Hilda Hughes: An Institute Story (Fallout 4 mod)

Project Overview

I'm creating a mod for Fallout 4 called Hilda Hughes an Institute Story. The mod follows the head of the Robotics Division, Hilda Hughes, and her research into the Prototype Synth Project. The PSP occurred around 100 years before the game is set and used brain scans created before the nuclear war to create early synths with personalities based off those scans. Below are descriptions of each character along with a selection of lines. At the end of this description is a link to sample scripts with more lines for each character, these scripts also include additional direction which might be useful. The more lines recorded, the easier it will be for me to decide if you suit the role. Some roles have already been cast before I discovered this site, so only parts described below are available. For each character I have indicated how many lines they have. A line is defined as 150 characters, which is the longest the game will allow for its subtitles. Some lines may be as short as a few words. This is mod of a game and I don't make any money from it, so won't be able to offer any compensation for roles, unfortunately. No knowledge of Fallout is necessary, but it might help. It's less important for auditions, but when it comes to final auditions each file must be a 44100Hz, mono channel .wav and should be named with the first few words spoken in each line. I'd like audio quality to be at least as good as mine in the explainer video. Although it says $0 payment, some price may me negotiable for the larger parts, but I really don't have very much spare because I'm only a student.

Harding has five lines.

Dr. Steve Harding was a junior scientist who worked under Dr. Richard Wilson and Dr. Jo Smith to perform brain scans on the pre-war citizens of Boston. These scans would one day be used to create the first synths. Harding is less serious than Wilson, dealing with the difficult situation of the Great War using humour.

  • I’m just loading the programme… it’s all done. Ready when you, Jo. Are you sure you want to do this?

  • I have to ask you again, Jo. Are you sure you want to go through with the scan? With your health there’s no guarantee you’ll survive.

  • There’s even less guarantee our tapes will survive or even be playable in the future. We’re losing things every day with all the excavation.

Hank has four lines.

Hank "The Tank" Spencer is one of the characters viewed in the memories. He is a former professional boxer who retired following a serious alcohol abuse problem. His drinking and gambling has bought his marriage to the very edge. When we see Hank, he is watching a boxing match on TV. His wife is about to leave him. When filling out his forms to have his brain scan, Hank described himself as "American born and raised."

  • What? Shut up, I’m trying to watch the fight!

  • Go on! Hit him! Yeah! No, not like that!

  • God. Fucking. Damn it! I had a hundred bucks on that fight! These punk kids...

Wilson has five lines,

Dr. Richard Wilson was senior scientist at the Commonwealth Institute of Technology before the Great War. He worked under the supervision of Dr. Jo Smith while performing brain scans on pre-war citizens which would one day be used to create the first synths.

  • All right, that’s everything set over here. I’m just filling out your information. Are all set Steve?

  • Not appropriate, Steve.

  • It’s been an honour working with you, Dr. Smith. Please take your place in the chair.

Smith has nine lines.

Dr. Jo Smith was a scientist at the Commonwealth Institute of Technology before the Great War. She was a pioneer of the theory behind creating synthetic lifeforms and her research was used in the Prototype Synth Project which saw the creation of the earlies synths with personalities. Along with junior scientists Dr. Richard Wilson and Dr. Steve Harding, Dr. Smith supervised the creation of memory scans of various Boston citizens which were used as templates for early synths.

In the years immediately following the war, she took part in the excavation below CIT which created the Institute. Towards the end of 21st century, she began to develop a brain tumour from radiation exposure. In order to ensure her legacy lasted beyond the war she scanned her own brain. The strain of the procedure killed her. When we see Smith, she is preparing to have hair brain scanned.

  • The Commonwealth Institute of Technology has done too much good work for it to be lost to nuclear war.

  • This is the best chance our research has of being passed down, un-doctored, to future generations of scientists.

  • Just think, one day one of my descendants could make fully self-aware androids from these memories.

Hogarth has 147 lines.

Hogarth Hughes is husband to Hilda Hughes and Deputy Director of the Robotics Division. Hogarth suffers from delusions has become convinced that danger lurks around every corner and that he will die at any moment. For unknown reasons, Hogarth believes that in the event of his death his body will be rebuilt in the last bed he slept in, at the exact moment he slept in. This means that if he dies he will, in his own words, “loose his progress” and have to “start again.” He always carries an enormous amount of water with him and keeps food secreted around their room. He can behave manically and erratically and this is a source of constant stress for Hilda. Actors must be able to play both 'manic' and 'lucid' Hogarth

  • Hello there, I don’t think we’ve met. You look awfully thirsty, have some water.

  • Am I alright? Am I alright? There’s death everywhere. And you ask me if I’m “all right?”

  • You just don’t understand, Hilda. This is the only way to live your life! This is what it truly means to survive!

Garry has six lines.

Sgt. Garry Richards was a soldier in the American army. Shortly before his brain scan he was removed from his post fighting invading Chinese forces in Anchorage, Alaska, after an altercation with a senior officer. He was posted to guard an emergency supplies bunker near military base Sentinel outside of Boston. He spends his days alone in the bunker, talking to himself and messing around on his computer terminal.

  • How the hell did I get stuck with a dead-end post like this?

  • All my buddies are off fighting the Reds and I’m stuck guarding the emergency supplies.

  • Maybe I should mess around a little bit, change the password on the computer again?

First thing to note: the glassess in the below image are not sunglass. They're regular glassess. Thet just appear dark in the Creation Kit. Also, no one's necks are bloody. Again, the CK just makes it look like that.

Hilda is the largest part with 293 lines.

Hilda Hughes is the Director of the Robotics Division in the Institute and serves as the protagonist of the Institute Story mod. She has had a passion for robotics and for synths since she was a little girl and that passion has stayed with her all her working life. Her current passion is the Prototype Synth Project which was run by her Division over 100 years ago. Hilda is currently researching this project to find out what she can learn about the history of synths, the Institute, and life before the war. In addition to this, Hilda is also concerned about a missing synth which starts off as the secondary focus of the mod but comes to the forefront once all prototype memories have been viewed.

When talking about her work, Hilda has a tendency to become over-excited and tends to ‘baby’ staff working below her. When explaining a premise to the player she will often talk down to them, assuming zero knowledge, and take on the tone of a school teacher talking to a pupil. In addition to her work, she also has to take care of seriously unwell husband, Hogarth. Hogarth has become convinced that danger lurks around every corner and that he will die at any moment. For initially unknown reasons, Hogarth believes that in the event of his death his body will be rebuilt in the last bed he slept in, at the exact moment he slept in. This means that if he dies he will, in his own words, “loose his progress” and have to “start again.” He always carries an enormous amount of water with him and keeps food secreted around their room. Hogarth is a source of great stress and frustration to Hilda. She loves him a great deal, but is getting to the end of her rope caring for him.

  • Ahh, so you’re Father’s father are you? Interesting. You’re a little… younger than I imagined but I suppose that’s to be expected. I suppose we should cause you ‘Grandfather’ haha

  • You know I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't love you, Hogarth.

  • This isn’t any kind of life. These hour-long naps are wasting most of your days, and the water you’re drinking!
