Sonic Adventure 2 (ソニックアドベンチャー2 Sonikku Adobenchā Tsū?) is a platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega in 2001 for the Dreamcast, as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the sequel to Sonic Adventure and was developed to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the franchise, as well as the last Sonic title to be released on a Sega console. The game features two good-and-evil storylines, each featuring three playable characters with whom they share a gameplay style with their opposite counterpart. Sonic Adventure 2 additionally serves as the debut of Shadow the Hedgehog, a black hedgehog that vaguely looks like Sonic, and Rouge the Bat, an enigmatic treasure hunter.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic is arrested by the Guardian Units of Nations military organization due to being the supposed perpetrator of a Chaos Emerald theft. When the hedgehog learns that the true culprit is Shadow, whom he has been mistaken with, and that Eggman is up to no good again and plans to conquer the world using a planet-shattering weapon, he joins forces with his friends Tails, Knuckles and Amy to stop both evildoers and prove his innocence.
Like its predecessor, Sonic Adventure 2 was met with positive reviews, with praise for its gameplay variety, visuals, and music. It nevertheless received criticism for failing to address its prequel's flaws, most noticeably the camera orientations. Due to being released at the end of the Dreamcast's lifetime, it only sold around 500,000 copies. The game was re-released for the Nintendo GameCube less than a year later, under the name Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, with several tweaks to various aspects regarding graphics and gameplay features.

Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu?, born June 23[22][23][24]) is the titular main protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and Sega's mascot. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog born with the ability to run faster than the speed of sound, hence his name. As his species implies, Sonic can also roll up into a concussive ball, primarily to attack enemies.
Born on Christmas Island, Sonic abandoned his home at an early age to pursue danger and adventures.[22][25] Becoming a carefree adventurer, he has spent most of his life traveling around the world and far beyond, usually with his best friend, Tails, by his side.[26][27] He has used his abilities to defend his world and those far beyond from the forces of evil, especially his arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman, and his empire.

Shadow the Hedgehog (シャドウ・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Shadō za Hejjihoggu?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog/Black Arms hybrid who resembles Sonic the Hedgehog in many ways[8] and serves as his arch-rival and occasional ally. Shadow was created as the "Ultimate Life Form" (究極生命体 Kyūkyoku Seimeitai?) by Gerald Robotnik by using the DNA of Black Doom and is the final result of Project Shadow. His purpose was to provide ways to develop a cure for incurable deadly illnesses, more specifically for Gerald's granddaughter Maria Robotnik, who he had a great bond with. However, he was eventually captured following his creation and put into stasis by G.U.N. when he was deemed as a threat to humanity.

Doctor Ivo Robotnik[13][14] (ドクター・イヴォ・ロボトニック[15][9][16] Dokutā Ivo Robotonikku?), better known by the alias Doctor Eggman[17] (ドクター・エッグマン[18] Dokutā Egguman?), is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a human scientist who boasts a remarkable IQ of 300 and a passion for machines. Eggman dreams of conquering the world to establish a global empire to build his utopia, Eggmanland. For all his brilliance though, his plans are constantly foiled by his arch-nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his friends.

Miles Prower (マイルス・パウアー Mairusu Pauā?), better known as Tails (テイルス Teirusu?), is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a young anthropomorphic fox cub born on West Side Island who, due to a genetic abnormality, was born with two distinct twin-tails, hence his nickname. Due to his abnormality, Tails was a victim of bullying during his youth. One day, however, he met Sonic the Hedgehog and was inspired to be like him after seeing him run like the wind. Tails soon after began following Sonic on his adventures and has since become his best friend and sidekick. He is able to use his twin-tails to fly by rotating them like helicopter rotors and is a mechanic genius and aerial pilot.

There's no mistake about it, this must be the island. It's a secret military base that is reinforced and super strong! It's called Prison Island. I heard the news about it on satellite TV. I still can't believe that Sonic would destroy the military buildings or rob the bank! Wait for me, OK Sonic! I'm on my way! [Looks down and spots Amy being chased by Eggman] What? Hey, look it's Amy! And Eggman too! What's Amy doing here? Doesn't matter. I have to help Amy because she's in danger! Tornado... Transformation!
The Chaos Emeralds are like magnets...they have the power to attract each other. If I can use that to find where Eggman is.
For some reason, I'm not getting a signal from the six remaining Chaos Emeralds... Maybe Eggman took the Emeralds into outer space.
Rouge the Bat (ルージュ・ザ・バット Rūju za Batto?) is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is an anthropomorphic bat and jewel thief who has worked as a part-time government spy[11] for the President of the United Federation and in close association with the Guardian Units of Nations. A world-famous treasure hunter,[12] Rouge has a weakness for jewels, like the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds, which she always obsesses about. As a spy, Rouge is trained in combat, stealth and infiltration, and possesses both super-level kicking power and flight.

Knuckles the Echidna (ナックルズ・ザ・エキドゥナ Nakkuruzu za Ekiduna?) is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic echidna and the current guardian of the Master Emerald, a powerful ancient gemstone which is kept on Angel Island. Guarding it is his solemn duty to protect from anyone seeking to abuse it, as well as the sole surviving descendant of the echidna race from the Knuckles Clan.[8][10][11][12] Known for his powerful and wild nature,[8] his dominant traits are his super strength and the two spike-like knuckles on each of his gloves, from which his name is derived from, and which he can dig and climb walls with. He can also trap the wind under his dreadlocks to glide through the air. Knuckles is also one of Sonic the Hedgehog's oldest friends and rivals.

Amy Rose (エミー・ローズ Emī Rōzu?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with a crush on Sonic the Hedgehog. Since meeting Sonic on Little Planet, Amy has declared herself his girlfriend and has attempted to win his heart by any means in many of their adventures. She wields the Piko Piko Hammer, which she uses with skills second to none and never leaves home without.[

There has to be! I know that people fight over the most trivial things. Some people may be selfish, like the professor said... but they're basically good, if they try their best and never give up on their wishes. Professor Gerald Robotnik[4] (プロフェッサー・ジェラルド・ロボトニック[5] Professā Jerarudo Robotonikku?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He was a human scientist and the grandfather of Maria Robotnik and Dr. Eggman. A world-renowned scientist who is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest scientific minds of all time, Gerald was responsible for several groundbreaking creations, including his greatest achievement, Shadow the Hedgehog, making him a modern day scientific Da Vinci.[3]

Somehow, someway, I got scared as I no longer was able to control my thoughts. All I could think about, was that I wanted it all to end. Based on my original projections, I was able to complete my project; Shadow. I designed its mind to be perfect, pure... I will leave everything, to him. Maria Robotnik[3] (マリア・ロボトニック[5] Maria Robotonikku?) is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is a young human, the granddaughter of Gerald Robotnik and the cousin of Dr. Eggman. Born and raised on the Space Colony ARK, Maria suffered from a terminal illness that made her unable to leave the place of her birth and go down to earth. To save Maria, Gerald worked on Project Shadow in hopes of finding a cure for her. Gerald's research produced Shadow the Hedgehog, with whom Maria became close friends. When G.U.N. later shut down the ARK, Maria was killed by a GUN Soldier while trying to assist Shadow in his escape from the colony. Her passing had a big impact on Shadow's psyche and proved to be an event that would strongly influence the fate of the world in the decades that followed.
