Mewtwo Strikes Back: Japanese Movie Restoration Dub

Mewtwo Strikes Back: Japanese Movie Restoration Dub

Project Overview

"The people at Warner also gave us some hassle over the script. According to them, the Japanese original does not distinguish clearly enough between the good guys and the bad. Such a movie would not be successful in a multiethnic country like the United States, they insisted, because the viewers would not know who to identify with and who to cheer on. In other words, the heroes and villains needed to be identified clearly."

~Kubo Masakazu

Some may know by now that the western releases of Pokémon: The First Movie went through heavy changes to its script, to change the motivations of its prominent characters, as well as the overall message and morals of the feature film's story.

Many also have went on to realize the tragedy of this mistake, as the film was quickly disregarded by many critics as an overdone 'good versus evil' plot made simply to promote the video games it was based on.

What had been lost in translation, however, was a moving story about finding one's place in the world which followed the tragic and misguided Mewtwo coming to terms with his own existence.

This non-profit fan project is a means to restore the script of the original Japanese film, line-by-line in English. Various impressions may be required, alongside some personal flair for some.

A sympathetic and misguided antagonist, looking to prove his worth in existing.

I'm looking for something emotional yet intimidating. Something calm and collected, yet ready to explode at any moment.

  • "Who am I...? Why am I alive?!"

A frightened and confused Mewtwo, about to lay waste to the laboratory he was created in.

  • "I was created by humans, but I am no human. Yet, as a created Pokémon, I am not just a Pokémon either!"

Mewtwo, breaking free of his restraints at the hands of Giovanni, ending their partnerships.

  • "Don't give me orders!"

Mewtwo hostily rejecting demands from Ash.

Mewtwo as a child, during his incubation. Able to interact with the other clones through a telepathic link, he befriends the human clone Amber ("Ai" in Japan) before having to watch her fade from existence.

Young Mewtwo has a much higher voice, and us filled with a childlike wonder and naivety. You must also be able to convincingly simulate crying, but try not to overdo it.

  • "...Human? Pokémon? What are those? Which one am I?"

A young Mewtwo, asking Amber/Ai questions about life after first gaining his sentience.

  • "Why do you have to go?"

Mewtwo to a fading Amber/Ai, not prepared to lose someone for the first time.

  • "The tears... they aren't stopping... I don't know what to do! Ai, come back, please!"

Mewtwo's plea for Amber/Ai to return, not able to comprehend death as of yet...

Deceased daughter of Dr. Fuji and friend of the young Mewtwo for a brief period of time. She's quite lighthearted and happy, and understands her situation with a grim yet peaceful acceptance. She's a brief guiding light for the young and confused Mewtwo, and helps answer his many questions the best that she can.

She is called Ai in the Japanese version, and is called Amber in western releases of the prologue seen on DVD extras. Which one she will go by in this project has yet to be decided.

  • "You can talk, so you might be a human too. Or maybe I'm actually a Pokémon!"

    Amber/Ai teasing the young Mewtwo.

  • "Everyone here, including me, are copies! That's why we aren't one, we're two!"

Amber/Ai explaining to Mewtwo why they consider themselves to be 'two'.

  • "Thank you for your tears... but please don't cry. You're going to live! Stay alive for me, okay? I'm sure it'll be fun."

Amber/Ai's final words to a pleading Mewtwo as she fades away.

Mewtwo's creator and father of the deceased Ai. Driven by his own grief, he attempts to bring his daughter back to life with science. He's a gentle yet broken soul, consumed with a sad desperation.

  • "Ai... what are you talking about with the others? My precious daughter..."

Dr. Fuji talking to his daughter's holograph.

  • "What do you think of this Holograph? Isn't it beautiful? I've reproduced Ai's conscious patterns electronically."

Fuji happily sharing his progress with his concerned and doubtful wife.

  • "We've created the strongest Pokémon in the world... Our dreams..."

An injured Dr. Fuji, lying against the wall as his creation, Mewtwo, obliterates the laboratory and everyone in it.

Wife of Dr. Fuji and mother of the deceased Ai. Mrs. Fuji speaks with a meek, hushed tone, full of sadness over the loss of her child. She refuses to condone nor give in to her husband's attempts to undo the past, and finds immense pity and shame in seeing him try.

  • "What do you think will come out of doing this? She's gone, dear... our daughter won't come back."

Mrs. Fuji pleading for her husband to let the past go.

  • "I... I don't want to live a life controlled by memories... this is goodbye."
