Batman: Gotham's Dark Detective Season 1
Project Overview
Batman: Gotham's Dark Detective is a non-profit fan audio drama. Season one consists of nine episodes ranging from twenty to thirty minutes each (usually about twenty to twenty-two), plus nine one-to-two minute shorts that fill in gaps or build character development. There are many characters available that can suit all availabilities, character preferences, and vocal abilities. Season one follows Batman as he investigates a series of monthly murders in Gotham, along with stopping dangerous plots from members of his classic rogues gallery. This is, admittedly, an ambitious project. But it is one built on a lot of passion and a commitment to the best and most professional project possible. I hope you will join me. Have fun and good luck!

Good evening, Master Bruce. I took the liberty of preparing dinner for you, should you choose to eat before you don the cowl.
Vengeance blackens the soul, Bruce. I've always feared that you would become that which you fought against. You walk the edge of that abyss every night, but you haven't fallen in and I thank heaven for that.
Master Bruce, BATMAN, You have to listen to me, what would your father say if he saw you like this, please, please stop this rampage.

I promise you, however dark and scary the world might be right now, there will be light. There will be light, Bruce.
Nine months ago, Joker was cremated. I pressed the button and burnt the evil bastard myself. And then, we waited. Gotham braced itself for the inevitable power struggle. But it didn't come. Crime actually fell. Deep down, I knew war was coming. I was just waiting for someone to pull the trigger.
(Angry) She's my family! My DAUGHTER! She's all I've got. I never should've trusted you. Never!
Stephanie Brown is the daughter of the late Arthur Brown who is, unbeknownst to her, the Cluemaster. Stephanie ends up living with Bruce Wayne and eventually becomes Batman's sidekick. Stephanie is friendly, but also forceful and authoritative when acting as a vigilante.
Stephanie Brown appears in six episodes.

Sheesh. You'd think I'd never gone up against a psychotic hostage-holding martial arts master who wants to kill Batgirl before.
I don't know how to thank you for this, Mr. Wayne. Why are you doing this for me?
One day we'll finish you once and for all, Penguin -- you and all the other loathsome criminal parasites! We'll wipe you out like the vermin you really are. And then this will be a good, safe, clean city -- a place where children can grow up free from your corruption and filth!
Harvey Dent is the District Attorney for Gotham City, and one of the few public officials that isn't corrupt. He is Bruce Wayne's best friend, but has an uneasy appreciation for the Batman. He is not yet Two-Face, but the cracks are starting to form. His bad side, Big Bad Harv, will come out mid-sentence when he becomes angry. So there are times when lines will transition between Harvey's normal voice and his Two-Face voice. He is also warm when around friends but a formal politician when with the public and coworkers.
Harvey Dent appears in six episodes and one two-minute short.

(Two-Face) All men are guilty … and innocent. Which makes justice nothing more than a flip of a coin. The outcome, unpredictable. That is, unless the system is corrupted
Harvey Dent: You aren't Bruce Wayne. Jim Gordon and I, we didn't strike a deal with Bruce Wayne./Two-Face: And it's sure as hell not Bruce Wayne waiting on the rooftops each night./Harvey Dent: This is who you are. See, we get it, "Bruce." It's not the face you're given.../Two-Face: It's the face you choose.
Yes, and I'm glad to say that another one of Rupert Thorne's criminal rings has now been broken. As I stated in my re-election campaign, I will not rest until Gotham City has been de-Thorned once and for all!
Victor Fries is normally the supervillain Mr. Freeze. But after making a promise to his late wife Nora, he turned his life around. He sought treatment at Arkham Asylum and was rehabilitated. Now he is a rookie police officer with the Gotham City Police Department. Will this new Fries really last, or will be revert to his former self? The voice I envision for him is something akin to Michael Ansara in Batman Beyond. He is still somewhat cold and robotic, but he now has some emotions.
Victor Fries appears in eight of the nine episodes, one two-minute short, and one short that is just over a minute.

Mario Perlman, as my first act as an officer with the Gotham City Police Department, I am placing you under arrest for attempted murder. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.
Nora Fries is the late wife of Victor Fries. After becoming afflicted with a fatal illness, Victor locked her in cryostasis. She has remained there every since. While Nora is deceased during the events of the series, there are a series of shorts that will be released between episodes to build on story points and character development. Nora appears alongside then Mr. Freeze in the very first one which is of her final moments with him. The voice actress for this role should be able to sound sad and weak/sickly due to Nora's condition causing that.

I won't let you destroy yourself anymore. I wish I could have told you sooner.
You cannot change fate, Victor. But we can make the most of what we have. I can feel that I don't have very much time left. Soon, I will exist only in your memory.
I love you, Victor. With all I am, and all I will ever be.
Detective Ellen Yin works for the Gotham City Police Department. She is one of Commissioner Gordon's most trusted, and has an iron-will against corruption. Her character is not much unlike her debut version in The Batman (2004).

Detective Bennett has also been kidnapped by Joker. He was subjected to intense psychological torment and then exposed to unstable chemicals which completely mutated his body and mind.
Edward Nigma, aka The Riddler, is one of Gotham City's most notorious supercriminals. He is highly intelligent, and he knows it, leading to deep narcissism. He is determined to prove his intellectual superiority over Batman. Nigam has an obsessive compulsion to use riddles as an integral part of his crimes, and they often provide Batman with what he needs to find and capture him.

Batman, it has not escaped my notice that you have failed to arrive at my challenge in Chinatown. Hurry along detective, I like to avoid winning by default whenever possible.
It's impossible, I tell you! Impossible! My trap was perfect! HOW DID HE DO IT? I have to know! Somebody tell me! It's not fair! There was no way, I tell you! No way he could have gotten out! Somebody tell me! Do you hear me? SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW HE DID IT! I have to know! I HAVE TO KNO-O-O-O-OW!
Is that what you believe? Well, how do you know what to believe, Batman? Maybe I'm not giving clues at all. Maybe you're seeing things that aren't there. But then again, maybe I am giving you clues. I could be giving you a clue right now, couldn't I?
Harley Quinn, formerly Dr. Harleen Quinzel, is the love interest and sidekick of The Joker. She developed an infatuation with him through his manipulations while treating him at Arkham Asylum, and abandoned her practice to join him in his criminal ways. Now she is just as insane as those she used to treat, but Batman still believes she can turn her life around.

You know, for what it's worth, I actually enjoyed some of our romps, but there comes a time when a gal wants more. And now, all this gal wants is to settle down with her lovin' sweetheart.
It soon became clear to me the Joker, so often described as a raving, homicidal madman... was actually a tortured soul crying out for love and acceptance. A lost, injured child trying to make the world laugh at his antics. And there, as always, was the self-righteous Batman. Determined to make life miserable for my angel. Yes, I admit it. As unprofessional as it sounds, I had fallen in love with my patient. Pretty crazy, huh?
Mister. J wouldn't like it if you failed me, would he?
Hugo Strange is a psychologist at Arkham Asylum. He played a key role in the rehabilitation of Victor Fries and continues to act as a trusted mental health professional to him and others. But with Strange, things are not always as they seem.

Your presence creates these animals. Like germs they spread. You created the environment that allowed the germ to mutate, to become stronger. Look at the Joker. Would he even exist if not for you? It must be depressing: all your sacrifices and yet you are the one to blame!
The tears of a clown, the rage behind the leer. Tonight, I merely glimpsed Joker's peculiar form of madness.
There will be other opportunities to peer behind the mask, Batman. For if you think you have defeated Gotham's ultimate criminal mastermind... think again.
Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, is a Gotham City mobster. He operates the Iceberg Lounge while simultaneously being the head of almost all of Gotham's black market. Oz comes from a wealthy family. His nickname is Penguin due to his small stature, waddle-esque gait, and deformed appearance. Years of bullying have left him with an extreme temper, but also a high regard for loyalty. He often speaks with a Cockney accent, a New York/New Jersey accent (like in The Penguin series) or very properly but with a bird-like squawk. Any of these are acceptable.
Oswald Cobblepot appears in three episodes and one short.

Calvin Enders is a detective with the GCPD. Transferring to Gotham from Georgia, he has taken on a lot of high-profile cases since moving to the largest and most crime-ridden city on the east coast. The GCPD is working hard to determine whether the death of Julian Day was accidental or something more. We are awaiting test results from our lab which will help us make that determination.

Dr. Jonathan Crane is a psychologist who is also the super-criminal The Scarecrow. Fascinated by and obsessed with fear, he uses it against his patients and against Gotham at large through his custom fear toxin. When our story begins, Batman is unaware of Scarecrow's true identity, even as he is right under his nose. Ideally I would like for Scarecrow to have a different voice from Dr. Crane, with Scarecrow sounding similar to his Arkham Knight incarnation, but I am open to one standard voice or a different Scarecrow voice as well. Get yourself into the mind of character and do what feels right. Dr. Crane, while hiding his true identity, will also be using a fake name throughout the season.
Dr. Crane is in four episodes.

Matt Hagan was an actor. He was known as the man with a thousand faces. But eventually, for reasons unknown, his career was cut short. He largely disappeared from the public eye, only being seen a handful of times each year. To the majority, it was like he had just disappeared altogether, forgotten to time. Now it is time for his reemergence. But now, he is not Matt Hagan. He is the shapeshifting monster, Clayface.

Still no verdict in the trial of the Penguin. Though apprehended last month by Batman, the jury remains unconvinced of the felon's guilt despite overwhelming evidence.
In other news, there was a burglary last night in the Market Lane District. Thieves made off with rare antiquities and artifacts from the Newman Import & Export Company.
Mr. Wayne, Mr. Wayne! Do you have any idea why someone has been robbing and sabotaging your businesses?
A character that probably needs no introduction, but I'll give one anyway. Lois Lane is an intrepid reporter. She works for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. She is most famous for being the love interest of Clark Kent/Superman. So what is she doing in a Batman audio drama? In Batman: Gotham's Dark Detective, she is a friend of Bruce Wayne. Bruce uses her knowledge to help Batman with a case in episode one, and she later appears in episode three as a guest of Bruce to a Wayne Enterprises event. Think of this a bit like the DCAU World's Finest BTAS/STAS crossover. Lois appears in two episodes, one scene each.

Dick Grayson is the adopted son of Bruce Wayne. Bruce adopted him after his parents, known as The Flying Graysons due to their acrobatic circus act, were murdered by Tony Zucco. After many years of being Batman's sidekick Robin, Dick felt it was time to start out on his own. So he moved to Bludhaven and became the vigilante Nightwing. He remains on good terms with Bruce and offers an ear to listen to his troubles and a fist to aid in the battle against Gotham's criminal underworld whenever necessary.

You molded me and taught me, Bruce. For years, I lived under the shadow of The Batman. I wanted to get away, to be my own man. Yet, when I chose a costume and a name, they reflected you. You're a part of me, Bruce. I can't deny it. And I don't want to any longer. I just wanted you to know that. That, and one other thing -- I'm proud to have been Robin.
Mario Perlman is the vigilante Rumor. But unlike Batman, Rumor kills his targets. After a family member was murdered by the Ventriloquist, he suffered a psychotic break that caused him to abandon his existing life and become a vigilante bent on eliminating crime in Gotham at all costs. This puts him in contention with Batman and the GCPD, frequently landing him in jail. This character has only appeared one time in the 2004 The Batman. You can base your performance off of that, or do something completely different. The choice is yours. The character was actually never given a last name in that appearance so I gave him the name of his voice actor, Ron Perlman.
Mario/Rumor only appears in episode one.

All of the roles listed here are small. They may be nameless or they may have names. Creating a new role for each one (there are 22) would be a lot of work for a character that may only have one to three lines. Some are longer than that but not necessarily big. For example, there is a two-page short that features just two characters. One is Penguin and the other is Jack Drake (father of Tim Drake). I felt like it wasn't worth it to set up an individual role for just that one character in a short. So, if you are looking for just a small role, this is a great spot to find one. Whoever is not filled I will try to voice myself (which may not go well) or hopefully another VA in the cast will be willing to take on a line or two. Available roles are: Jack Drake (one short), Raven (eight lines), Thug (one line and some pain noises), Citizen on Gotham City One (one line), Man (seven lines across two episodes and some straining noises lifting a heavy object), Bank Guard (three lines), Arkham Employee (one line), Cafe Bystander (two lines), Bar Patron (one line), police dispatcher (one line), police officer (one line), Officer Tom Dougherty (five lines, one reused in a recording), Officer David Moldoff (five lines), 911 Operator One (four lines), 911 Operator 2 (two lines), 911 Operator 3 (six lines), Caller One (two lines), Caller 2 (one line), Caller 3 (six lines), Officer on Radio (one line, Batcomputer (one line), and Thief (ten lines). If you are interested in voicing any of these characters, audition with whatever voice you feel fits the character(s) you're looking at with a line you feel fits. Please specify the character you are auditioning for.
