Joseph Bozlinski for James
Brave and experienced in battle, James is a man that doesn’t take himself too serious. He was a soldier for a long enough time to learn that the serious and hard life wasn’t meant for him. His face always has this grin that fools other men and steals the hearts of women. But though he looks like this harmless and happy man in the mid-thirties, he conceals a powerful and insatiable thirst for human blood. If he will put this thirst above his care for humanity or try his best to control it and enjoy eternal life, is up to the player.
Background:
After quitting the soldier life, James lived from the wild: hunting animals, selling furs and meat all over the Island. He was good in what he did and never worried too much about what would happen the next week. Most of his money was spent on drinking, gambling and women, he had a lot of friends and people would hardly turn their back on his smile. The problems began when travellers started to disappear in the wilds, animals were getting butchered and no one was able to tell what kind of new predator was the cause of it. Knowing that, James had two options: Stay safe inside the walls of the cities and lose his job as a hunter or venture himself through the wilds and slay whatever beast was causing harm to people and animals. He armed himself and chose to fight. Seeing that the nobles were too scared to sacrifice their soldiers on the beast and that his friends ran scared when he told them his plan, he saw no other option but to hunt this beast alone.
After a few days of searching for the cause of the panic, he found a corpse, mutilated and with green vines growing from its belly. He tried his best to keep control of his emotions and looked around, only to discover that what was causing harm to the travellers and killing the animals was no beast, but a supernatural entity. Some sort of Man-Tree that was lurking through the region and killing everything he was able to find and poisoning it, turning the victim into another thing made of trees. The fight to solve the mystery and make things normal again soon became a fight for his life. Beaten and weakened, he was saved by a group of heavily armed soldiers that not only saved his life, but also offered him a job as a member of the Inquisition. James was trained for a few weeks and helped the inquisitors to hunt some nests of these treeguys, establishing a perimeter that isolated the monsters, keeping them from attacking the villages nearby. Then the saviors gave James one last job, that he had to complete alone in order to be a true inquisitor: Get inside an old mausoleum and recover a golden statue that was said to hold great power.
Inside the mausoleum he saw some undead creatures that attacked him, something that he never thought possible before. He was at the edge of madness, almost giving up the job when suddenly, he found a door that led to a tunnel and at the end of this tunnel was a cave where he met the beautiful pale lady that would change his life forever.
The lady had the statue and James managed to get it from her, but even though he had this feeling about her being some kind of old and wicked creature, he showed mercy for the lady, and this was his doom: The inquisitors didn’t accept the naivety of this man that faulted to kill a vampire and taught him a lesson, beating him until the point that he almost died. Actually, he would have died if the beautiful pale lady didn’t find him, if she didn’t give him her powerful blood, that raised him as a vampire!
