An Inkling to the Offings [Original Murder-Mystery Audio Play]
Project Overview
Hello everyone! So a year ago I finished my first real original piece of literature, a 7 act murder-mystery play entitled, "An Inkling to the Offings." It still remains my favorite story that I have written and one day I would love to get it on the stage. For now though, I've decided to make a sort of "audiobook"
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:
1). This play does contain strong language. Not all of the characters swear, but keep in mind that most of them do. If you have a problem with swearing, this may not be for you (If you do have a problem with swearing and you still want to voice a character, feel free to ask which ones don't swear).
2). In order for this project to work, if you try out prepare to be dedicated. Main characters can have from 130 to 500+ lines.
3). Have fun!
Go for it ;)
Description of the story:
A detective is invited to a dinner party under mysterious pretenses, and the only explanation is that: "his skills may be needed." Once he arrives, everything seems to go smoothly until the sun goes down... in the morning, a body is discovered and it is up to the detective to find the murderer. However, the murderer could be anyone, and the murders have only just begun...

Thank you all for your amazing auditions! You made this part of the process easy, yet hard to choose from all of you really talented people. I wish I could've casted all of you. Thank you so much again!
This is the hardest role in terms of amount of lines. The narrator has to sometimes read a paragraph of information.
There's nothing in particular that I'm looking for in a narrator, but do keep in mind that the tone of the story is a serious one.
**NOTE ABOUT AUDITION:
If you wish, you don't have to record both lines, the second is optional.
Inside the main hall of the Hildington Manor, all of Hildington’s staff is standing in a well-formed line, shoulder to shoulder. Hildington is pacing back and forth, checking each of his staff members to make sure they look ship-shape and prepared for their tasks.
Holloway drives across a long bridge and up to the house and parks next to a large, stone fountain. Holloway gets out of his black car and takes in the sights. The Manor was quite large, with a lot of red-curtained windows. The door itself was almost just as impressive as the Manor. Engraved on the expensive wooden doors were the letters “B” and “H”. The doors were very large and had gold doorknobs, probably real gold. The Manor was a marble color and had stairs going up to the doors. There were also well-kept hedges around the place and lanterns for when it got dark. Holloway was quite impressed.
This is the second hardest role in terms of amount of lines. Nathan is the detective in the story.
For Holloway, I'm looking for a medium pitched voice (perhaps even a slightly lower medium pitched voice (if that makes sense)). If you're looking for possible inspiration, look no further than to Oscar Isaac and Jensen Ackles (his normal voice, not his Dean voice)
That’s what I’ve been wondering. I mean, all of you guys are famous and I’m just…well, a simple detective. I haven’t done anything that outstanding in my career. The invite just stated that my skills may be needed.
Alright, now I’m going to have to ask everyone to give me a detailed account on what you were doing last night and where, starting with you, Mr. Waltz.
Enough, Lacroix! I’ve had just about enough from you and I’m sure everyone else has too. Stop harassing these two! Just continue with your story.
This is probably the hardest role to act out because of how emotional Uva is.
Uva is the friction in the story, she's always rubbing people the wrong way. She's full of herself, flirty, rude, paranoid, and homophobic.
You know, I bet this murder isn’t the last one we’ll see. These people are psychotic!
But what if it’s poisoned?!
I just wanted a little entertainment, I was bored.
Bernard is a rich, soft-hearted person. He sees his staff as his family, since he doesn't really have any relatives. He's very secretive though...
Is this all worth it? All of the planning and everything set forth? Why did I ever strike this deal?!
I’ll only stop it if one of the staff gets hurt, that’s where I draw the line. It’s only three more people anyways... I won’t have to worry about my guilt anyways. I do feel bad for Holloway, but some sacrifices have to be made. Yes, sacrifices…if only I could tell him. Oh well. It’ll all be over soon…
Elizabeth is a more reserved person, she seems to like to look over conversations and watch people. She's a mystery writer.
I imagined her has having sort of a medium pitched voice, maybe even a little drawling.
So have you figured it out yet, Nathan?
Well, maybe if you didn’t act like a bitch, everyone would like you!
Armstrong is an assistant to one of the guests, Eric Waltz. He's shy and devoted to Eric, but he sees him as a father figure.
I imagined Armstrong having sort of a deeper voice, but not super deep. Also, his voice still has an air of youth.
Sorry. You sure do pack a lot.
Yes, I’d hate to get my hair wet.
Elmers is Hildington's butler and perhaps his most trusted staff member. Elmers is a kind and polite person, never wanting to be rude.
For Elmers, I was never really sure if I wanted him to either have a slight British accent, an actual British accent, or just an American accent. Try what you want ;) (Don't make him sound like Alfred though).
Good evening Mr. Holloway, Mr. Hildington has been expecting you.
Of course, I’ll send someone to take a look. Sorry for the incident. I’m certain that nothing else like that will happen for the rest of your stay. Would you like me to take your bags up to your rooms?
Alexa is Hildington's gardener. She's lucky enough to have found her true love, Juliet. She's shy and has a hard time standing up for herself, but still very kind.
But we shouldn’t just look out for her. Just because she’s the most suspect doesn’t mean that no one else could be guilty.
How could I forget? You, me, my two sisters, my mom and dad, and your mom all in one rental camper headed to the beach. We certainly had a lot of fun on that trip.
Juliet is Hildington's secretary. She's a loving person but is also willing to stand up for herself and others. She's more confident than her girlfriend, Alexa.
Don’t worry about that, everything will be fine. It’s all in the past. As long as Mr. Hildington’s alive, no more harm shall be done here, I promise. I’ll be there for you too.
We’re thinking about getting a house out in the country and living a peaceful life. As much as she loves gardening, it’s very tiring. My job is tiring too; I plan out all of Mr. Hildington’s events, as well as do his taxes, write letters, and so on.
Jacques is Hildington's French chef. He's a bit brash, perverted, and sort of the opposite of Elmers.
I imagined him having a deeper medium pitched voice
(I don't think Jacques has any lines in French, but if he does, I can walk you through it if you get cast).
Well, what the hell do you suggest doing? Letting someone run around with rat poison?
No one else is going to die? Of course they will! Harold, this place is becoming a powder keg, getting ready to blow. One spark and it’s all blown to bits.
Rosie is Hildington's maid. She's wise and kind, always looking out for the other staff.
In terms of her Chinese accent, in the script I said that she has a slight Chinese accent. If you want to go full blown though, feel free.
I tried to tell you, but NO. Why listen to Rosie? She doesn’t know anything. I’m the one who set them up together!
I know, but it all seems fishy to me. Look, we’ve all known each other for over 3 years now. I know for a fact that none of us would do anything like this. Nothing like this ever happened while we’ve been in service.
I was so worried about you! I heard the news about a series of murders going on at the Manor and I feared the worst. Then I remembered who my husband was and realized I had nothing to worry about.
Sure they were. I bet you use that same excuse on your mother when you forget to call.
I need two police officers, they're just extra parts.
What the hell happened here?
By the power vested in me from the State of Vermont, I declare you to be wife and wife. You may kiss the bride.
