wary of the stranger, but eventually befriends the sophisticated Frenchman. He speaks with a Cornish accent.
"It's better to take things slowly."
"Right, we'll lay low here for a while."

Emily acts as a sisterly figure to the others. She is kind and compassionate, and is always sensitive to the other engines' feelings. If she wrongs someone, knowingly or not, she is quick to apologise.
During WWII, Emily is put into a pair with Toby and is shipped off to France. Along the way, she encounters Antoine, a French Pacific. At first, she is unsure whether or not to trust the Frenchman, but eventually becomes friends with him. She speaks with a Scottish accent.
"I'd take great care if I were you."
"Be sure not to stress yourself too much.

Flying Scotsman is a polite and proud engine; however he can be pompous and somewhat smug, like his brother Gordon. Scotsman has a common sibling relationship with Gordon, and enjoys teasing him, referring to him as his "little brother" to annoy him, using his catchphrase as his own, or bragging about his speed record.
During WWII, Scotsman serves as a reserve engine during the Battle of Britain, escorting people and their families out of harm's way. All the while, he is concerned about his brother and hopes for him to come back alive. He speaks with a deep, upper class English accent.
"Look out there!"
"Godspeed, everyone!"

Friedrich is a gentle giant of a DRG Class 01. Unlike his comrades, he doesn't take much interest in fighting with enemies and is more along the lines of retaining peace.
During WWII, he makes friends with Thomas whilst the little blue tank engine is stuck in captivity. Friedrich also assists in freeing Thomas and helping him in the war efforts. Being of German descent, he speaks with a German accent.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you."
"Please, I don't mean to be of any trouble. I just want to help.

Geoffrey is a rather spunky 7F. He's very head-strong, but can be a bit egotisical about his appearance, which has lead to a bit of rivalry between him and James.
During WWII, Geoffrey wasn't originally much fond of James, nor was the latter much fond of him. But after spending some time together and saving each others' lives, the two are now good friends. He speaks with a Geordie accent.
"Watch it there, lad!"
"Well, this just isn't my luck."

Ian is a hard-working 8F. He doesn't mind what job is given to him and doesn't mind getting dirty. But he mostly enjoys the peace and serenity of the countryside more than anything else.
During WWII, he becomes good friends with Henry, especially after the big green engine saves his life. He speaks with a Scottish accent.
"Well, lad. You're quite the fighter out there."
"Aye, I was built specifically for this kind of work."

Volkan is a tough CO17 tender engine from Russia. He is very intimidating and is known to have problems with his temper. He has a great distain for his enemies, but has an even greater distain of treason. It is possible that the reason for his behavior can be linked to his past of being anti-social with others and the burden of war, maybe there's a soft spot in him underneath that gruff exterior.
During WWII, he comes across the three blue engines from Sodor and is very hostile towards them, as well as Friedrich. His hostility only worsens when Germany attacks Russia. Friedrich is ultimately the one who gets through to him by telling him the story of how he was forced to fight in the war. Being of Russian descent, he speaks with a Russian accent.
"I don't take orders from little ones."
"Don't try me."

"Pah, you would not see me looking that."
"You may think you're splendid, but I outrank you in all departments."

Merlin sees himself as a hero. He is proud and confident of his abilities and in particular his special skill - the ability to make himself invisible. All he has to do is say "Invisibility on!" and shut his eyes and he is convinced that nobody can see him. He knows he was specially designed in order to be hard to see and his three funnels, which were intended to disperse his smoke and steam, are there to prove it. What Merlin does not know is that his experiment did not work.
During WWII, Merlin assists in transporting military supplies to the British army and escorting evacuees out of harm's way. He puts his wartime experiment to the test during the Battle of Britain. He speaks with an upper class English accent.
"Invisibility ON!"
"Bet you can't see me now."

During WWII, Bruno is put in charge of taking troops out to battle and moving military supplies to and from bases. He is known to be a favorite among the generals for his militaristic attitude, but many of the engines loathe his incompetent nature, especially Friedrich.
