Miitopia HD: The Fandub Part 2

Project Overview

What is Miitopia?

Miitopia is a lighthearted RPG released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. It is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. The story goes that you(r Mii) is a lone traveler that comes across a town. Soon after stopping by, the Dark Lord shows up. He is out to steal every single Mii's...face. It's a lot less morbid than it sounds, for anyone unfamiliar with the game. That might not sound THAT bad...but other than their favorite color, a Mii's face is the only way to be able to distinguish themselves from each other! A crime worse than murder...in all seriousness, the game consists of you travelling across the land, defeating monsters, collecting faces, and stopping the Dark Lord. Very few of these characters have actual names. Why? Well...one of the main draws of the game is that you can cast any Mii you want for any role! You can cast anyone you want as the protagonist, the Dark Lord, and pretty much any other role! (You get the idea.) It's difficult to imagine, so perhaps you would like a trailer for the game? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yru6HJnkDBwThe reason this fandub is happening now, for anyone unaware, a Miitopia port for the Nintendo Switch was announced in February! The deadline for getting the voice actors is the release date for the game, in late May.

What will this fandub be?

Miitopia is an awesome game, but one thing it lacks is voice acting. For all dialogue, the "voices" for the characters are just incoherent babbling with text. Think Animal Crossing. Though it goes without saying, this fandub will be on the Nintendo Switch version and not the 3DS version. It will be a full-story fandub, along with the small cutscenes between levels and ellipses at the Inns. The only thing that will not be dubbed over is the small Persona-esque dialogue during the levels, between fights. Actually...I barely need to explain it! I'm currently working on and publishing episodes as we speak. Look it over, and consider whether you want to lend your voice to this ambitious project. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLik-2j5cendcfTHgvvIzHZsb3FOd-6qD0 Keep in mind, I haven't published all the episodes as of writing this, which is on June 23rd. I'm multitasking and finding voice actors for the next few steps of the way while wrapping up editing on the first part. But anyway, this project is unrelated and not sponsored by Nintendo. This project will be made for fun. It was and will not be paid for, and also will not accept sponsors, monetization, or money in any way.

Unique Roles

I could just pick some iconic, funny, or goofy Miis to fill the roles, but I know that'd probably deter some people. And so that's why...if you get casted, you get to pick your character! This will be a very unique casting for a very unique game. That doesn't mean that you won't get any sort of instructions for your character's voice, though! I also ask that you have someone in mind that your character would be. If it's someone specific, or if you're impersonating another character, I'd like for you to say it with your auditions!

Minimal Requirements

  • Be at least 13 years old
  • Have a decent quality mic (it can even be a phone mic, just don't have something that sounds like a tin can and a string)
  • Don't have any background noise for your audition
  • Have Discord
  • Be open to constructive criticism, and be able to work with other people
  • Be able to meet deadlines (they will be very flexible, but they will be there nonetheless)

Recommended Requirements

  • Have a professional mic (Blue Snowball or better)
  • Play through the entire Miitopia game (so you know everything that happens, know what you'll be expected to do and say, and don't get spoiled.)
  • Be okay with cartoon violence and brief crude humor.

Miscellaneous + Extra Stuff

This is the second casting call for a full-game dub of Miitopia. The reason I didn't do it all at once is this is a very large game...easily a 12-hour experience! For this part, I'm casting the characters for what happens directly after the demo of the game. This includes the rest of Easin Hills and the area of Neksdor (for those who haven't played the game, yes, it's a play on "next door"). Like last time, most of the auditions are sorted by appearance and not signifigance with a few exceptions! Like I said, even though you get to choose your own character once you get casted, you will still get their ingame description in quotations for the first paragraph, my own personal description for the second paragraph, and some general voice direction for the third which will sometimes provide a link to an already existing voice I would recommend you to base it off of! There are tons of people here, so i would seriously recommend going for multiple roles! It gives you a better chance at getting casted, and if I like 'em, you may even get casted for multiple roles. So go nuts!

  • The deadline is a few days away

As the deadline for this part of the project draws near, I wanted to say a few things. First, we are on track to get 100 auditions for this project before casting ends. I'd like to say, whether this is your first time auditioning for this project or not, thank you for the immense support you've shown me in these past couple casting calls. Not everyone gets this kind of following! Speaking of which, if you don't get casted, don't worry! I listen to each and every one, and odds are if you don't get casted, it's due to the fact that someone was just better suited to the role. Some of you auditioned for both this and the last casting call I did, so I truly thank you for your dedication. This is far from the last time that I'll need extra voice actors for this project, so stay tuned! By the way, if you do get casted, I will PM you a Discord invite for the project server. From there, you'll get to know your fellow voice actors for this and the previous part. I'll go into detail there! Once again, thank you so, so much for lending me your voice.

Yep, they're back again, and this time I need 3 more of them! They're the protagonist's friends, teammates, and helpers. And they journey together to stop the evil Dark Lord! Out of all the people that audition here, 3 people will get casted.

I don't exactly want to give you any direction for this role, as to not risk them sounding similar. But don't worry! I still have some suggestions. I want a large range of voices to pick from. When I see these guys, they remind me of characters out of an anime. A heroic, but still lighthearted voice is what I'd go for. Once again, I'd use the first 3 teammates from part 1 of this dub as reference, and also use the description from the first one too.

https://www.castingcall.club/projects/miitopia-hd-the-fandub

Also, keep in mind that each character has one of 7 personalities: Kind, Energetic, Laid-Back, Cool, Stubborn, Airheaded, and Cautious. They also each have one of 9 "Jobs" (or classes if you prefer): Warrior, Mage, Cleric, Thief, Pop star, Chef, and now with part two they added 3 new classes: Cat, Imp, and Scientist! My recommendation is to have which personality and class you'd like in mind, and revolve your voice around that. There are multiple teammates and each one plays a signifigant role, so why not audition?

  • (First confused, then sees the protagonist in trouble, eager to help) "How did I get here...?...Ah! Let me help you!"

  • (After the protagonist explains the situation, then eagerly volunteers to join) "So you're off to save the world, huh...? Can I join you?"

  • (This is going to be closer to the actual way the teammates get introduced; Showing up at the inn that they're staying at, eager to join.) "Whew! Finally made it! Sorry I'm late. I'm (insert name you'd like to use). I'm a (insert job you'd like to use)!" (You can see the jobs above in the character description for reference)

King of Greenhorne

"Greenhorne's king. A much-loved gentle giant with a large appetite."

My Boy...just kidding! The king of Greenhorne is seen in a cutscene whenever you go into the castle for story. At first, when the protagonist comes to the castle and warns the king of the Dark Lord, he doesn't believe him. But he instantly regrets that because...after he expresses his disbelief, his face immediately gets snatched by the Dark Lord! After he's saved, his mind is immediately changed and offers to help after the main character warns the princess. From there, he goes from more of a lead character to a supporting character as the love triangle between the rest of the royal court unfolds. However, you still shouldn't hesitate to audition! He still plays a prominent role.

For his voice, I expect a deep voice in the low range for him. This is for 3 reasons: One, his appetite not only makes him wider...ahem...but he's also taller and bigger in general. Two, he's a king, and most kings or kingly figures typically have a deeper voice. And three, since he has a daughter (the princess), he's supposedly an old king. But I don't want him to sound too old or senile, since we want him to have authority. And considering how much he eats, I doubt he'd live that long to be considered "senior." I hope this paints a picture of what I'd want.

  • (When the protagonist and he first meet; Greeting the character) (Formal) "Welcome, traveler. What business have you here?"

(Once the protagonist explains to him the situation with the Dark Lord) (Doubting) "And this miscreant stole the people's faces, you say? (Expressing his disbelief) Pfft! We don't believe it. Of all the tall tales..."

  • (His face then gets stolen; After the team gets his face back) (In shock) "Oh, thank goodness..." (After realizing he's been saved) "The royal countenance is restored!" (Overly joyful; expressing his gratitude; I don't want you to shout or scream this, but be overly expressive about it) "THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! ACCEPT OUR ROYAL GRATITUUUUDE!!"

  • (Literally popping in out of nowhere in the princess's room when he hears her talking about wanting to be with one of her childhood friends, one of whom she is not "betrothed" to.) (Lecturing in a fatherly way) "Now, now, child...you must forget about that chap! You are betrothed to the Prince, after all! Is that clear?"

Princess of Greenhorne

"Fairest in the land, the king's only daughter [who] harbors a secret love."

The princess of Greenhorne and the king's only daughter. She subtly expresses her love for her childhood friend, the Besmirched Noble's Son, and the first time she and the protagonist meet, she asks them to check on him in town. But it turns out she's supposed to be in love with the prince of Neksdor, and every time she expresses her love for the noble's son she gets shut down by either the king or the prince himself. Eventually, though, she does get her wish!

Considering she's a princess with a secret love, she must either not have enough confidence or is never in the right spot to formally express it. Therefore, I'd like more of a shyer, gentler voice in a medium-medium high tone. Actually, she reminds me of Princess Peach in a way, so that might be a good character to base her off of. Keep in mind that I do want a softer voice, but I don't want her to be straight-up whispering or doing ASMR. Try to be more natural!

  • (First meeting the protagonist when they walk into her room; Intrigued) "And who might you be?"

  • (When the Protagonist tells her the Dark Lord attacked the town of Greenhorne; Worried, scared for her childhood friend) "The Dark Lord went to Greenhorne? What for...? Is my friend OK?!"

(Seeming to just realize that the protagonist is still there) "Oh, I'm sorry...I'm worried about my friend in town. Would you check on him for me?"

  • (Her father corrected her when she expressed her friendship to the noble's son; Obviously meant for him, but she can't get up the courage to say it to anybody but herself) "But...father..."

"The prince of Neksdor and the princess's fiance. Arrogant, but loves his mama."

The prince of Neksdor, and the part of being "arrogant" isn't played lightly. Considering there's an obvious "good guy" in the love triangle between him, the princess, and the Noble's Son, he's meant to be the obvious "bad guy." That's a fairly strong term, but he's basically the guy you're supposed to root against while he and the noble's son vye for the princess's love. The only reason he's her fiance is because he is the only prince nearby.

I want his arrogance to be played up to the highest degree. Everything about his behavior screams "bratty," so I want that portrayed in his voice, too. I don't want him sounding like a child, but I want his voice to be in the medium-medium high range. Sometimes he treats himself like a hero and monologues like one, one that deserves the princess's love (even though that couldn't be further from the truth). During these times, get in the mindset of what a kid would talk like if they were make-believing being a hero, but pretending like they actually are!

  • (Waiting for the team to escort him to the castle; Impatiently grumbling to himself) "Grrr...keep me waiting...*grumble grumble grumble*" (I'd like you to replace the grumbles with more...actual improvised grumbling. Something short like "how dare they" or "such insolence")

(When they finally show up; Demanding) "You imbeciles! Take me to the princess this instant! And don't you dare dawdle!"

  • (Monologuing while the group escorts him back to the castle) "Why was I waiting out here alone, you ask? I was attacked by a monster. I made a valiant attempt at vanquishing the brute. But my pathetic servants couldn't handle it...Bah! They left me no choice but to flee from battle..."

(When the monster shows up, out of shock and fear) "Yeeeeek!"

  • (At the end of the love triange campaign, seeing the princess confess her love to her childhood friend instead of him and right before he runs out of the room; Furious and on the verge of tears) "Grrrr...Mamaaa!!!"

"Grew up with the princess, but now rarely gets the chance to see her."

This guy is Awkward with a capital A when he's trying to fight monsters. However, other than that, he actually goes out of his way to be polite to everyone, especially the princess. He's very expressive about his love for the princess, his childhood friend, and he's part of the love triangle that is act 2 of the Easin Hills area. The Princess's face ends up getting stolen, and the fact that he tries to fight a monster to get her face back is the thing that convinces the king he's the better suitor for his daughter.

I was stumped on the kind of direction I'd like to give for this character. However, the more I rewatched footage of the game, the more he reminded me of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. So that's what I'd recommend you take inspiration from, maybe making him sound less...stoned, if that makes sense. But if you can't do a Shaggy voice, that's completely okay! I'd like a medium-medium high range. Other than that...just go for it!

  • (First seeing the son, trying to find a mother's child after they've gone missing; Calling out to them) (Filled with resolve) "H-here goes..." "Where are youuuuuu?!"

(After hearing the child call out for help) "That voice!"

(Seeing the monsters that are about to attack them) (Timidly) "I-I've got to do something..." (Trying to make himself sound braver than he actually is) "You!...You get away from her!"

  • (After the protagonist and his team steps in to save the child) "Thank you so much for your help."

(When the protagonist tells him that the princess is worried about him; Elated) "The princess...is worried about me...?"

(Complimenting the protagonist while also self-depricating) "I turned my back and all this happened...and the way you handled those monsters...that was incredible! I was as useful as a chocolate teapot..."

  • (Out of surprise and anger, when he encounters the prince. They then have a quarrel over her love) (Out of surprise and anger) "And who are you supposed to be?" "The Princess can't marry a dork like you! I won't allow it!"

"Used to cause no end of trouble until the Great Sage sealed him in a lamp."

Apparently, a few years ago, this genie was a troublemaker that kept tricking and stealing from the town of Neksdor. The Great Sage eventually had enough, and sealed the genie in a lamp. Now, after that, he tempts the desperate prince of Neksdor after he gets rejected by the princess with a wish in exchange for his freedom. The prince obliges, and after he reveals it was a trick and flies off, the protagonist needs to seal him back into the lamp to return peace. After being threatened with the lamp, he agrees to give all the gold he stole back and change his ways!

Due to the low pitch of the babbling voice that the genie is given while he's speaking, I'd like for you to mimick that and give me a low tone. He's portrayed as laid-back, and even a bit cocky when confronted by people trying to get him to right his wrongs. That is, until he changes his ways, of course. I imagine him sounding almost like Flynn from Skylanders, but actively trying to be a jerk.

  • (When the prince finally releases him from his lamp prison; Triumphant) "Wharharhar! FREE AT LAST!!"

(The prince asked him for his wish, he says this in response; Blunt) "What, you believed that? I was totally kidding! Lying, kidding...same thing. Anyhoo...it's been too long. Time to party!"

  • (He steals gold from the town's celebrity, then rushes off to the underground cave. This is when the protagonist finds and confronts him) "What're you lookin' at?"

(When the protagonist demands the gold back) "Pfft, come off it, kid! This whole desert is my turf! What belongs to the townspeople belongs to me! Now run along home!"

  • (The protagonist pulls out the lamp, the one thing that could seal him away; Shocked, nervous) "Oh, snap! The lamp!...H-heh...there's no way you could know how it works..."

(The Protagonist starts saying the incantation, and he begs for him to stop in exchange for all the gold) "Waitwaitwaitwaitwait, hold on! HOLD ON! I'll give all the treasure back! Every last coin!" "Please, I'm begging you!"

(After the protagonist does stop; Worn out, apologetic) "Haa...haa...haa...Look...I'm...I'm sorry. I'll return all the treasure to the townspeople. Wharhar.

"She loves to sing and dance, but not when crowds are watching."

Part of Neksdor Town. Like the carefree guide in the first part, she doesn't do a whole lot of guiding, but she does do a whole lot of dancing!

She, like most of Neksdor Town, doesn't have much for me to direct you on. I'd like her to be in any tone or range, whichever you think is best for the character. I imagine her speaking more whimsically or mystically, if that makes sense. She also says words like "Shallaranran," which I don't think is based off of any language. However, every time she says them, they're accompanied by a music note. So whenever she says something like that, I'd like you to sing or hum it. I'll leave the melody up to you, since I want to know your interpretation! Every time there's a music note during one of the lines, since I can't type it here, I'll use an asterisk *. Keep it in mind!

  • (Greeting the protagonist when they first walk into the town; cheery, pleasant) "Shallaranran... Welcome to Neksdor! Shallaranran! Sing with me now! A one, and a two... Shallaran, shallaran, shallawallaran!"

  • (Her face ends up getting stolen, and she's thanking the protagonist for their heroic act; grateful) "Ahh, that's better! I missed this face!"

"Secretly wants to take up dancing. It's never too late to start!"

This town is full of strerotypes. To be honest, looking back on it, all of them do! If you interact with this guy, he'll ask for a moment of your time. If you do...may the Guardian Spirit have mercy on your soul. The whole "dancing" thing is never really talked about other than in his bio, other than the fact that at almost all of his encounters, he slips in a comment about how "nice the Dancing Guide looks today."

Considering he's a stereotype of an old man that talks a lot without even considering the fact that he might bore you, I want you giving a voice with a senile ramling old man in mind! Also, get ready to talk...a lot. (Seriously, this guy has so much dialogue I was considering giving him a "supporting" signifigance!)

  • (First meeting the protagonist, immediately jumping into an old tale; Immersed) "You there, lad! Hear an old man out, will you? (After he says yes) Ohh, our land was in a terrible plight! It was terrifying! The genie of the lamp awoke from his slumber...ran amok stealing our belongings, he did! But then along came Great Sage Joshua! Sucked the menace right back into his lamp. He'll not see the light of day again for some time, I reckon! I just hope he learned his lesson..."

  • (Calling out to the protagonist when he gets back, after all the town's faces got stolen; Worried) "You there, lad! Hear an old man out, will you? Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse...now the Dark Lord's gone and made short work of us! It was terrifying! Took the townspeople's faces clean off. Fffwap! Makes the genie of the lamp look like a pushover!"

"A shrewd girl who sells wares at high prices with the help of her father."

She and her father, who she passes off as sick (but really isn't), stands outside with him. When someone interacts with them, she'll beg them for money to help her sick dad. She'll give you an MP candy, the item that restores your MP mid-battle, in exchange for 500 gold. To put it in perspective, you can buy MP candy at the inn for 100 gold. If you say yes, the transaction will actually take place and you'll get stiffed out of 400 gold...all while she celebrates with her dad, who seems a lot better than he did a few moments ago. If you say no, she'll openly cry about it. I'd feel bad if her prices were a tad lower.

For her voice, while she's trying to sell the candy, I'd imagine her to try and openly make herself sound more helpless; While she's celebrating, she should drop that act. The way I'd recommend you doing that is making your voice even higher-pitched. I want you to use a voice in the high range regardless, of course. Whenever she mentions her sick father, I imagine her putting special emphasis on that.

  • (First meeting the protagonist, trying to convince them to buy a candy for her "sick" father; Desperate-sounding) "Sir! My father is very ill! Please, will you buy an MP candy from us? Only 500 gold!"

(If they say no; Feigning tears) "Waaauuuggh!"

(If they say yes; Celebrating) "Aww yeah! We finally sold one, dad!"

  • (Both of their faces get stolen; When the protagonist gets both of them back; Thankful) "Sir! Thank you so, SO much, from the bottom of my heart!"

"Rakes in the money by feigning illness. Amazed at his daughter's schemes."

He stands outside with his daughter selling MP candies, the main item to restore MP in the game. The way they do this is with him pretending to be sick, and his daughter guilt tripping the poor soul who interacted with them into buying it...for over 5 times its normal selling price. A lot of his voice lines are just...coughing. For most of his speaking lines, he breaks character. This is because he and his daughter either made a sale or during the moments after the protagonist returns their faces when they get stolen.

I imagine his voice to be in a medium-medium low range because of his age. It's implied that he's at least middle age because he has a daughter, but because she's so young, I don't think he's a senior. Since I imagine this isn't their first day doing this due to the daughter's comment, "we finally sold one, dad," he was probably feigning illness for a while. So I imagine his voice has gotten a little raspier over the days!

  • (Feigning a cough; Sick-sounding) "*cough* *hack* *cough*"

(If they sell a candy; Devious; No longer sick-sounding) "Cheers for that! That'll be 500 gold, please!"

  • (When the protagonist returns their faces after they get stolen; Grateful) "Cheers for that! Just once- and ONLY once- we'll give you one for free." (Special emphasis on the "and ONLY once")

"Scours the world in search of treasure, but never finds a thing."

In THIS part, they don't have more than a couple lines. They're similar to the Great Sage (but far less prominent) where they occasionally pop in for an interaction. You first see them in Neksdor town, pondering about who knows what. From the audition lines, I know it doesn't look like they have many lines in total, but I don't want to add lines from future parts so I can see how you embody the character with the normal amount of lines!

Being an explorer, I feel like they'd have a more scholarly voice. Almost like a nerdy type. How I'd recommend you do it, is, even though any vocal range works for this character, I'd make it slightly higher pitched. I'd also add a little nasal undertone, without making it sound stuffed up.

  • (The protagonist first comes across him/her; Deep in thought) "Well, I never! This is exceedingly strange. I should have been right on top of it...hrrrmmmm..."

  • (Actually talking to the protagonist this time; fawning over trying to find treasure) (First talking to themselves again) "Finding treasure is no easy task!" (Noticing the protag standing there) "Oh! Hello. Explorer (name you'd like to use), at your service! Self-proclaimed."

"Sick of her husband never taking anything seriously."

Last part, there was also a couple in the town of Greenhorne. However, this time...the couple here is the exact opposite. This is the wife part of the role, and she keeps getting on her husband's case about not taking anything seriously. This is quite literally all they're ever seen doing, and even when the Dark Lord steals her husband's face away...they hilariously keep arguing even though the other side of the "debate" can't speak. I'm sorry about the lack of audition lines. She does have more lines, mind you, but none of them are that different from the one displayed here, and I don't think it would showcase anything different compared to if you just have the one to say.

I'd prefer her voice in around the medium range. She's clearly being sort of snarky, everything from her word choice to emphasis on those words, and her idle animation of her stomping her foot. Needless to say, I'd prefer if you keep that in mind while coming up with her voice! Other than that...get a bit creative!

  • (Comically arguing with her husband; irritated) "Did you even listen to a word I said? || I SAID, this genie of the lamp's being a real nuisance, isn't he?! || You just don't care about any of this, do you?"

"Fed up with listening to his wife prattling on. Needs a vacation."

Last part, there was also a couple in the town of Greenhorne. However, this time...the couple here is the exact opposite. This is the husband part of that role, and he keeps needing to put up with his wife's lectures. This is quite literally all they're ever seen doing, and even when the Dark Lord steals his face away...they hilariously keep arguing even though he can't speak. By the way, if you noticed the vertical lines separating the sentences for audition line 0, that's because each is the response to the corresponding sentence in the wife's line 0, seen just above.

I'd like his voice around the medium range. The months or years he's had to deal with her has obviously worn him down, so I want his voice to sound more fatugued. Other than that, I say I want to know your take!

  • (Comically arguing with his wife; exasperated) "Oh, give me a break! || Is he? It's none of my business! || Look, just stop getting on my case!"

  • (After he gets his face back...and the first thing he sees is his wife nagging at him again) "Oh, give me a break! Are you STILL giving me flak? I was happier when I was a monster..."

"A wealthy celebrity who just can't seem to stop getting richer."

When the genie of the lamp gets freed from his lamp prison, he obviously wants to go after the target with the most to lose...and the protagonist, after walking into Neksdor for the first time, sees her overly aggravated at the fact the genie stole all her gold! She then enlists for their help, and does end up getting her gold back. But, shortly afterwards, her face, just like many others in the town, gets stolen! The only people that the Dark Lord's attack leaves with their face is the old man, the explorer, and the wife character of the couple. However, she does get that back too!

Even though it's never revealed how she gets all of her gold or what she's known for...I imagine her being some sort of actor or a model because of her overly sparkly and showy getup. In either of these cases, I'd like her to say many of her lines with an overly dramatic flair, really over-exaggarating her own emotions! Other than that, all I can really recommend is you trying out whichever range you're comfortable with and experiment a bit!

  • (Fawning about the genie's attack, PRESUMABLY not realizing the protagonist arrived) "Oh, the humanity...the genie of the lamp attacked us! And he made off with all my hard-earned gold!...you look like battle-hardened warriors. Could you get my gold back for me, please?"

  • (When the protagonist returns her face; Overly relieved) "It's back! I can feel my face again! I'm indebted to you, truly I am."
