Music and Magic!

Music and Magic!

Project Overview

Hello! I'm Avalon, and I'm looking for voice actors and a composer for my 2D animated thesis film Music and Magic!

Synopsis

Seasoned bounty hunter Ares and a young bard Melody venture off together on a mission in a forest. Ares's arrogance makes him reluctant to work with the naïve Melody at first, but when an angry pack of wolves suddenly attacks them, she proves to be more useful than he originally thought. When Melody's kind-hearted nature shines through, Ares gets a newfound appreciation for her.

Project Details

This is a ~3 minute fantasy adventure film, inspired by D&D. This is a paid opportunity, but I'm on a student budget (VAs: $4 per line; Composer/Sound Design: $175 flat rate). Payment will be done through Venmo (I'm open to other payment methods like PayPal but Venmo is preferred). Applicants must be 18+.

For Voice Actors:

  • POC are encouraged to apply for the roles!

  • Must have good audio quality

  • Record 2-3 takes per line when reading audition lines. Please keep audition on a single file with .mp3 or .wav format. Take pauses between each line.

  • Needs to be available to do possible retakes, in case of script changes

For Composers:

  • Send me samples of your work(previously composed for other projects) or a demo reel that fits the style of the film

  • I'm willing to negotiate a fair rate for the position (but keep in mind I have a limited budget)

Please provide contact details and your socials in the description. I will reach out to successful applicants with a full script and animatic, so that you can get a fuller idea of the project.

Don't hesitate to reach out here or on my Instagram alli_sketches if you have any questions. Thank you!

Thank you all so much for the overwhelming response! I'm so absolutely blown away by the support and interest in this project.

Everyone is so amazingly talented, you've made it hard for me to choose just one for each role! I'm going to try my best to get through all the submissions by next week. I will contact the selected voice actors and composer when I've made the final decision.

In the meantime, I know a couple of people who are also looking for voice actors. It would be so awesome if you lent them your voices too!

  • Composer Description

    Hello everyone!

Some people have reached out to me asking for specifics on the kind of music I'm looking for, so I have updated the Composer role to reflect my vision in more detail. Thank you to everyone who has auditioned and sent their demo reels! I will be sure to look through all of them as they come through.

Ares (Bounty Hunter)

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD
Role assigned to: Malmoo

Ares is a strong, hot-tempered man. He has a powerful but brash voice. He thinks beating things up with his sword and fists can solve all his problems. He is arrogant and full of pessimism, but towards the end of the film, when Melody shows him some kindness, he has a slight change of heart. I imagine him to have a middle aged and deep voice.

  • POC are encouraged to apply for this role!

  • Has around 11 lines

  • Will also need to record some general "battle chatter" (i.e: grunting, groaning, triumphant yelling, etc)

Voice claim: Gaston from Beauty and the Beast (but not quite that dramatically arrogant), or Roland from Baldur's Gate III

Language:
  • english

  • (mocking) I don’t need some bard to play background music for me.

  • (confidently) Back, foul beast!

  • (slightly out of breath) Well, that went better than I expected. You ARE useful.

Melody is a sweet and kind young girl, gifted with magical music talents. With her trusty violin, she can cast powerful spells ranging from strength enhancing to healing. Though young and physically weak, she is confident in her magic abilities.

  • POC are encouraged to apply for this role!

  • Has about 3 lines

  • May also need to record a few gasps and other noises

Voice claim: Robyn from Wolfwalkers, or Satsuki Kusakabe from My Neighbor Totoro (Japanese ver.)

Melody plays a violin (both pizzicato and bowing), so the violin should always be the leading instrument in the music, as if the character is playing it. I know some music composing software tend to produce violin sounds that are markedly artificial, so I would highly prefer if you have software that can generate realistic violin music, or if you are able play the music yourself (make sure the recording is in good quality).

There are different parameters for different parts of the film, but because the film is short, each section of music is also quite short. The progression of emotions and the music inspiration is roughly as follows:

Beginning: Pensive, calm, slow, cautious, simple solo violin, pizzicato (about 10s)

The bard Melody plucks at her violin absent-mindedly because she is bored, but at the same time, a wolf is sneaking up from behind her.

- Greensleeves, played by JCAR93

Baroque Violin Solo Pizzicato by Rafael Krux

No accompanying instruments

Middle: Energetic, powerful, fast paced, invigorating orchestral battle music (about 20s)

Melody casts a strength-enhancing spell on Ares to help him fend off a pack of angry wolves.

- Heist by Lindsey Stirling (I like the tempo)

- Nine Blades or Lead Your Fights from Baldur's Gate by Borislav Slavov

- Tavern Brawl from Dragon Age Origins

I should note that BG3 and DA's music are too dark and heavy for my film, but I like the orchestral arrangement with a dash of medieval fantasy.

Climax: Momentous, inspiring, emotional, warm, magical, with bright and rich timbre. (about 12s)

Melody uses a healing spell on an injured wolf, mesmerising the rest of the pack.

- Weeping Dawn (instrumental) from Baldur's Gate 3

- Eda's Requiem from the Owl House

Suggested accompanying instruments: lute, harp, kalimba, bar chimes, piano

End: Lullaby, gentle, sparkly, pizzicato violin (about 30s)

Melody plays a soft tune to refresh and heal Ares after his battle, and Ares has a subtle change of heart. This tune extends into the credits, and is a way to peacefully round out the film.

- Come Little Children (instrumental) by BassBeastJD

This should be bright and clean, but less rich and more gentle than the previous piece. Here is a test animation of the ending of my film I did a while back. This is not final; it is just to give you an idea of how the music will be used in the film.

Suggested accompanying instruments: xylophone, kalimba, piano (but I would like only minimal accompaniment, i.e. max. 2 instruments not including the violin)

The accompanying instruments are not hard and fast rules, these are just suggestions to give you an idea of my vision. I would love for the music to also have an overarching motif, but that is not necessary.

Send me a demo reel/samples of your work that can match the style and diversity in moods I want to portray. I will send successful applicant(s) an animatic with more detailed notes after the submission deadline.
