Rural Chicago
Project Overview
INTRODUCTION
THIS IS A LIVE ACTION PROJECT. PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR AUDITIONS AS VIDEO FILES.
Hello, everyone! This casting call is for a short film written and directed by yours truly, "Rural Chicago". The film is currently in pre-production, and we are looking to cast our two lead roles.
For both roles we're paying $20/hr for the project. All payments are made through PayPal or Zelle. I expect the production to be one day and approximately 5 hours, but that is subject to change depending on circumstances of the shoot.
FILM OVERVIEW
"Rural Chicago" is a short film that will explore themes of sentimentality, coming of age, and what it means to love a place. Two high school seniors, Nick and Emma, discuss their college plans with each other, with Nick staying in Illinois for school while Emma is planning to leave for California. The two childhood friends try to understand each others' decisions by reminiscing on past experiences and sharing their hearts through conversation.
DEADLINES AND DATES
The current deadline for auditions is November 4th, 2024. Please check back regularly for potential updates on this deadline. The shoot date is TBD based on cast and crew schedules.
WHAT TO EXPECT
We will be shooting a conversation between two characters inside a vehicle in a parking lot. Please be prepared with whatever food/snacks you may want and dress according to weather!
AUDITION GUIDELINES
First and foremost, have fun -- we take pride in bringing together talents in different mediums to create something truly phenomenal, but none of it means anything if the people involved aren't passionate about their craft.
Please submit clean recordings on (no air conditioners in the background, no fans) -- please let us handle the post-production. Don't add effects to your lines.
Feel free to cut your lines to your best/favorite takes. Three is the gold standard. More is perfectly fine as well! Additionally, feel free to record whole scenes with a scene partner, if that is more your speed. However, please remove the takes you don't want to be taken into consideration.
Please submit your recordings as one .mp4 file to [redacted] or via CCC. If a file is too large to submit via email, we prefer to use Google Drive.
Please message me if you would like a copy of the full draft of the script!
REMINDER that this is a LIVE ACTION production in the Chicagoland area and talent will need to have their own reliable transportation to the shoot location.

Emma is a senior in high school about to graduate and move to California for college. She is a dreamer and romanticist, feeling suffocated by her lifelong home in the suburbs of Chicago.

Yeah. I guess I just want to be somewhere where things are happening. Where I can experience things. New things. I'm so tired of going to Target every weekend. I want to meet new and interesting people, I want to go hiking in the mountains, I want to do things. Be someone.
Nick? Do you think we're going to be different people after school?
I don't know. I guess I just don't understand. Ever since I took that vacation with my parents out West, this state has felt so goddamn claustrophobic.
Nick is a senior in high school about to graduate and stay in Illinois for college. He is sentimental, emotionally intelligent, and generally calm and good-natured.

Emma, whether you like it or not, you're stuck here. No matter how far you go. Because the people that made you who you are came from here. No matter how far you go, no matter how much you live, no matter how much you lose yourself, you will always find yourself pulled to rural Chicago, this goddamn oxymoron, because it's part of you, and everyone you love is a part of you. You're making the right choice.
My family. My friends. I grew up here, and everyone around me and every thing around me has sort of, grown with me.
Like, I'm not ready. I mean, no, I guess...I'm not sure I ever will be ready. I know this place can be boring and I know there's more world out there to explore, but...I have attachments here. Like I'm anchored to this place.
