Artaban and the Quest for the King
Project Overview
Premise: Upon returning home from war in 1918, Col Blackwood, a UK Army officer, is reunited with his family, whom he has not seen in nearly 4 years. It’s Christmas Eve, and while he would relish a quiet night at home, his children want a bedtime story. He obliges and reads them a story of the fourth wise man. In this story, Artaban, a magi, and the fourth wise man, goes in search of the newborn King to present treasures along with his kinsman. Along the way, he is challenged by various circumstances and his 10-day journey turns into the quest of a lifetime.

"That is true! Every faithful disciple of Zoroaster knows the prophecy of the Avesta and carries the word in his heart. 'In that day the Victorious One shall arise, and around him shall shine a mighty brightness, and he shall make life everlasting, incorruptible, and immortal, and the dead shall rise again.'"

“No, sir. I have heard tell that he is a poor Hebrew exile who makes his home here. He walks the road at night, when it is cool. I see him every night and greet him from my home. He acknowledges me with a nod of his head, but never says a word. Even still, I feel as though I know him well.”
(Off - Said as hurrying by) “Come sir, the execution is about to commence. You don’t want to miss this! Follow me to the Damascus Gate.”
He is an elderly man who, like many others, lives in and around Babylon. He is well-known in the area and collapses one night under a palm tree, requiring Artaban to choose between continuing his quest to Jerusalem or providing aid to the man; aid that may result in him losing precious time to meet with his other wise men and trek together to meet the baby King. He presents Artaban with the critical information that the King he seeks is not in Jerusalem, but in Bethlehem.

(Emotionally) “Now may the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob bless and prosper the journey of the merciful, and bring him in peace to his desired haven. But stay; I have nothing to give you in return—only this: that I can tell you where the Messiah must be sought. For our prophets have said that he should not be born in Jerusalem, but in Bethlehem of Judah.”
He takes counsel with Artaban in Alexandria, Egypt, and as all seems lost on the journey, he helps instil in him a confidence and a ministry that will hone his quest for the King.

“To doubt is human. But to live in the strength of your faith is divine. Your journey has been fraught with obstacles that would have stopped any other man; but you have persevered. I fear your test is only beginning, my son. It is foretold in the prophesies of Israel that the King whom you are seeking is not to be found in a palace, nor among the rich and powerful.”

“You there. In the name of the Emperor I command you to move aside.”
“You will move aside or I will THROW you into the street and take whatever I may want that you are hiding within.”
“What has any of this to do with our quarry. She is to be sold into slavery as she cannot pay her father’s debts. She is fortunate to not face execution with those other three right now.”
