Minor role for a Soviet government official, anthropomorphized as a red fox, in his early 30s. He's the youngest of the government members who get briefed on the space program's plans for the new, revolutionary Sputnik 2 mission. He's also the first one to question what the plans to bring the pilot back alive are, which is what forces the revelation that there aren't any. He isn't any happier about it than his peers are, and can only hope the ones in charge know what they're doing with such a risky plan.
