Originally a mysterious background character that would stalk the unnamed Lantern Society Member from the shadows, Kaito's role becomes a lot more significant as the game progresses. As more and more members of the Lantern Society are killed off by a spirit from ancient Japanese mythology known as a Kerakera-onna that has been corrupted by the Skyfall event, Kaito eventually steps in, unable to bear the thought of Japan falling to these monstrosities. With his assistance, the Yokai is defeated and the remaining dangerous spirits eliminated. The fallout of the Skyfall event still radiates over Japan, with Kaito vowing to protect the archipelago from more spirits.
It's revealed in an easter egg that Kaito was originally a spirit affected by the Skyfall event in such a way that he would drown victims in monstrously sized rip tides.
Kaito should sound old and hardened, like a retired soldier that has spent many years of his life fighting for his country before finally deciding to settle down.
The Lantern Society saved me from damnation as an evil spirit. I am forever in their debt. Now they are almost extinct. Without them, nothing can stop the spirits.
