The Hauptmann is a veteran of the Great War appearing in two monologues. In the first, he is giving a joyous victory speech on the eve of the 1918 armistice, ceding victory in the Great War to Germany. In the second, he is giving a grim speech to his men in the trenches of World War II, reminiscing on how Germany managed to win the war, but lost the peace.

  • [Joyous] But in the end, every challenge we met, we overcame. The French army collapsed, the British retreated to their island, the Russian Empire crumbled. And Germany was victorious! [Crowd cheers] Let us drink to the Kaiser. Let us drink to Germany’s Place in the Sun!

  • [Grim, Determined] We will win this war, as we won the last war. A time of blood and iron, brothers. But the victory must not be as before. [Soldiers mumble in agreement] No longer must Germany dominate, control, contain. Without a new security order, a new European order of brothers, our nation cannot last. Let this war be the last war. Let the deaths of our brothers mean something today. Let us become the vanguard of that new, rising order.

  • [Melancholic] The truth was, yes, we had won the war, but we failed to see the ramifications of our actions. By diminishing France and Britain, we had created a much greater evil. Defeat broke the empires of our old enemies, but it did not break their will to fight. When France and Britain collapsed, their people turned to a new ideology.
