Criminals of Isla Numus (A DnD Actual Play Series) Prequel Episode
Project Overview
At Session Zero Heroes, we believe in the power of storytelling through tabletop roleplaying games and use a wide variety of systems to create these stories, which we share through the podcast medium. From hilarious to emotional, our stories and themes come in all shapes and sizes and help us to create amazing series and one-shots for your listening pleasure!
We have published a variety of series from long-form (10+ episodes) to one-shots (5 Episodes or less), all of which have featured unique, homebrewed, original stories told through tabletop roleplaying games. Some of these have already featured vocal talent from right here at CCC. We've had an incredible time featuring these amazing voices, and we love working with the community here at CCC. We'd equally love to have you join us and feature you in this upcoming prequel episode of Criminals of Isla Numus.
This was our second major series that, with this prequel episode, will air over the course of 52 episodes! It's been a crazy ride with some wild ups and downs throughout with the story taking on a life of it's own that I, the DM, could never have imagined. With the help of the players we were able to create what I believe to be an incredibly unique story with an emotional and epic ending.
With your help I would love to be able to give some background to this world I spent so much time creating alongside the players!
Role: Military Leader / Trusted Confidant (Male)
Berthold is the backbone of Isla Numus, a man who carries the weight of a military force on his shoulders without letting it crush his spirit. He needs a voice that commands immediate respect: deep, resonant, and steady. However, he isn’t a rigid statue. When speaking with the King, his tone shifts from "officer" to "old friend," revealing a warmth and a dry sense of humor. Think of a veteran who has seen it all but still has room for a laugh before the battle begins.

“How dare you break into the King’s warchamber!”
(Speaking to soldiers) "We rise up for our homes and for our families, for everything we’ve built for ourselves! We rise up for ISLA NUMUS!”
(Shouting to soldiers) “BRING OUT THE BATTERING RAMS!”
Role: Ruler of Isla Numus (Male)
The King is a man clearly out of his depth. While he likely enjoys the luxuries of the crown, the pressure of a crisis sends him into a tailspin. We are looking for a performance that captures nervous energy and frantic pacing. He should sound a bit "flighty" or ditzy, perhaps his voice pitches up when he’s stressed.

(Nervous) “Has there been any word from the Thieves’ Guild? Their expertise and capabilities are imperative to winning this fight.”
“(Sighs) I suppose that will certainly help. Perhaps we can try to contact the Assassins…”
“Stay your hand Berthold! This is the break we’ve been hoping for!”

(Short of breath) “Wait, please! I come with an urgent message from the Thieves’ Guild!”
“Your majesty, Silversong and Strongpaw have already infiltrated the college and have engaged in battle with Bartruvian.”
(Saddened) “Strongpaw is… dead your majesty…”
Role: High-Ranking Thief / Aarakocra (Female)
Silversong is a calculated, high-ranking member of the Thieves' Guild. As an Aarakocra, there should be a subtle "avian" quality to the performance, perhaps sharp consonants, bird-like trills, or a slightly shrill/whistling undertone to the vowels.
Note that much of her dialogue is internal monologue; the actor should deliver lines with a focused, reflective quality.
Technical Note: An echo effect will be added in post-production to many of her lines to signify her thoughts.

(Slightly melancholic tone) “So long my friend…your life of greed and want is no more.”
“I am a friend amidst the shadows and I am here to help.”
“Tell them what you want, I don’t care. We in the Thieves’ Guild have always been villainized by this city and taking down this wannabe dictator wouldn’t change that.”

(A tone of superiority and confidence) “A fine speech indeed Commander Berthold (Chuckles). Now let me offer my words in retort.”
(Announcing to the masses) “But after today you will know me by a new title. Lord Bartruvius GOD of Isla Numus and whatever lies beyond the Great Sea!”
(Incredulous with a hint of terror) “But, but, but this cannot be. I was promised I would become a god…”

(Commanding his team) "The rest of you procure a hiding spot and prepare to ambush the sorcerer on my mark. Go!”
“(Chuckling) Just concerned citizens with a bit more training than your average guards.”
“What about…Blankspace?”
Role: Engineering Specialist (Male)
Zeke is the brains behind the gadgets. As an engineering specialist for a secret police force: Blankspace, he should sound precise, intelligent, and perhaps a bit distracted by his own inventions. Even though it’s a small part, the voice should convey a sense of technical expertise, someone who is more comfortable with a wrench or an automaton than a sword.

“The machine has been disabled chief!”
(Surprised) “Chief! The machine! It’s being portaled away!”

Role: Magic Specialist (Female)
The mystical counterpart to Zeke. Karria handles the arcane side of Blankspace’s investigations. We are looking for a voice that sounds composed, ethereal, or academically sharp. She is the person the team turns to when things get "weird," so a sense of calm confidence in the face of the supernatural is key for her few lines.

Role: Legionnaire Recruit (Young Adult Male)
Brody is the character everyone loves to hate. Think "Draco Malfoy" energy: entitled, snivelling, and arrogant. We are looking for a voice that sounds like it belongs to someone who thinks they are better than everyone else, likely with a sneering or possibly nasally quality. He should sound like the type of person who would step over a comrade just to get a head start, perfectly capturing that "rat-like" disposition.

“I guess we’ll be working together. The names Brody.”
(A little suspicious) “Seems pretty convenient that they left the roof clear…”
“Mistress, I have reason to believe that McGriddle and Sauce are double agents.”
Role: Legionnaire Recruit (Young Adult Female)
Marleen is a young recruit looking to join the fanatical Legionnaires. This is a smaller role, but she provides a grounded perspective on the group’s initiates. The voice should sound youthful and eager, perhaps a bit naive to the dark reality of the "Total Replacement" she is signing up for. Open to various interpretations, but should contrast with Brody’s more abrasive personality.
