LOTTERY EPISODE #5

LOTTERY EPISODE #5

Project Overview

SPIKED EGGS : Deliciously twisted, darkly comic tales with a foot in both the present and the reimagined past

This is audio theater. Season one will consist of 10 stand-alone episodes. We celebrate richly-layered sound design. We celebrate quirky characters, and the situations they get themselves into. We celebrate the work of the actors who join us to create these characters and their worlds.

EPISODE 5  "LOTTERY" - A farcical dramedy involving a one-of-a-kind wine bar/dog-grooming salon, winning lottery tickets, a rude truck driver, and bickering friends who learn what happens when greed, distrust, and the unlikely secret in a pink Princess purse get in the way of their aspirations.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:  In addition to this audition, we will be reaching out directly to actors on the CCC site who flourish in character work. You are a special group and we're interested in you. We've scouted you out. We've listened to your submissions to other projects. You will eventually hear from us. If it doesn't work out for this season, we will keep a roster of potential actors for Season 2. If character work is your love, if you feel comfortable occasionally working in improv, please, please reach out to us.

Part of our decision making in casting an actor is whether the actor would be a good choice for another character in a following episode. For instance, we are hoping that the actor cast as Santa Nicola (bad ass gang boss of the elves)  would be a good candidate for, say, the role of a rural midwestern farmer in Episode 2. The idea is to pair episodes in a way which really highlight the range and talent of our VAs. As such, we are looking for serious VAs who are interested in working with us on multiple episodes. We are invested in creating an acting troupe for the project.

Disclaimer/Content Warning: This project contains the occasional mild profanity and some amount of violence now and then. Episode 5 " LOTTERY" is a farcical dramedy set in current times. The podcast as a whole could not be considered suitable for family listening, but there is no gore or excessive bad language.

OUR SCHEDULE:  OUR PRODUCTION SCHEDULE IS TIGHT.  The audition period will take place from the morning of January 22, 2024. through to the morning of January 26, 2024. We will strive to keep up with reviewing submissions each day, so that we will reach a firm decision on each role by January 26, 2024. All actors who are cast in roles will be contacted via the CCC messaging system and Discord by January 26, 2024. and will be given a script at that time. We must receive back your final recordings by the morning of February 5, 2024.  If you cannot meet this schedule, please do not audition for this episode. We'll be glad for you to join us at another audition later in the season.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

OUR REQUIREMENTS:

1) Strict adherence to the deadline. Please take this seriously. If you do not respect our deadlines, you will not be cast again.

2) The audition submission: can be an MP3 or a WAV, but it must be clean. Any background sounds, echoes etc will automatically disqualify you. We're also making casting decisions based on the sound quality of your audition submission. The quality of your mic makes a difference to us. Please advise us of your equipment setup and DAW system you will be using when you audition.

3) Final recordings:  Must be submitted as one raw WAV file.  Please don't add any compression, noise reduction or special effects to your lines.

4) Please be available to provide re-dos/pickups: We will do everything we can to work around any issues. If we simply can't make something work, we will need your help in providing a pickup.

5) We communicate through:  Discord, WhatsApp  and email are our preference.  Discord will be important for you to collaborate with the other cast members.

6) You must be 18 years or older to audition

A COUPLE OF EXTRA NOTES:

Spiked Eggs is not an animated series. Please, no cartoon voices.

Performance clips: After Episode 5 is launched, each cast member will receive a clip of their performance for their portfolio. As we mentioned above, sound design is of primo importance to us. The clip we give you will most definitely stand out on your sample reel.

Go For It !    Really ... When performing your audition takes, have fun ! Use your skill and imagination. We've indicated in the roles where there is room to play. We're giving you permission to come up with something ... a stutter, a lisp. If it makes sense to you, given the description of the characters we're casting, give it a shot. We want to get a sense of your creativity. Just make sure that it makes sense for the character. Make sure to edit out those takes you don't want us to hear. Give us your three best takes if you want ... or do it in one take. It's up to you.

SPIKED EGGS WEBSITE: Once the episode is launched, all of our cast will receive credits on the episode's webpage in our show notes.

  • WE APOLOGIZE FOR NOT SENDING INDIVIDUAL MESSAGES

Frank and I had every intention to get back to each and every candidate who submitted to us. For the past seven auditions, we have made sure that we did contact everyone individually. Now that we're right smack in the middle of production, it's impossible for us to be able to do that. I regret that. I appreciate the hard work and time you all put into your submissions. Rest assured we have both listened to every single submission , and we always will. We're just not able to express to you individually how thankful we are to you. The audition for Lottery is officially closed. We've reached out to those actors who have been cast. Thanks for understanding. Jane

  • LOTTERY AUDITIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

Whew, this is a tough one. There are a lot of good auditions submitted for these three women, which makes my heart happy ! Frank and I are going to have to deliberate over this. We'll make our decisions by the end of the day and we'll get back in touch with everyone over the next few days. Have a good weekend.. and thank you again , Ladies. Stay warm and healthy, Jane

Early to mid-30s. Single. Excitable. Impulsive. A dreamer.  She and her friend, Grace, are paralegals in a major law firm.  It’s a tough job. They work hard and are subject to the whims of their bosses, which grates on her. She’s beginning to wonder if it’s a dead-end position but has no plans to leave, as yet.  She and Grace play the lottery religiously. They hope against hope that it’s their ticket out of their drudge-filled jobs and the means to open up a pet-grooming/wine bar establishment, called Pups’N’Sups.  Maggie has had relationships but is single now. Probably her ex’s initiated some of the breakups.

  • Maggie is talking excitedly to Grace and fantasizing about their apparently having won the lottery. MAGGIE: Can you believe it? I’m still pinching myself. Our ship … our beautiful 14-karat-gold, no, rhodium-coated, [row-dee-uhm-coated] ship has finally come in. Sailed straight into the harbor. GRACE: Our ship? MAGGIE: (ignoring Grace) I’m going big. I’m ditching my tiny apartment, first thing. Gonna buy a house. A huge house... Gated community. Super exclusive ... Vacation home, too. Down the Shore. With a big pool. Gotta have a pool!… And a car.

  • Maggie reacts angrily when Grace, after their lottery numbers are drawn, says she forgot to buy a ticket: Maggie: What’s with you, Grace? You stroking out? Got an aneurism? First, you forget to buy the lottery tickets. Now, you forget your fifty-dollar water bottle in my car. … What’s next? You gonna forget to dress? When I pick you up for work tomorrow, you coming to the door in bra and panties?

  • Hurrying to respond to a lawyer’s demand, Maggie bumps into a slightly opened drawer in Grace’s desk and makes a shocking discovery. Grace is not present. MAGGIE: Ouch! You forget to close the desk drawer, too!? (she tries to close the desk drawer, but with no success.) Why won’t this damn thing shut? … (she struggles some more, pulling the drawer back and forth, and sees a business sketch) Aww, Pups’N’Sups. I still think it’s a good idea. (she grabs an envelope in the drawer and finds the winning lottery ticket, which Grace claimed she didn’t buy) Wait. … Why, you sneaky little …! Forgot to buy the ticket, my butt. You lied to my face! You’re holding out on me! ... (mocking tone, mimicking Grace) I’m sorry. … I made a mistake… Bullcrap! … Pull one over on me, will you? Well, my friend, I’ve got a surprise for you.

Also early-to-mid 30s. Single. More composed than Maggie. Calculating and analytical, she thinks things through. She can be snarky if annoyed. She’s already thinking about bailing out of the law firm but hasn’t told Maggie. While their friendship means a lot to her, she won’t hesitate to move on to another job if it’s a better opportunity. More focused on her career than Maggie, she figures she’s as smart as the lawyers she works for and is toying with the idea of going to law school at night and joining their ranks. Grace was engaged once several years ago but broke it off when she realized the traditional route of marriage and kids wasn’t right for her then. She’s dated around since, and had a few serious relationships, but nothing else close to marriage.

  • After Maggie scolds her for “forgetting” to buy a lottery ticket, Grace is alone in Maggie’s car looking for a water bottle. She coughs, smells her breath and makes a startling discovery: GRACE: (groans in disgust): Onion bagel. God, my breath stinks. Please have gum. Please! …Yes! … (Grace takes a stick of gum and unwraps it. As she does so, something she sees shocks her) A “princess” bag. When did you get so girly, Maggie? … Hmmm… What does a princess keep in her little pink bag? ... Huh? September fourteenth. … Four. Seventeen. Thirty-two. … What? No way … You lousy phony. Yelling at me. You bought a ticket, didn’t you? …. You bought a ticket without me.

  • Grace and Maggie are arguing over a pet-grooming/wine-bar business, they planned to open but never did, causing Maggie to lose a lease deposit. GRACE: How many times have we been through this? We weren’t ready, Maggie. Too many loose ends. The liquor license. The groomer. The zoning. MAGGIE: It was coming together. We coulda made it work. GRACE: If we were real partners, yeah. But you never told me you were gonna sign that lease. Remember? … Partners don’t do that.

  • Later, Grace calls out Maggie as Maggie storms off when it’s revealed Maggie spitefully shredded Grace’s winning lottery ticket. GRACE: Go on. Walk away. That’s right … Real mature. You owe me fourteen-point-eight million. (muttering to herself). What kind of idiot shreds a winning lottery ticket? … (spies the recycling basket near her desk). Hey. Wait a minute … I got tape. (Grace picks up recycling basket. It’s empty). They never empty my recycling basket this early. (looks around the room) Where? Where? Where? (Then, as if she’s found the answer) The big bin. In the corner.

Maggie and Grace’s co-worker.  Mid-40s. A tad naïve. Maggie and Grace have kept her at a distance, yet she’d still love to be part of their “gang.” She is jealous of their friendship and their plan to open a business together. She particularly annoys Maggie. Tries to avoid confrontation but will get snarky herself if pushed against a wall.

  • Gertrude is trying to enter a ladies’ room which Maggie and Grace have blocked from the inside to have a private conversation: GERTRUDE: Hello? Hello? Who’s in there? Something’s blocking the door. I need to get in. MAGGIE (calling out): Go away, Gertrude. Use a bathroom on another floor. GERTRUDE: But I work on this floor. I want to use this bathroom. MAGGIE: Well, you can’t! Just get lost, Gertrude. GERTRUDE: Is that you, Maggie? What are you doing in there? You can’t block the door.

  • Later, Getrude is exasperated she tries to explain that the alternate bathroom Grace sent her to also was out of order.: GERTRUDE (calling after Grace): I wish you people would get your stories straight.

  • Later on, Gertrude is peeved when a panicked Grace asks if she saw whether a maintenance man emptied the recycling bin for the area: GERTRUDE: I don’t know. He doesn’t report to me. … There a problem? Aren’t you and Maggie cozy with Maintenance?
