After his birth, Mephiles was sealed inside the Scepter of Darkness by Shadow the Hedgehog (having traveled back in time via Dual Chaos Control), but was accidentally freed a decade later during a skirmish between Shadow, Rouge the Bat, and Doctor Eggman.
